Ireland's excess mortality rate fourth-highest in EU

The data revealed there were 25.4 per cent more deaths in the Republic in December compared to the average number of deaths for the same month each year between 2016 and 2019. Photo: PA Images

A sharp increase in excess deaths in Ireland in December 2022 resulted in the highest excess mortality rate in the Republic since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic almost three years ago, according to new EU figures.

The latest data on the extra number of recorded deaths above historical averages shows the State had the fourth-highest rate of excess mortality among the 27 EU member states in December.

The data revealed there were 25.4 per cent more deaths in the Republic in December compared to the average number of deaths for the same month each year between 2016 and 2019.

It represented the highest monthly rate of excess mortality in the State since the start of the pandemic in April 2020 when it reached 38 per cent and also showed a sharp increase on November's figures when it was 15.5 per cent.

Can you fill in the gaps, some years before and those after? Wouldn't want someone cherry picking and jumping to wrong conclusions.

Cos I've just looked up 2018 and those are actually higher than the 2023 figs.

The latest data published by Eurostat (published 17 February 2023), refers to deaths in December 2022.  Eurostat estimates that the EU (25) experienced additional deaths of 19% above baseline. It is estimated that Ireland experienced 25.4% additional deaths.  Across Europe, the countries with the highest estimated additional deaths in December were Iceland (43.1%), Germany (37.3%) and Austria (27.4%).

His answer basically says there was a flu going round at the end of the year doesn't it.

Anyhoo, any chance of that extra data to quieten any accusations of cherry picking?

Part of it surely down to higher population,4.75m 2016,2023 5.1m both estimates but offers a partial explanation.

It is quite interesting that almost all of the developed worlds death rates began increasing around 2008-10. I don't know why.

Not me pulling anything. You posted the link. The written response basically boils down to excess deaths (esp respiratory iirc round weeks 49-52). If you wanna aim your tinfoil hat at someone, aim it at the guy who said it.
