Tories humbled and humiliated and losing around 700 seats

Liberals losing a further 150 seats from a catastrophic 2011 showing

Britain's biggest Authority (Birmingham) turns RED!

Cameron's FLAGSHIP Mayoral idea SUNK in City after City!

Labour at/around 1997 Polling levels at 40%; the Tories falling to around 30%; the Liberals polling lower than usual in local elections where historically they do far netter at 15%.....UKIP and RESPECT coming up

WARSI COMMITING POLITICAL SUICIDE by likening UKIP to the BNP (something she and the Tories will LONG LIVE TO REGRET!)...

The only minor glimmer for the Tories is Boris - a man who is so alienated from Cameron that he has not been seen with a Tory Rossette nor included the word "Conservative" in the majority of his campaigning....

The London Assembly looks likely to SWING TO LABOUR.....the maverick "who do you hate the least poll between Boris and Ken will be irrelevant to Cameron who has been told in no uncertain terms he is not wanted...

TORIES TURNING OB CAMERON AND THE LIBDEMS

LIBDEMS TURNING ON THE TORIES AND CAMERON

LABOUR making genuinely GOOD progress but with an air of humility and common sense from their brilliant Leader...

AND.....in just over 60 hours....

VICTORY FOR HOLLANDE....

AUSTERITY DOESN'T WORK
CORRUPT GOVERNMENT DOESN'T WORD
THE TORIES AREN'T TRUSTED....

Happy happy days!

Iain Duncan Smith and William Hague did even better at the local elections, one didn't even make the general and the other won one seat.  If Boris wins later in the day, this won't even be the biggest political story of the day and will be forgotten completely by tomorrow.  Meaningless.

The Budget was shambolic WW. Got what they deserved. In touch with the Square Mile but out of touch with the rest of the UK.

They couldn't win a majority when Brown was PM and on the back of Iraq;

all of the promises

I quite agree.  Cameron has been useless.  But I don't think Labour winning a bunch of meaningless council seats on a 25% turnout is much to shout about frankly.  The only people out voting are the ones hacked off so what do you expect?
Report ClayDavis May 4, 2012 10:07 AM BST
32% turnout...Java your right and wrong. Yes these are protest votes and in that terms quite meaningless. But they do give a guide. Miliband did well but has a long way to go.
Clegg had a bad night.
If Boris wins but the Tories are smashed in London then it has been a disaster for Cameron. A disaster to such an extent that he may not survive

java

One would have expected a little humility on what has been a very poor night for the tories and lib dems but NO...tribal as always!

A turnout around 33-35% is NORMAL for a mid term Council Election....that still equates to MILLIONS OF REAL VOTES...

The Opinion Polls putting Labour around 8-10% points AHEAD have been THOROUGHLY VINDICATED....

References to Hague and IDS are ACTUALLY WRONG.... there is NO Iraq/Afghanistan factor at play here and neither actually enjoyed the kinds of figures seen here and lets NOT forget....Cameron does NOT have a 100 plus Commons majority to fall back on...

As rightly pointed out CAMERON with an open goal of the worst global economic crisis in a century, the most unpopular PM in a century and a broken Labour Party could NOT form a majority Government....HE NEVER WILL!

Most disturbing for the Tories is that "brand Cameron" is now toxic.....linked with sleaze, corruption, arrogance and the basic fact that "they cant be in this together as they are toffs".....

The London Mayoral election can be spun and spun and spun and spun by the Tories as much as they like....IF boris wins it is a bigger WORRY for Cameron than for Miliband since Boris is neither a proud Tory ( he refused to use the word Conservative Candidate on much of his election material) nor a Cameroon.....he is indeed a very very real threat to Cameron who will be squeezed from the right by Boris and from the left by Miliband....

One final point....

WARSI likening UKIP - a natural home for MANY disaffected traditional Tory voters as "like the BNP" will turn out to be the BIGGEST POLITICAL GAFFE of this Parliament as take it from me...many Tories I know were "toying with UKIP" now with that bullshit from an unelected racist Tory nobody who is promoted way way way above her ability on the grounds that she is a "token muslim" will see Tories deserting to UKIP in their droves taking Councillors and possibly even a few MP's with them!

so java - stop telling lies and have a little humlity like most others would be, and have been, under such circumstances...

I agree with this sentiment Mr E, but quite why voters think the solution is Milliband is beyond me.  Irrespective of what you think of him, he still has all the old cronies in his shadow cabinet.  They are taking the voters for fools.  And it seems the voters indeed are fools.  Sad

32% turnout...

Clays hit the nail on the head. that turnout is ridiculously low to be drawing comparisons about much. as i posted on another thread, the figures based on that turnout for the whole population are

68% f*ck all politicians, can't be @rsed party
12% labour party
10% tory party
5% lib dem party
5% others

this may be a success in terms of one party beating another party. but its a total failure of UK democracy. no party that gets elected will have a majority mandate to do anything based on this.

pity the main parties are so focused on their pathetic pantomime point-scoring against each other, and it seems the majority of people are sick and tired of it.

any party that can re-engage the vast majority has an open goal. but that would require politicians that cared (or appeared to care) about anything other than their own narrow vested interests.

The big problem for Boris is the Council elections....

EXPECT a huge swing Lib Dems (defending seats at high water marke 4 years ago) to Labour and a BIGGER swing Conservative to Labour.....(classic mid term protest)....

Its a leap of faith for Boris to expect people to vote Labour in Council/LONDON elections BUT then to vote Boris....in Mayoral election....

KEN WILL WIN BY AROUND 5% on second preference...

Sorry java, but as predicted our Gideon took to the pages of today's MoS doing just that.

Too smug and arrogant to assume that the voters understood it fully and didn't like it.
