for the first time ever children whose first language is not English have out performed their native English counterparts in GCSE results
Black African pupils on free school meals were more than twice as a likely to gain a grade 9-5 in English and Maths GCSE than white British pupils on FSM. 34.7% v 16.9%. Chinese speakers did even better.
regional funding issues? cultural issues in certain communities tending to under value education - not helping their own children enough? You do often see a certain confusion on these forums about "which subjects are of value" (people often don't think beyond vocational value). is it a sampling problem - ie if they already learned English as a second language then by definition they are a bright subset?
On FSM = free school meals, which narrows down the field somewhat.
The reason already put forward that pupils bright enough to learn a second language are likely to do better is a good one. Yes I agree with that.

learning a second language (if you live in the country) is a dubious indicator of intelligence FWIW - immersion just makes it happen. Exam results also dubious as intelligence tests - they actually test effort.
These results likely a combo of cultural factors and funding.

In addition to English I speak a European language fluently having lived there 5 years - not because I'm clever (although I am also clever).
I have passed lots of exams because I made the effort - not because I'm clever (although I am also clever).
See how it works?
These results are worrying IMO. What's wrong with the natives?

It is because we are paying the price of our own success . British people ( and indeed Europeans ) are becoming less intelligent . We were the most intelligent for a long time .Clever people used to have more children , now they have less . This change started about 100 years ago , we are not as clever as the Victorians In the past clever people's children would naturally , because life was quite ruthless fall down the social scale spreading clever genes to the main population That no longer happens in the same way , it is the less clever who are reproducing , and the clever children are fewer and do not reproduce to spread their genes into the different levels of society So yes the British , and Europeans are becoming less clever

also Britain was the world's first industrial nation which meant that people moved from small towns and villages into large cities they no longer married someone from the same village This meant healthier genes , not only making them more intelligent but also more sane So that was good thing .

But ultimately because of the successful nature of our society there are more stupid people than clever ones , and it's possible than within a further 100 years there may be no clever people left Well we can already see the evidence for this
