The company, which has not commented on the reports, charges guests $250,000 (£195,270) for a place on its 8-day expedition to see the wreck.

Sea buoys are chained to the sea floor
The ship on the surface knows exactly where the wreck is, and they must have created a chain strong enough to withstand the pressure

2.5 miles seems a bit much :

1440ft or 439 metres looks like longest chain :
.
https://www.quora.com/What-are-the-longest-and-heaviest-anchors-and-chains-used-by-the-ships-of-the-US-Navy

Firstly the Nimitz class has TWO anchors which are 30 tonnes EACH and are attached to 12 shots of chain (180 fathoms or 1,080 feet) or “shackles”. The steel links weigh 164 kilograms (360lbs) each which all up that adds roughly another 10+ tonnes when aboard.

When it comes to the length of the chain the Nimitz class is at 333 metres (1062ft) long. The longest chain however is now on the new class of aircraft carriers starting with the USS Gerald R. Ford. This new class has a chain length of 1440 ft or 439 metres.

Your hardly going to want to have a chain above you running for miles that you can't see when negotiating your way around a mssive shipwreck site.

I can’t find any reference to it online but it was real because I have a photo in one of my books on the history of steel manufacturing.
If I recall which book it was in I’ll post it.

Sheffield were the manufacturers of specialist equipment…there was nowhere that could create the things created in Sheffield, even mass carbon steel cities used to come to Sheffield for the equipment they needed to cut their own steel.
Armour plate, ship hulls, crankshafts, anchors etc they all came here for them.
Largest ingot ever created was in Sheffield too.

And here's the full statement from the company.

"We now believe that our CEO Stockton Rush, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, Hamish Harding, and Paul-Henri Nargeolet, have sadly been lost.

These men were true explorers who shared a distinct spirit of adventure, and a deep passion for exploring and protecting the world’s oceans. The entire OceanGate family is deeply grateful for the countless men and women from multiple organisations of the international community who expedited wide-ranging resources and have worked so very hard on this mission.

We appreciate their commitment to finding these five explorers, and their days and nights of tireless work in support of our crew and their families.

This is a very sad time for the entire explorer community, and for each of the family members of those lost at sea.

We respectfully ask that the privacy of these families be respected during this most painful time."

It is bad news. It points to the scenario experts had feared right from the outset - that the Titan had experienced a catastrophic failure of its pressure vessel and imploded.

The pressure at Titanic depth is immense - some 4,000 tons per square metre.

If there was any flaw in the construction of the vehicle, this force would have exploited it.

Search teams will continue to study the area where the debris was found, looking for further fragments.

For the moment, they will just be photographing items. But at some stage, robot subs will almost certainly be tasked with bringing some of the debris to the surface.

Oceansgate? More like Heavensgate ffs

Boeing was not a partner in the construction of the Titan, it said Wednesday, despite a 2021 news release from OceanGate listing the aerospace company as a “partner” that provided “design and engineering support.”

“Boeing was not a partner on the Titan and did not design or build it,” the company said in a statement, declining to comment further about OceanGate’s assertions.

OceanGate couldn’t provide more information about its relationship with Boeing, it told CNN.

Similarly, the University of Washington said it was not involved in the design, engineering or testing of the submersible despite OceanGate’s claims in a 2021 court filing.

This might give a clue to how they died, from a 1983 deep sea diving accident.

Medical investigations were carried out on the remains of the four divers. The most notable finding was the presence of large amounts of fat in large arteries and veins and in the cardiac chambers, as well as intravascular fat in organs, especially the liver. This fat was unlikely to be embolic, but must have precipitated from the blood in situ. The autopsy suggested that rapid bubble formation in the blood denatured the lipoprotein complexes, rendering the lipids insoluble. The blood of the three divers left intact inside the chambers likely boiled instantly, stopping their circulation. The fourth diver was dismembered and mutilated by the blast forcing him out through the partially blocked doorway and would have died instantly.

Coward, Lucas, and Bergersen were exposed to the effects of explosive decompression and died in the positions indicated by the diagram. Investigation by forensic pathologists determined that Hellevik, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient and in the process of moving to secure the inner door, was forced through the crescent-shaped opening measuring 60 centimetres (24 in) long created by the jammed interior trunk door. With the escaping air and pressure, it included bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in fragmentation of his body, followed by expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine, and of the thoracic spine. These were projected some distance, one section being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door.
