I think this coalition is now very near to going kaput, the reasons being a large percentage of Lib Dem input has either been scrapped or kicked into the long grass, budget input, gay marriage ,now wind power is being scaled right down

Report ROCKIN HORSE June 3, 2012 9:33 AM BST
The Observer has learned that George Osborne is demanding cuts of 25% in subsidies, a reduction the industry says would "kill dead" the development of wind power sites. The Treasury's stance has put the chancellor at loggerheads with the Liberal Democrat energy secretary Ed Davey, whose party strongly supports more renewable energy.

The Tories didn’t win the last election because they didn’t put enough clear water between themselves and New Labour.
There’s a political cycle as well as an economic cycle.
The Tories were ready to get elected, but Cameron had broken the political cycle by moving to the left and taking the choice out of politics.

Clegg is destroying the Lib/Dem party. and Cameron is doing the same to the Tory party.

The simple message to the Lib Dems from labour should be simple-

"you made your bed (in Huhne's case several) now lie in it"....

IF - genuine Liberal Democrats like Hughes and Cable want a deal LET THEM DEFECT TO LABOUR...

Otherwise NO DEALS......

The Lib Dems under Clegg are a TOXIC BRAND ...why would resurgent Labour want anything to do with them??...

Currently down the drain, Gideon has reduced tax for his chums and is now sitting back doing nothing but blaming the Euro.
Dave will face reality eventually.
1 Replace Osborne with Hague;
2.and announce investment in the infrastructure,
even eventually perhaps
3. and a Government Investment Bank for businesses.

Satisfying as this would be, I don't think the Labour Party benefits from talking to the LD's. They are pure political poison.

At the next election it is not enough for Labour to win. What is more important is that the LD's are completely destroyed as a political force. They need to be completely isolated and ignored as the impotent irrelevance they actually are. The rest will come naturally.

For too long the LD's have been splitting the vote of the Left and sapping its resources, creating disunity. Without them there is little prospect of the Tories winning any future elections. Labour needs to take this opportunity to crush them completely. Parlaying with them will damage Labour and give the LD's the appearance of being an actual political force, something they haven't been for two years.
Report Avro Anson June 5, 2012 5:31 PM BST
Completely disagree Cheese. The Lib Dems are not perfect but they`ve done the best they can with the hand they were given. If you hate the Tories so much then you should be thanking the Lib Dems for watering down their government.

As for Labour, what a short memory you have. This was the party that ignored public opinion over Iraq leading to the deaths of thousands of innocent people. It lead to the death of an honourable WMD expert who was hounded by New Labour bullies. Then we had Gordon "Desperately In Need Of Anger Management" Brown borrowing more money, not to help the country but to help his own desperate election campaign. Now in opposition they continue to lie, twist and spin as bad as ever.

It is Labour who are pure political poison.

Tories would have stayed out of the war in Iraq Laugh

Tories would have had us in tip top shape in the aftermath of the financial crisisLaugh

Report Avro Anson June 5, 2012 6:35 PM BST
I never made either of those statements.

The fact is that it was a Labour government that got involved in Iraq. Despite people saying that Clegg is Cameron`s poodle, the biggest poodle was Blair to Bush. People have short memories.

The Tories could have made more of a mess in the aftermath of the financial crisis, we`ll never know. But the fact is that Brown`s Labour continued to increase public spending in a desperate attempt to win the 2010 election. This has given the coaltion the unenviable task of trying to put things right.

Remember what Mervyn King said, whoever wins 2010 election will be so unpopular with the cuts they will have to make that they will be out of power for a generation. Chances are he is right!

The fact is that it was a Labour government that got involved in Iraq.

Yes, and many Labour supporters were very unhappy about it. Some (like me)
actually voted LD in 2005 on that basis.

However, Labour now have a leader who clearly believes the war was wrong
and said so.

The LD's may have opposed Iraq in opposition but in government they rolled
over when an identical situation presented itself in Libya, there's no
reason to believe their opposition to Iraq was anything other than opportunistic.
Report cheese June 5, 2012 11:23 PM BST
Despite people saying that Clegg is Cameron`s poodle, the biggest poodle was Blair to Bush.

