Seems to have grown a little cold on the project:

The European Union is beyond reform and staying in is a risk to the UK’s security, former foreign secretary David Owen has said.

The peer said a Brexit vote in the June referendum could be the “spark we need to re-energise our nation”.

In an article for the Sun, Lord Owen said the vision of the European common market in the 1960s had been a good one but sovereignty has since been eroded, the euro is flawed, and the EU bound by “structural inertia” that “resists change, particularly any treaty change”.

“In my view the advantage of David Cameron’s negotiation is that it has shown up why it is now too late to reform the EU from within in any significant way,” Owen said.

“There are many positive aspects to leaving the EU. We will make our own laws again in our own parliament. We will rediscover the skills of blue-water diplomacy and rise to the challenge of global markets. It could be the spark we need to re-energise our nation: a challenge and an opportunity.”

He added: “To remain in the EU is in my judgment a more dangerous option for British security in its deepest sense – economic, political, military and social.

“Restoring a greater measure of self-government and full control over who comes in to this country are significant gains, and the UK would once again be doing things its way and accepting that when the electoral pendulum shifts inside our country real changes can be made that make a difference to people’s lives and aspirations.”

never much liked the man but will be voting out.

what the feck is 'blue water diplomacy'?

'when the electoral pendulum shifts inside our country real changes can be made that make a difference to people’s lives and aspirations.'  poppycock.

imo we're fooked no matter who's in charge. multinational companies and the people behind them have more power than any elected politican. will the tories still sign up to ttip? yes so there goes more sovereignty.

The good doctor now acknowledging that he was conned in the seventies.

If he got conned how do you think the ordinary electorate.

Nigel Farage proved right yet again.

I suspect Blue Water Diplomacy is a riff on the idea that we should get back to building trading links with the world as a sovereign nation with more natural ties to many of the countries which we could be doing far more trade with.

The Out side need some Left wing figures.
George Galloway a start,I'd like to see some working class British politician take centre stage, preferably from the North of England

If there was a true working class politician he would speak n behalf of those affected.

The ones who's jobs are being taken
The ones who's hospital beds are being snaffled.
The ones who's school places are being harpooned
The ones who's houses are being requisitioned.

Its the plutocrats and big business that wants ye to remain.

the trouble is for us more trade always means more imports of sh*t that we dont really need. shrink the banking sector and grow manufacturing based on innovation and technology (i know its a lot easier said than done).

for me the out side should put kate hoey at the centre of the debate. the mp who put the expenses scandal on the map and someone who doesnt just follow the party line.

Wildman why the support for Galloway ? Big supporter of Islam - anti western - slags off Britain all the time.

Might close the borders with Europe - would open them wide to Pakistan and Bangladesh etc.

I think Galloway is principled,I think he is a great orator,he is right on this occasion about sovereignty.

I'm not voting George Galloway into government,I'm just using his support to get Britain out of the Evil Empire.

Absolutely.
It's the endless supply of cheap ready trained labour they want. Plus the downwards pressure this puts on wages.

The people and the country can go to hell as long as they can get their own way.

That is of course assuming that dave did a better job negotiating than anybody who has any business experience.
Anyway inclined to agree with his Lordship, what we supported and envisaged in the past is not what is happening now.#

Doc Crippen is right
