Is there such a thing as a NHS dentist in this country ? It seems they only do checkups
And try to ‘encourage’ patients onto a monthly payment plan
And charge or don’t do emergencies or even a brush and descale etc it’s a complete disgrace what is happening
Has the NHS dentist been privatised

Impossible to get an NHS dentist, I send an email periodically to 10+ local dentists & am on 'waiting lists' for a few of them
Most don't even reply or say they aren't taking on

I wonder if the dinghy boys have to wait for dental treatment?

I went private a few years back after realising that the cost differences were negligible these days.

Always just always have a tube of Oragel(£3.50) on standby, dental pain is brutal but this stuff goes a long way to ease it,not the solution but...

Dentists used to make fortunes from the NHS by putting fillings in teeth that didn't need attention.

I don't know how they make their money now, probably by driving everyone to go private I suppose. Then charging them an arm and a leg for routine work.
And from filling teeth that don't need attention of course.

Isn't our NHS wonderful?

It’s funny because I’m hearing more and more moaning about dentists refusing to see people

My dads filling dropped out Monday night and he went straight to a private one because he was being put on a waiting list up to 2 months

My grandad always pulled his own out but I don’t recommend that because it only takes one root to not come out clean and you end up in hospital with a chunk of gum missing (makes me shiver every time I think of that story but my grandad, yet he still pulled others out without the dentist ffs utter maniac)

Teeth are going to be a major problem going forward in this country if you ain’t got any money to go private

I’ve had loads of abscesses and raging toothache since from the age of 18 and like to think I’m accustomed to the pain nowadays, but I would wish an abscess on anyone, esp when the fooker sets the whole mouth off, your climbing the ceiling all night if it sets off at night.

I went to see one privately while I was on holiday last year, and was amazed at the quality of the service.

Unless it's a hospital style emergency, will never go to the dentist here again.

Dentists are a joke in this country so it’s no wonder my grandad downed half a bottle of brandy and pulled his own out

Last time I went they were still using numbing with a needle ffs

How much does a crown cost UK private?
Image result for typical private dentist fee for root filling and crown ftmant
Here is an approximate price guide to the different types of dental crown treatments in private clinics in the UK. A Zirconia crown is priced at approximately £600 to £800. An all-porcelain crown may cost anywhere between £400 to £1200.22 Sept 2020

How much does root canal cost UK private?
In general terms private root canal treatment costs as little as £480 for a single visit incisor root canal treatment and starts from f£650 for a single visit molar root canal treatment.

Under NHS - Root filling and crown fitment both fall under the Band 3 of charges. ie £282.

So claims that the difference between private and NHS dentistry costs is neglible, is nonsense.

For standard check-ups, fillings etc, the cost is negligible facts. As for the Root canal you state £282 under NHS, whereas my dentist is charging (from) £250, as follows (NHS in brackets):

Adult Examination (inc. x-rays and a general clean) £30 (£23.80)

Children's Examination (

Suffice to say that out of Root canal, fillings, check-ups, cleaning etc, there is little to choose between the too so yes I'll stick with my statement that the costs are negligible, in fact, fillings are cheaper than NHS, as is root canal and extractions are £12 more.

Actually, here's the breakdown (NHS in brackets)... Examination £30.00 (£23.80), Fillings £52.00 (£65.20), Extractions £80.00 (£65.20), Root Canal £250 (£282.80), Cleaning £55 (?)... This is pretty much all that most people require if they look after their teeth and the costs are negligible imo. Not sure how this is seen as "nonsense"

Bit of swings and roundabouts my NHS dentist charged me 23.80 for an emergency appointment to clean out and temp fill an infected incisor followed up with consultation with my regular dentist who decided it was suitable for root canal treatment, hour long appointment booked in for 2 weeks later for root canal work all in for £65.20 including x rays, nurse and a clean up while the anesthetic was kicking in, all done with great care not to cause any pain, an absolute bargain.

I recall having multiple fillings for the £65 charge in the past, I agree that its probably marginal value for a single simple filling on the NHS but equally I dont know if private dentists charge for each item, i.e do you get pinged for both a check-up and a filling charge  where I think the NHS dentist counts it as a single course of treatment.

I would hate to lose my NHS dentist

I'm not saying private is cheaper, but for routine work there is little to choose between them and sufficient for me to accept the additional costs. My main point, although this wasn't made clear, is that the NHS is no longer cheap and has got more expensive as the years have passed, which is why private practices are becoming more competitive and worthy of consideration if a NHS practice cannot be found.