Whatever else may be wrong with Blair, and there is a lot wrong with him, that description is
inaccurate. On the one occassion Blair had a conflict with Bush (over the steel tariff), Blair
trounced the Americans in a matter of days. He made much of the early running on the Iraq war and
scored a significant propaganda victory over old europe by lining up a coalition of emerging
eastern european countries, making the franco-german axis look old and out of touch.

Blair knowingly went along with Bush for his own reasons. Whatever happened he is equally culpable
for.

"However, Labour now have a leader who clearly believes the war was wrong

That's okay then if he says it and Harman claps like a seal.  I wonder how he would have voted if he had been an MP at the time?

"Mr E. Miliband has a proud 0% voting record on the issue of ‘Iraq Investigation – Necessary’. There were 10 separate votes in the House of Commons in the period in which he has been an MP: in not a single one of these did Mr E. Miliband take the opportunity to make clear, or even hint at, what he now so sincerely believes: that the Iraq war was wrong. "

Report Avro Anson June 6, 2012 10:14 AM BST
I believe Ed Miliband when he says that the war in Iraq was wrong. But notice how awkward Labour MPs become when the subject is brought up. They all think it is wrong but they cannot bring themselves to condemn their comrades before them as loyalty to the party always counts for more than loyalty to the people.

As for Blair, the key issue is simply there was no need to go to war with Iraq. It had nothing to do with Al Qaeda or 9/11. This was simply an excuse by the Republicans to settle a score with Saddam Hussein. No need for Britain to get involved yet we did. I will never know why.

As for Libya, a completely different situation to Iraq.
Report treetop June 6, 2012 12:35 PM BST
But the fact is that Brown`s Labour continued to increase public spending in a desperate attempt to win the 2010 election.

Loyalty to the party, and himself, was demonstrated abundantly before the last election. Anyone forgetting this type of behaviour doesn't deserve the vote if they contemplate voting for more of the same. Brown should be impeached for disregarding the national finances in favour of his own advantage at that time. The Labour MP's who willingly encouraged him and supported him in the hope of looking after their own seats, at the expense of the taxpayers, are just as bad.

WW - even by your standards the airbrushing the yanks out of the two Iraq wars if good going.

"IF MAJOR HAD FINISHED THE JOB IN 1991..." - The American led coalition had finished they had permission for. I suspect Bush would not have been too upset if Iraq had not run away from Kuwait & the US could have stayed longer.

"TOOK TONY BLAIR TO HAVE THE GUTS TO FINISH THE JOB..." does Bush get a mention or was it Saint Tony who was in charge & GW was his poodle?

I've never heard anybody before today when talking about Iraq say - "BLAIR GOT IT 100% right!".
Report Avro Anson June 6, 2012 5:55 PM BST
I have never suggested that the Tories were against the war in Iraq. Only pointed out that it was Labour in government and they made the decision to support the US in this illegal war.

The worst thing about the war in Iraq apart from the needless deaths, was the yarn from both Bush and Blair that this was part of the war on terror. Well Al Qaeda were responsible for 9/11, they were the terror who the Americans were after. Yet by toppling Saddam they created a new breeding ground for Al Qaeda. Total madness.

The Bush Administration clearly had another agenda and Blair was the useful idiot who went along with it.
Report V4 Vendetta June 6, 2012 6:25 PM BST
More people would have been against it if Blair hadn't lied and told them it was all a fabrication though.  And Dr Kelly would still be alive too.
Report Mister E June 6, 2012 6:42 PM BST
Many had learned by then not to trust blair.

Millions marched in protest;
plenty of Labour back benchers and Lib Dem MPs opposed the invasion;
they were outvoted by the Blairite New Labour loyal to their boss to keep their jobs, and gung ho Tory MPs. Without Tory support Blair wuld have been outvoted and forced to resign.
The most impassioned plea for invasion (apart from the slippery Blair) came from William Hague.

With Iraq and Tuition fees Labour voted in sufficient numbers to sink Blair; the Tories kept him afloat.
Report treetop June 6, 2012 11:28 PM BST
The Tories fell for the patriotic line (IDS was ex army) and were daft enough to believe all the inside info the Labour spin machine were dishing out at the time. We only went to afghanistan to free up US troops to invade Iraq, an almighty mistake that has been. We have yet to see Blair under a forensic examination of his motives and that should be in the Hague.
Report V4 Vendetta June 7, 2012 9:46 PM BST
