I was sickened by the first response from the local Labour MP warning that the "right wing" would try to exploit it. The only people trying to make political capital out of it were labour Ministers who wanted us to know how alert they all were on a Bank Holiday Monday. It was a distressing event but no weapons have been reported and mercifully nobody was killed.

No matter what the circumstances if the driver was brown/muslim the normal people would already have agitated, councillors wives would have commentated and there would already be riots. This thread would be 6 pages long.

that a suspect is white British. If they had said within minutes that Rudekabana was black British,
or given a description of the London acid attacker and others as brown non British, people
would not think there was an agenda at play. It's quite understandable that many do.

What gets me about the media argument is that the BBC simply tell the official state response to events, or forward a select X post, all the material they use is social media content

Within an hour you could see the event from 20 different angles, unedited, and the public response as it happened, all on social media
But all the BBC had was 1 edited clip, and then 12 hours later send sally to report from where it happened….after everyone had gone home.

The agitation comes from the authorities palpably trying to supress information when the suspect/perp has a 'protected' identity, and amplifying it if they are unprotected. Top of that unprotected list would be an older white British man. Unless the establishment has an investment in them, eg Mike Amesbury.

Therefore this case appears to follow exactly the same well trodden pattern that we are accustomed to.

As far as the length of the fred is concerned, it's pretty difficult to deduce the motivation from what is publicly known. The MO of driving into crowds deliberately is commonly islamist, where the motivation is known, ie hatred of the western way of life.

It’s perfectly evident that this case will, as with all others, come down to intent.

From what I’ve just heard of the charges being brought, they clearly show a distinction between two very different types of action, even the disingenuous WD could see this.

It's amusing to see the concerted effort to humanise him in the last couple of days. He's obviously got good lawyers, who have got good PR.


My big question is what's happened to the drug charge. Cos that, for me, would be the clincher. If this case were in America, I'd probably be backing him getting off due to him arguing he was scared for his life etc but think it'll be trickier here.

My first impression from the videos was that perhaps he panicked as fans were banging on his car and trying to open the door either in high spirits or being angry at a car in the street with people.

There was one video from a higher lever that showed him Veering onto the pavement towards pedestrians, which, could be viewed as deliberate or defended as a loss of control if the car in panic.

It does help that he is white and middle class in his defence as any judge will have more sympathy with him than working class football scum.

OBVIOUSLY it makes a difference if it was a fit of panic/rage, and a planned attack. There is a small amount of mitigation.

If it was planned you'd want to see him incarcerated for the remainder of his time on the planet. This doesn't appear to be the case here, but sever punishment is still in order, in my view.

Drunken Royal Marines have trashed their Angus base by firing military-grade flares through windows, it has been claimed.

The Royal Navy is carrying out an investigation into the late night incident at 45 Commando’s barracks at RM Condor, on the outskirts of Arbroath.

The highly-trained personnel are alleged to have set fire to their base, wrecking at least six rooms, with the blaze extinguished by fire crews.

The fire on Thursday evening, believed to be the second this month, caused thousands of pounds worth of damage.

A source told The Sun newspaper: “Top brass are furious.

“Having a few drinks is one thing, but this escalated very quickly. It got way out of control. It’s all being looked into now.”

Video footage taken at the scene showed a communal kitchen, lounge and other rooms blackened by smoke.

Light fittings were melted by the heat, while an entire corridor was taped off for repairs.

Insiders claimed marines fired pyrotechnics at windows from outside the barracks. The flares, dubbed Shamoolis, are used for illuminating night patrols.

It is understood military police have launched a probe into the blaze.


A Royal Navy spokesperson said: “We are aware of an incident at RM Condor which is under investigation.

“As the investigation is ongoing it would be inappropriate to comment on or speculate on this matter at this time.”

A spokesman for Tayside Fire and Rescue stated the service had not been called to deal with the incident.

Angus councillor David Fairweather, Independent member for Arbroath West and Letham, said the fact the incident happened on the base, rather than elsewhere, was “a blessing”.


He said: “I am sure the CO (Commanding Officer) will be absolutely furious and will condemn and punish those responsible.

“The Marines have got a very dangerous job, they do need to let off steam at times, but sometimes their behaviour does go over the score.

“This is part of service life, it’s not acceptable and I am quite sure the hierarchy will not condone it.

“They need to let off steam at times, but it should be in good spirit and not put anybody in danger.”


Thursday’s incident happened a few hours after a serving Sergeant with 45 Commando was fined £335 after he admitted assaulting two men at an Arbroath nightclub.

Forfar Sheriff Court heard Sergeant Richard Anderson of 45 Commando punched the pair at De Vito’s in the early hours of Boxing Day 2018.

Anderson, 37, based on Merseyside, is facing financial implications and a loss of promotion because of his actions.

Indeed, the report was headlined "every victim should get the justice they deserve - prosecutors vow to 79 injured". Unless you were born yesterday, you'll know that nobody is 'crucified' by the press nowadays, as sub judice has reached into arrest, never mind charge. I's not factually correct, reporting in meant to be free until charge, but in practice that's the way it works now.

The press can't 'crucify' anyone until the trial, where they can report on what the prosecution say, and the evidence presented. They can 'crucify' them once there has been a judgement.
