Fairytale of newyork

Folk mishear...

Got on a lucky one
Came in eighteen to one

As

Got on a lucky one
Came in at ten to one

That whack job laurence fox was trying to get
the song to no1 including the word faagott instead
of a more pc version available elsewhere.

The group the pouges went on twitter to rebuke him
and called him herrenvolk, which became quite a thing.

A bit like groundhog day, again...

Lawrence should have told the Pogues that they pinched the tune from
a 400 year old English madrigal
I heard it a few years ago  on classical radio and said to myself
Ah , that’s where they nicked the tune

Probably out of copyright, so they'll be OK.

I see this Laurence Fox is singing a song over on Fintan Dunne's site, he hasn't much chance of the Christmas number one with that effort TBH, He got the first-ever 0.0 score beyant on Pitchfork for his release but gave him 3.8 for his stubble.

I think threads like this highlite potential marks
to be lured to YouTube for fleecing.

It's not as if the lyrics are difficult to find, or
that Mr pogue had never been asked about it before.

Far more interesting is where the pouges got their name

Founded in 1982,as"Pogue Mahone" – the anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse"

And they remove a word from song lyrics,...

I believe the narrator of the song placed his bet in the US I so 18/1 or even 181/1 would be a possible parimutuel return.

The song was originally planned as a duet between Shane MacGowan and Pogues bassist Cait O’Riordan. However, O’Riordan married Costello and left the band in 1986, before the song was recorded.

Costello was replaced as producer by Steve Lillywhite, who asked his wife, Kirsty MacColl, to record test vocals to help the band hear how the duet could work. They were so astounded by her performance they had to keep it.

Funny old world, innit!

The lyrics mention: “The boys of the NYPD choir still singing ‘Galway Bay’.” The NYPD doesn’t actually have a choir, but it does have an Irish pipe band who are featured in the music video. They didn’t know ‘Galway Bay’, so they played
the ‘Mickey Mouse Club March’ instead, and the video was later slowed down to fit the beat.

Great song. We'll ever hear the original lyrics on tv ever again though.
Shane will be 63 on Christmas Day. Looks really ill.

I've got a feeling
This year's for me and you
So happy Christmas
I love you baby
I can see a better time
When all our dreams come true
'Tis a masterpiece, from "If I should fall from grace with God". Shane McGowan RIP.

I`m from Shane`s home town, he and his family were regulars in a restaurant my family owned. A few years ago, there was a similar thread to this one, so I got his sister to ask Shane himself; he said `it`s 18/1`, as in `Came in, eighteen to one`
