If half russia's army was based in france belgium and norway, I'm pretty sure the telegraph editor would shi--ing his pants.

That seems rather ungrateful , perhaps if the Ukraines UK ambassador is not happy with our help he can run back and cosy up to Putin and Russia . That’s fine good luck
|

Hello Melv, where have you been?
I think that the Western politicians are pushing Putin into a corner where he will have to attack to save face whether he intended to or not and I don't like it one bit. |

oh another right wing pootin apologist - who'd have thunk it?

Nato membership is the issue here. The Russian buildup is defensive only at the moment imho and Ukraine dropping the NATO plans would solve the issue overnight imho
Its the EU and US who have completely disregarded the US "promise" to not move NATO 1 inch east. You could argue given its expansion since 1997, that Russia has been incredibly patient in the face of such wanton aggression from the West |

rofl pootin signed a treaty with ukraine that he has blatantly violated.

By:
as was mentioned in another thread pootin is scared of democracy on his doorstep, not tanks.

more accurately |

I think a buffer zone from NATO is an understandable desire for Russia, but surely less important in these days of unmechanised war. I thought we had seen an end to tank battles etc.
|

Our help? Johnson fan nying around as if he's a statesman and Truss getting herself ridiculed and embarassed in front of the whole world!
You have to laugh. |
|
By:
dave, what treaty?
|
|
By:
I don't think Putin could care less about so-called democracy. He knows that it produces - Trumps, Johnsons and lgbt bowlucks, none of which is any threat to him and Russia. He knows there isn't a snowball's chance in hell of it infecting/gaining a hold in Russia. This is about him putting Nato in its place, by whatever means he is forced into.

^^budapest memorandum
The Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine, in accordance with the principles of the Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, to respect the independence and sovereignty and the existing borders of Ukraine etc |

Nato is a defensive organisation. Wanting a buffer from a defensive organisation Why would that be comrade laddie |
|
By:
The memorandum included security assurances against threats or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.
Thats a memorandum not a treaty. Russia are not invading Ukraine. They are in a defensive position against the progression of NATO eastwards. A promise given by the Bush administration in the early 90s. |
|

I think technically that Berwick On Tweed is still at war with Russia. So we have a precedent to conscript lfc1971, send him in and thus get rid of the limp-wristed Eton boy for ever.

Russia are not invading Ukraine
They have already annexed chunks of it. |
|
By:
why do you think they did that dave?
|
|
By:
“Could be imminent”
So it’s gone invasion, to imminent, to “could be” imminent Oh and “48 hours” so we all know what means, it’ll be a week before we hear anything else and we’ll stilll be on “48 hours” and “possible” |

It is formally a memorandum Dave. It being on a website called treaties.un.org doesn't change that
https://web.archive.org/web/20140419030507/http://minsk.usembassy.gov/budapest_memorandum.html As above even the US do not view it as legally binding. Its as much a treaty as Bakers promise to not move NATO once inch further east |

Ukrainian President Zelensky has issued anew decree declaring February 16 — the day Russia might be planning an attack — the Day of Unity. He calls on Ukrainians to raise yellow-&-blue flags, sing the national anthem at 10am, among other patriotic actions.
This is what happens when you elect a comedian to power. |

or the neo-nazis fighting the "Russian backed separatists" in the Donbas
none of this ever gets mentioned |
|
By:
^^^^^^Ukraine view it as a treaty and Russia I don't believe have claimed it isn't binding or given a credible explanation why they aren't in breach.
