The verdict on the Dyson case yesterday is yet another example of the EU acting like a handicapper in racing. If a British company is doing better than the French or German ones, dream up a regulation to ban or damage the competitiveness of their products. It is called protectionism and is the main function of the EU apart from providing high paid jobs for the offspring of the european political class.

Is this the same Dyson company that milks as many grants as it can from the UK then moves the vast majority of it's work (washing machines/vacuum cleaners etc) to Malaysia at the first opportunity?

Dyson held off a long while,perhaps we should be blaming the politicians for not protecting british jobs ?

Doesn't change my point that the EU will never allow free competition with British companies whether we are in or out of the EU. They also exclude many products from places like Brazil which would be half the price if they were allowed to come into the EU.

Fair comment meadow but they still have R&D in Sheffield and have created skilled jobs for people in UK,I have far more time for engineers than politicians.

Just remember treetop, the money that they received from our government was your money and mine. Dyson used that money to create the illusion of permanently employing British workers in order to refine their manufacturing processes.  Once those processes were developed and honed by skilled British workers (and they had received the maximum grants available) they jumped ship to the far East, dumping those skilled workers on the dole.

If the EU were "punishing" Dyson for manufacturing outside the EU, they might have a point but they are just protecting inefficient EU manufacturers from competition which will always fail in the long run. If Luddites ruled the world, we would all still be riding horses.

I have yet to be convinced that anyone in UK has benefitted from the EU apart from those who work for the commission or are paid to interpret the laws that it passes. The rest of the EU has benefitted hugely from the money we have put in but that is another story.

lfc quite a lot of people who don't consider themselves British will be voting in the referendum. You cant tell people what nationality they consider themselves. Its one of the affects of once being a colonial power.

You should respect peoples differences on what nationality they consider themselves lfc provided they respect the laws of Btitain. They have a right however to have differences on certain things such as monarchy and other things if their beliefs are not harmful to those who hold different views on some things.

I never knew that lfc but come to think of it you are probably right. Are you comparing the British empire with the mongol empire? If so I think I have you in a corner.

In fairness I think a better comparable would be the British empire and other colonial empires around the same period in history.  If Ireland had the opportunity I imagine it would have tried its hand at creating an empire too so you have to see things from that time in history.

The same way you should see things from the other side of the coin when other countries were subject to being part of a colonial past. They cant just create a new country from day one after the yoke of its colonialism has been smashed. They need a wee bit of time to get back on their feet.

You should know from your time in Belfast lfc that its one of those ironies that one of the symbols of Britishness (the black taxis) is a landmark on the Falls Road so some things are admired about Britain in even the staunchest republican part of the north of Ireland. The fact you can fit 8 people into a black taxi may have something to do with it though.

Driving a black taxi at night in Belfast was probably the most dangerous line of work in the whole of Britain at one time. Just a passing fact for those taxi drivers who thought a bad night was when somebody did a runner without paying!

Some people are confusing the EU referendum with a referendum on some of our immigration policy, a referendum on whether Farage is a top bloke, even a referendum on free trade. It's none of these.

It's simply a referendum on whether the UK should be a member of the EU. Nothing else at this stage.

If we stay in, we're saying it's a good idea for us to have an 8% say in who decides our farm policy, much of our immigration, how big charities are funded ( yes, the EU is big in this ), and our trade policy.
If we get out, we're saying it's a good idea for the UK to decide policy on all this. That's it.

In any event the first thing that will happen on leaving is we'll want some economic and trade stability, so the PM will ask for a free trade deal with the EU-27, the EU will say yes but you have to allow free movement, and we'll say 'deal'. Switzerland and Norway here we come.

From the comments of the group leaders in the chamber it was not difficult to ascertain that in two weeks time Mr. Cameron can get very little more. In fact a close examination of the debate made me wonder whether even this deal would be ratified.
Why do I say this? Well, a paper issued to me as Co-Chairman of one of the seven parliamentary groups makes it clear that the European Parliament believes that social benefits and free movement will be changed for the British using an ordinary legislative procedure.
In English that means that it will need the approval of a majority of 751 MEPs.
The first to spot this was the eagle-eyes William The Earl of Dartmouth, a long-serving UKIP MEP from the South West.
William asked a question of Rebecca Harms leader of the Greens in the Parliament. He asked whether her group would support the proposed British deal. The answer was pretty clear: no.
So the implications are that Mr. Cameron could win a referendum on the terms of this deal for it then to subsequently be struck down

WARNING:  It is crucial that we go the polling stations armed with their mobile cameras to film anything that looks even remotely suspicious.  Such as:


1.  People carrying large numbers of postal votes

2.  Boxes of late ballots

3.  Ballots with uniform handwriting

4.  Burying piles of ballots under a newspaper etc.


All of the above occurred in May 2015 and similar was reported in Oldham a few months ago.  The establishment have a LOT to lose on this and if it gets close they will be tempted to revert to  norm.

Lets have a discussion on what your negotiating position would be with the EU over brexit.

Mine would be: We are leaving, here is Article 50 or whatever it is called. I would then contact each Government directly asking "If you want to continue trading with the UK tell us the terms you will offer" If the Commission tries to intervene I would tell Juncker that we no longer recognize his authority to be involved. That would soon expose their hand.
