Madman backed into a corner.... I'm thinking it's more than likely.

Question is who would he chuck it at?

France is my best guess. Macron has been super mouthy all week.

Extremely unlikely he would try it and even less likely the order would be obeyed. Id think its a fair chance people are already working out who his successor will be.
Report SirNorbertClarke February 27, 2022 8:11 PM GMT
Wishful thinking. Putin is likely to have at least 3 layers of physical protection.
Report SontaranStratagem February 27, 2022 8:22 PM GMT
His best bet would be western Ukraine, the winds are heading this way for the next two weeks so it’d blow in Europe’s direction and not Russia

After 3 weeks it changes but it’d have died down by them

France is a member of Nato and has a pile of nukes, even he's not that stupid.
If he doesn't get his way in the Ukraine though, and gets bogged down (which I see as a possibility) and so as not to lose face, I wouldn't rule out him threatening or using them there? Small tactical one on a ukraine army strongpoint or something. Show them "who is boss".... Small probability but possible?
He's a headcase.
Report SirNorbertClarke February 27, 2022 10:51 PM GMT
It makes no difference if Putin is stupid or not. He's very clearly insane and as you say he is losing face big time.

I think if he's going to chuck a nuke then it'll be by Friday.

Odds on Putin chucking a nuke Europe's way?

Nil and I will give you 100/1 that it doesn't happen by the end of the year.

I think a more likely scenario if he gets stuck is he brings out the heavy artillery, the thermobarics, and starts levelling areas he wants to advance into. Maybe tell the civilians to get out first, to try to appear nice.

I was reading an estimate of the daily cost of this operation to Russia, and it's a lot, figure quoted was 15 billion a day. It certainly won't be cheap. If the Ukraineans manage to drag it out for weeks, I doubt Putin will accept a stalemate or worse a defeat. So I am worried about what he might do? There are "nukes" and there are "nukes".

Russians have 2000 small scale tactical nukes and my understanding is that while WE view them as a last ditch deterrent, THEY are much more likely to consider them a normal thing to use, if needed, in a "normal" war. The nutcase might think that would enhance his "hard bast&rd" image..

I suppose the big saving grace is that there are obviously a lot of ties Ukraine to Russia, I doubt nuking their cousins might lead to a bit of a drop in the poll ratings that mad dictators care so much about Plain.

If he DOES tactically nuke a French Fois Gras farm however, he might get away with it? LaughWinkDevil

Dotchnite: Not sure if you are being sarcastic but the point needs made ;)
Some people seem to think nuclear weapons are inherently all or nothing world ending doomsday devices that kill everything in a 50 mile radius and their only use is to level cities and once one goes off the world automatically ends.
They come in much smaller sizes, and the Russians believe they can be used tactically (i.e. small scale in a battlefield situation), which is why they have 2000 of the buggers.
I don't think a sane person would use them, but I trust Putin as far as I'd could throw him. And he does Judo, so that's not far!
Just ask yourself : If a month from now they've lost say 30-50,000 troops and are bogged down, and it's cost say $500 billion, and he's all these powerful weapons sitting gathering dust, and he's a mental case ..
I don't think he WILL but would you rule it out? A week ago the internet was full of people saying he'd not invade in the first place..
Report Just Checking February 28, 2022 12:06 AM GMT
*To clarify they have 2000 TACTICAL nuclear weapons, nothing to do with the strategic ones we normally think about.
Report Dotchinite February 28, 2022 12:10 AM GMT

From the BBC -

"Putin's in a tight spot," believes Moscow-based defence analyst Pavel Felgenhauer. "He doesn't have many options left, once the West freezes the assets of the Russian Central bank and Russia's financial system actually implodes. That will make the system unworkable.

"One option for him is to cut gas supplies to Europe, hoping that will make the Europeans climb down. Another option is to explode a nuclear weapon somewhere over the North Sea between Britain and Denmark and see what happens."

If Vladimir Putin did choose a nuclear option, would anyone in his close circle try to dissuade him? Or stop him?

"Russia's political elites are never with the people," says Nobel laureate Dmitry Muratov. "They always take the side of the ruler."

And in Vladimir Putin's Russia the ruler is all-powerful. This is a country with few checks and balances; it's the Kremlin that calls the shots.

"No one is ready to stand up to Putin," says Pavel Felgenhauer. "We're in a dangerous spot."

The war in Ukraine is Vladimir Putin's war. If the Kremlin leader achieves his military aims, Ukraine's future as a sovereign nation will be in doubt. If he is perceived to be failing and suffers heavy casualties, the fear is that could prompt the Kremlin to adopt more desperate measures.

Especially if "would never do" no longer applies.

With regards to the OP, I can't see it myself, but that could be living through the cold war where the 'threat' was always there until we kind of got used to it. Never say never though.
