He was never going to win this vote. Dragging a load of overpaid civil servants back from a long holiday to do some work is never going to be a popular management tactic.
More interesting is the future of the relationship between (generally accepted) idealogical allies of the Democrats and Labour?

I think his preparation and detail of the case he was putting forward and the speed he was trying to go at was his undoing on this occasion. I can't stick Miliband but imo was right in the stance he was taking. Nobody trusts the so called intelligence agencies anymore without 100% proof of who did what and to not get more allies on side before going to parliament was a schoolboy error. Should have got the report back from the inspectors ( usa are now saying evidence is not a slam dunk case ) studied it and gain international co-operation if 100% proof was obtained. The vote was the right decision at this juncture.

Politically inept - misjudged the mood of his own party, let alone the vast majority of the electorate.
Most Brits want the problems of their own country sorted out as a priority. They do not share the vanities of those politicians who still behave as if we are a colonial world power.

At this juncture being the operative phrase. More care needed in presenting the argument, proof and support. There was none and I'm a Tory. It was slipshod and not his finest bit of leadership. With a bit more of a solid case made and backed up with concrete evidence and the support garnered from other Allies he would have been successful. He made a big mistake last night and the innocent people of Syria are going to pay for it.

The right result will be a diplomatic solution achieved by China, Russia and Iran.
Without a ceasfeire the killing will continue with or without chemical weapons.
Only these 3 countries have the influence to bring about a ceasefire and therefore the world needs to make them responsible.
Cameron's idea to strike miltary targets was daft (hit a chemical weapons factory and what happens to the chemicals....????)
At least the wheels of democracy turned and our PM was defeated. I think that has to be a good example of our political system.
