The likes of Karla are talking about essential public sector workers as if they are an indivisble group. Is that the case or do you think that some are essential and therefore pretty indispensible whilst at the other end of the spectrum others are freeloaders whose main function is to build a little empire whilst trying to con the rest of us into thinking that they do a worthwhile job with the rest somewhere between the two?

Obviously this is an important issue because we need to cut out the dead wood and parasites whilst cherising those who work hard doing sterling work.

I know through a chap who works for a local council that in his opinion the council could function as well with a third of the employees.

If we were to accept that, 2/3 of the people are not essential.
Even if every role were essential the inefficiencies create non essential workers.

The management staff in the NHS always get stick. They have been doing so for as long as I can remember.
Clearly management is needed to run a health service, but point repeatedly made is that the number of managers is too high.

So the question is two fold.
What roles are non essential?
Where is there over staffing?

I'm beginning to think he's actually serious with these type of questions.

I don't know what's worse, the fact he believes all the tripe he reads in the Daily Mail or the fact he is stuck in some 1980's time warp believing the task of LA's is just to empty bins.

He's dumber than a second coat pf paint.

Oh don't be so daft of course there is overstaffing.
As someone who has worked in both sectors I can tell you the use of budgets set every tax year always leads to overstaffing.
It's only since I moved to the public sector a couple of years ago that I got the time to read the betfair forum again Laugh

is a fireman still arguing with a council worker about who is more important?

their employer is spending too much money based on their receipts, and is not increasing its receipts by either presiding over a booming economy or increasing taxes.

so it needs to cut costs and i cannot see how it can do that without reducing its employee count.

their employer is pretty useless so is likely to make bad decisions about who goes.

i pity them really, and guess they need to argue on here to take their minds off it.
Report six gun • March 22, 2012 10:52 AM GMT
What a stupid statement from Karla.
Out of the 100 000's of employees not a single one is non essential. Every single one is vital.

As I remember I brought to the forum some information about the masses of Climate Change Officers at Camden Council.

This link is something to do with this.
The councils have been criticised about wasting money of these essential people.

Oh look, we have some surplus in the budget at year end, shall we get another member of staff in so I can seem more important. Don't know what they will do yet but it will help me build up my department (ie Empire Building).

Private Sector
--------------
What benefit will this staff member bring? Will it help with our SLA? We need to justify this expenditure.

There are non-essential jobs in BOTH SECTORS....

Many Public sector Companies retain staff way way past their useful working life in terms of profitability and/or pay them commission as opposed to full wages on retainers...

Go down ANY HIGH STREET or SHOPPING MALL and hundreds DO NOT EARN their keep in the PRIVATE SECTOR....

At any given time in my working life n senior management in the PRIVATE SECTOR I could (and maybe should) have got rid of 25-30% of STAFF if productivity an efficiency was the main driver...

It is funny how the Public sector knockers TOTALLY IGNORE transgressions in the PRIVATE SECTOR!

There are huge inefficiencies in BOTH!

The difference is that I advocate and would gladly run into a burning building for free because I want to help my local community. Many of the fire stations on the continent are staffed by volunteers. I see no reason why that shouldn't also be the case in this country.

Whilst on the actual topic of the public and private sector they fail to understand the KEY ECONOMIC FACT....

Indeed IT CAN BE ARGUED...

That if EVERY PRIVATE SECTOR FIRM got rid of their deadwood and reduced THEIR COSTS the EVERY PERSON in the K would gain FAR MORE PER PRIVATE SECTOR JOB EFFICIENCY than PUBLIC SECTOR JOB EFFICIENCY via drastically reduced charges for their produce!

Frankly if I set up my own private sector business and hire 100 chimps on 100k to sit eating bananas and defacating then that is my business.  If effects nobody.  Obviously I will make no money, but at least I am paying business rates, rent, National Insurance on my chimp wages etc.  Who cares?

According to one source NE Lincs council added over 1,000 staff to their roster from 2002 ( the last year the UK ran a balanced budget ) to 2010.
These posts are necessary as back in 2002 we all know that many essential tasks were not being done - there was litter, climate change, anti-social behaviour, poverty, crime, desperation and poor public relations in every borough.
To conclude the opposite that the essential roles these staff all now do are actually non-essential or were being done by fewer staff working more efficiently pre-2002 would make you a fool and a Nazi.

This is local government for you.. from my friend mailing me from the workplace!

Monday office - old filing and planning the week ahead.
Tuesday 'seat training' sessions.
Wednesday 'worked from home'

Thursday:
''On my own again - having spent the last 20 minutes talking to my boss who is sort of working at home, (also now finished)  Stopped even pretending to work for today''.

Friday: 11am!!
''Have the office to myself for a while - everyone who was in has either finished for the day or gone out to enjoy the sunshine.''

Writing agendas, typing minutes, cancelled and postponed meetings, training council workers how to adjust and sit on their new seats.

That's one weeks work for £700+pensions/expenses etc!
Makes me pretty angry tbh!
Work hard Karla - we know it's different in your office.
