The United States presidential election of 19sixty marked the end of Dwight D. Eisenhower's two terms as President. Eisenhower's Vice President, Richard Nixon, who had transformed his office into a national political base, was the Republican candidate, whereas the Democrats nominated Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy.

The electoral vote was the closest in any presidential election since 1916. In the popular vote, Kennedy's margin of victory was among the closest ever in American history. The 1960 election also remains a source of debate among some historians as to whether vote theft in selected states aided Kennedy's victory

The Mercury Seven were the group of seven astronauts selected to fly spacecraft for Project Mercury. They are also referred to as the Original Seven and Astronaut Group 1. Their names were publicly announced by NASA on April 9, 19 fifty nine . These seven original American astronauts were Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, John Glenn, Gus Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard, and Deke Slayton. The Mercury Seven created a new profession in the United States, and established the image of the American astronaut for decades to come.

Have you seen the Discovery documentary "Coopers Treasure" ?

Turns out that Gordon Cooper was a bit of a rebel and spent his time in space taking photographs of "anamolies" in the ocean which he believed amounted to a treasure map leading to lost pirate gold Excited

The best film about those 7 astronauts as ‘ The Right Stuff’

Starts in the Mohave desert base and the first man that break the sound barrier , Chuck Yeager
( he also shot down 5 Germans in one day in WW2)

and it takes you through to the space race early sixties
In many ways Yeager was the star of the show in the film and real life

Many aviators believed that man was not meant to fly faster than the speed of sound theorising that the transonic drag would tear any aircraft apart Oct 14 1947 , Yeager climbed into the X1 ( with the help of a broom handle to close the cockpit , he fallen from his horse the day before and injured his arm ) Flew above Rogers dry lake Southern California
rose to 40,000 ft and broke the sound barrier

The H. J. Heinz Company is an American food processing company headquartered at One PPG Place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company was founded by Henry J. Heinz in 1869.

Since 1896, the company has used its "57 Varieties" slogan; it was inspired by a sign advertising 21 styles of shoes, and Henry Heinz chose the number fifty seven even though the company manufactured more than 60 products at the time.

Librarians in Wandsworth’s Putney Library were excited and surprised to see an unexpected delivery this month – a parcel from Greece containing an overdue library book.

Due back on 16 October 1964, (fifty six years overdue) , the novel ‘Previous Convictions’ by Cyril Connolly was returned with a handwritten note from a Mr Johnson from Athens, who wrote: “This book was in our church library. I’m not responsible for the fine!”

The Song of Hiawatha is an 18fifty five epic poem in trochaic tetrameter by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow which features Native American characters. The epic relates the fictional adventures of an Ojibwe warrior named Hiawatha and the tragedy of his love for Minnehaha, a Dakota woman. Events in the story are set in the Pictured Rocks area of Michigan on the south shore of Lake Superior. Longfellow's poem is based on oral traditions surrounding the figure of Manabozho, but it also contains his own innovations.

May 14th 17fifty four The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is founded.

The first open championship to be held
at St Andrews was the 13th renewal
in 1873. This was won by Tom kidd
with rounds of 91-88 to win by
one stroke, and take the winners purse
of £11.

High scoring is attributed to rain
in the run up to the event leaving
vast puddles. Relief from puddles
came at cost of one stroke, with no
free drop for casual water back then.

On January 15, 2009, US Airways Flight 1549, an Airbus A320 on a flight from New York City's LaGuardia Airport to Charlotte, North Carolina, struck a flock of birds shortly after take-off, losing all engine power. Unable to reach any airport for an emergency landing, pilots Chesley Sullenberger and Jeffrey Skiles glided the plane to a ditching in the Hudson River off Midtown Manhattan. All 155 people on board were rescued by nearby boats, with few serious injuries.
