Depends what you are playing, but a basic grasp of maths and an understanding of pot odds both actual and implied is surely essential in all formats.

From an STT perspective, knowledge of ICM and Nash Equilibrium are also pretty essential. A lot of losing STT players would be winning players if they grasped these 2 concepts.

Pattern recognition / Spatial Awareness / Strategic and tactical thinking and analysis.

Not just Mathematics. Music. Chess. Other games: backgammon, bridge, diplomacy, risk. On loads of computer strategy games for the younger generation.

Working out turning points, being flexible, and knowing when to zig and zag. Concentration and patience.

Helps with risk, and bankroll management too.

And post-game analysis your own game and others.

Just a few thoughts.

Maths theory can be dull. It's the applied maths theory to poker that may help. Really up to you.

I dont think doleites are degenerates, lol. I got made redundant in 2010 and spent a big chunk of time on the dole, to be honest I loved it during the summer , rent paid, council tax paid, £65 a week off the social and making a couple of hundred a week grinding poker, the rest of the time playing golf, reading books in the garden, and walking the dog down the beach.

Spent 2011 temping, few months working, couple of months playing poker, few months working etc.

Decided this year  to go back into full time work cos the right job came up and long term would rather be working than playing poker.

Once I got reasonbly decent at at STT's I started running old hand histories through ICM and heads up hands through Nash, just to get an idea of how far away from mathematically perfect poker I was, and up until the back end of last year I still did. Being on the dole is an ideal time to really deconstruct your game and plug leaks. To be honest I found looking at hand histories as interesting as playing. You can get away with being average at low stakes, but once you move up to $20, $30, and upwards games, you need to be playing very good poker if you are multitabling.

It isn't vital to study of course. Plenty of people make money playing average poker in low stakes STT's while making fundamental errors. And I'm sure there are those people who think they already know it all. There are also plenty of people who used to make money but now lose, who blame it on the fact its r1gg3d when the reality is they have been playing on auto pilot and never analyse their game.

Where I do despair of some doleites is when they dont use all that fabulous spare time constructively, and instead spend all day every day talking about imaginary bets on chit chat, or hanging round the betting shop/boozer.

You would be amazed at how much good stuff is out there on the net free. The strategy section of the poker player website is always worth a read for starters.Posting hand  histories on here is also a good way to get constructive criticism.

God only knows, it's like pulling teeth.

My understanding was that it was happening 18th June, so I booked two days holiday off work. Now I'm not so sure it's going ahead.

If it does happen I very much doubt I will be sitting there exchanging pleasantries.

Hows the JT home game going ? Still "pending" ?

"I got made redundant in 2010 and spent a big chunk of time on the dole, to be honest I loved it during the summer , rent paid, council tax paid, £65 a week off the social"

Think this says it all really, gambling drop-out layabouts. Don't blame you guys, blame the government for letting lazy tikes like you to get away with doing this. Take my advice joker, don't waste your time trying to be "skilled" at poker as chipfire suggests you do (how he doesn't see this as wasting your time when unemployed just shows how deluded he is), go out and learn a real skill and take life by the scruff of the neck but be prepared to work hard and not chase easy money. Good luck m8.

Cheezer forgot to add.

Then spend your time trolling people on forums who are actually genuinely helpful.

Be as bitter and twisted as possible at all times.

HTH!

I guess i must be one of those gambling drop-out layabouts.
I play micro cash for about seven hours a day and get jobseekers, rent and council tax paid.
To net the same ammount of cash every month i would need a tax paying job of at least £40k.
For the young people though i would say that education and a good career is the way to go rather
than full time poker.
Report chipfire227 May 26, 2012 5:03 PM BST
Yep, it was completely my fault that after 25 years of working full time, and paying a shedload in tax, the company I worked for went into liquidation, and I got made redundant along with 1100 other people .What a lazy dropout huh ? Laugh

I claimed contribution based JSA which I was entitled to, and while on the dole supplemented that with money I made from poker off cheezer and his chums. Absolutely nothing wrong with that, I'd paid into the pot all my life and was taking out what I was due. Alternatively I could of course, as Thrappers points out, spent my time trolling, but hell, where's the fun in that ?
Report cheezer May 27, 2012 8:37 AM BST
just lol.

So having an opinion on poker and disagreeing with someone who says that claiming off the state whilst going to bed at 3am and getting up at 11 am to gamble all day is trolling?

I probably gave this guy the best advice he could expect after starting this thread and would only encourage anyone to play poker as a hobby/past time as IN MY OPINION it must be a sad existance to sit there all day in the hope of winning a few quid.

Chipfire, you worked for 25 years before getting made redundant so fair play to you but if you had a real skill in your line of work you would of had no problem but i'm guessing your job was a nothing job that anyone could do after 3 days training.

like I said, goodluck to anyone who is willing to work hard for a living rather then chasing the easy buck and remember that for every 1 that gets lucky, there are dozens of them that don't.
Report chipfire227 May 27, 2012 10:40 AM BST
I could have moved away from home for work, I was offered a position in Glasgow within a couple of days, but I wasn't prepared to live in another country to the one my kids lived in.

I live in a part of the country where work is hard to come by. I do about 8 hours a week voluntary work with a youth organisation and also with the Youth Offending Service, and believe me there's plenty of kids out there desperate for graft that can't find it.

Real skill in my line of work....I dont know about that. Its pretty specialised work, but yeah, you could have a stab at it after 3 days training I guess. The end results might be a bit like your efforts at poker though. Wink
