It's going to be the Republic candidate v Le Pen in the Presidential elections. Le Pen has to be favourite at this moment considering it's inconceivable that there's going to be no Jihadi attacks between now and the election.

I hope you're wrong CJ but I suspect it would help them in their quest within Europe if FN were to win. Which is deeply worrying in relatio to the likelihood of further attacks and problems.

I also hope I'm wrong on my last comment. I can't see it though, when those who perpetrate such crimes get celebrity status amongst their peers and a free pass for their cause from the Government.

My bent is really from a political point of view, Hollande seems to have given up on the unfavourable seats in order to try and hold the UK equivalent of Bootle and Washington. I suspect the French socialists are heading for a situation that UK Labour finds itself in, unelectable in certain areas and fighting off an insurgent party in its heartlands.

The situation seems to be mirroring itself in Holland where an election should be due in the next 12 months, the socialists are close to being wiped out according to the polls. PVV(Wilders) has consistently high poll leads over there.

What a terrible choice the French voters had. The obnoxious Hollande, almost as obnoxious Sarkozy, and the even more obnoxious Front National. Their economy desperately needs a middle of the road free market party to confront the suffocating power of Unions and with a belief in a balanced budget before they bring the whole of the Euro zone down. Why anyone would want to join an organization (the EU) which seems to be run by the French is hard to understand.

There can be no hiding that the results of the elections are a big personal blow to Marine Le Pen.
She has lost the chance to govern a region and show the world that her party is serious. She has been reminded that however strongly the FN performs, the gates of power remain tightly closed. (and no its not copyrighted)

On the contrary being able to govern a region yet not be able to deal with the immigrant problem would probably have damaged her a great deal.

The way the system works we always knew what the result would be once the left pulled out in the regions FN won in the first round.

More interesting is the Sofie Montel result in Bourgogne-Franche-Comte and Philippe Loiseau in Centre-Val De Loire. Both results show a three way split with a couple of percentage points each way.

We have about 15 months left before the Presidential elections and unless Hollande does something pretty sharpish that will be a run-off between the LR candidate and Le Pen. We'll have the same result as these elections and LR candidate will win further feeding into the outsiders tag.

We are going to get to a point before 2020 where FN are going to get 50% on the first ballot.
