A record 45,728 people crossed the English Channel to the UK on small boats in 2022, up more than 60% on the previous year as migrants continue to risk their lives making the dangerous journey.

The perils of the deep waters separating France and Britain were once again brought painfully into the spotlight over the last 12 months, when four people lost their lives after their boat capsized in freezing waters in December.

It was a year where the government continued to promise tough measures to stop the flow of boats and crack down on people smugglers, including pursuing its controversial Rwanda deportation scheme.

But data on the numbers of arrivals - compiled and analysed by Sky News - shows a different picture.

The figures, based on provisional data released daily and weekly by the government, show a sharp rise in the number of arrivals last year, a continuation of a years-long trend that shows no signs of stopping.

At least 45,728 people are believed to have crossed the Channel to the UK in small boats in 2022, an increase of more than 17,000 on the 28,526 who arrived in 2021.

Figures released by the government on New Year's Day were very similar, with the final number being confirmed as 45,756.

SNC  ,when all else fails, regurgitates the regretable number of mostly , young male economic migrants ,as an argument against Brexit.
When of course if you are able to think it thru ,it is the opposite.
True the hoards in dingies persist but they arrive  after great difficulty ,with few rights and dubious claims.
Previously, when in the EU ,legal young economic migrants waltzed in hourly at Stanstead etc, with full rights to health ,benefits ,housing ,schooling......from Bulgaria/lithuania/Romania (random pick from 27) ,unchecked ,unrecorded ,often unskilled ,risk free ,instant residency.....their numbers not in tens of thousands.....literally MILLIONS.
So full control has not been achieved but maybe shut the floodgates, certainly.

Why are people equating these non EU illegal immigrants with membership of the EU?

When we were in the EU there was the Dublin Regulation, people claiming asylum had to do in the first safe country they arrived in. We could legally return them to Greece, Italy, Spain.

When we left the EU Lord Frost didn't want anything to replace the Dublin Regulation hence today's mess. I'll amend my list.

Simply because the origin ,colour or religion of the male economic migrants is irrelevant to the majority of us ,we are just fed up with the sheer overwhelming numbers of basically uninvited "gatecrashers".
In the year ending March 2016 , 260,000 entered the UK from the EU legally ,not picked for their skills ,value to this country ,not selected at all ,previous years the numbers were even greater.
Your turn SNC show us the number the UK returned to the EU ,under these "Dublin reg's" for a laugh......I have seen them ,risible ,indeed less than we do now.

The people who came from the EU to work in the UK were largely welcome. They'd do low paid work while they improved their English then moved on to better paid work or go back to their own countries.

Obviously the racists were never going to welcome them.

This current influx has nothing whatsoever to do with the EU. This is about the UK government's failure to act on illegal immigration

Good immigration is great for the country ,Filipino nurses ,Indian doctors ,African engineers etc........targeted.controlled.managed.
The Eu open doors policy is not ,whether it be 50,000 unskilled young male economic migrant Romanians (legal) or 50,000 unskilled young male economic migrants Albanians (illegal).
The point that they only do the jobs the indigenous population do not want ,is simply not true ,take HGV drivers for instance.
Besides the driving test ,you need updates ,medicals and it was considered a career and a vocation in the UK and reasonably well paid and respected.
Soon with the tacho and the sat nav ,there was a demand for more drivers ,firms realised you could get cheaper EU drivers and quickly outed there UK drivers for the cheaper ,easily recruited plentiful EU counterparts ,wages remained static for decades ,standards dropped ,conditions worsened until it became a minimum wage occupation.
After the referendum and covid ,many EU drivers went home and we had a shortage...........now with "market forces" in play ,wages have nearly doubled and many many older drivers are returning to the roads ,with many young drivers with new test passes ,many women ,many PSV drivers upgrading ,many white van men progressing passing and training ,all UK residents ,all tax payers etc TF for Brexit

Way too hot in june/july Aug for me ,splendid in sept.
There are undoubted winners in the EU ,Greece/Italy/Spain are not.
High youth unemployment and its obvious long term consequences are horrific and with the UK in virtual full employment ,we are very lucky.
Every one of our school leavers and graduates will have great options ,now is the time to reduce benefits for people who are able to work and just choose not to.
