A few of you have asked for the community game to be password protected (which is possible)

There are obviously pros and cons to doing this and I would be interested to get your thoughts.
Please take a moment to fill in our one question survey and debate the topic below.

The thing is it is meant to be a community game to promote the forum.

Putting a password on the forum at least means that if people want to play then they must visit the forum every week.

We have many playing the quiz and listening to John's broadcast all via the forum so I personally think password protected is better.

Who you kidding HF Laugh? A password would just be a temporary obstacle, kind of like using your finger to make a hole in water. Visiting the forum does not mean contributing to it.

Also - is this limited to the forum? or do twitter and facebook users not need to be considered?

If people play the game they might warm to the in game chat and quizzes better and then contribute more to the forum.

It will only lead to calls for the password to be changed and then the password not updated and more people complaining. We have not had a password for a while now and there have not been issues.
Report Helmuthian Folds November 17, 2011 6:02 PM GMT
Disagree Klup,

At least people would have to visit the forum so they MAY contribute.  If they don't have to come to the forum then they certainly won't.

There have been issues as people have complained about it!

Anyone can visit the forum and anyone can get the password, level playing field for everyone and no need for any password changes.
Report singlecask November 17, 2011 6:19 PM GMT
If I can just chip my pennys worth in..This was the COMMUNITY game if it is still the community game then a password has to be wrong as any plyer on betfair has to be considered a member :)

I am sure it was never the forum game so think the visting/using the forum as an argument for or against is a non starter.

Perhaps you can give the pros and cons on why it needs a password mr pokerprmanager.
Report Johnnielove November 17, 2011 6:25 PM GMT
I would say protection is always best.
Report Helmuthian Folds November 17, 2011 7:17 PM GMT
I take ur point SC but as the COMMUNITY game what do you think that means?

You have to click on the COMMUNITY tab to get to the forums so as far as Betfair is concerned community means forum is the way I see it.
Report Keith A November 17, 2011 7:22 PM GMT
I agree with Thrappers, someone reading the forum and not posting is still using the forum and therefore fine by me. Each to his own
Report chipfire227 November 17, 2011 7:30 PM GMT
It was definitely an issue when there was $250 in added prizemoney each week, and only about 40 runners making a massive overlay. The game was plundered by a few Eastern Europeans who point blank refused to engage in the chat facility even at final table and heads up.

Not being in the least bit xenophobic there, because the game is meant to be enjoyable and have a Community feel where people can have a fairly relaxed game and a chat. All I'm saying is that a few were playing it purely and simply for the overlay, didnt join in any of the banter, and vanished as soon as the added prize money went. The only chat they indulged in was begging for the password.

If there is no added prize money on the night, why do you need a password ? And if you have to answer the quiz questions on the thread in here, wont people have to visit the forum to participate in that anyway ?
Report The Klup November 17, 2011 7:37 PM GMT
And on that note from Chipfire ... The argument to NOT apply a password has been upheld.

Passwords are designed to exclude people - where as this community is intended to be inclusive.

Report chipfire227 November 17, 2011 8:38 PM GMT
You have to consider what your long term objectives are for the game. Personally I think it needs another 30-40 players to give it more of an MTT feel, but I guess others would be happy keeping the fields below 50 runners.

If you want to get the game bigger numbers wise, sticking a password on there is counter productive, and seems totally contrary to advertising the thing on the poker promotions page.

The problem of course is persuading "the right people" to participate at a time when Betfair seems hellbent on driving people away. This week we have had the Leaderboard fiasco, and we have also been excluded from Prize Mountain, even though I'm convinced our poker play was taken into consideration when the targets were set penalising us twice.

If you have a promotion where people have to play hunt the password, or you are relying on someone at Ongame setting it, aren't you just inviting trouble ?
Report GrandTilt November 22, 2011 1:57 PM GMT
Still not 100% sure what to do about this despite the poll showing a conclusive 80% want a password 20% don't.

I want to grow the game and a password would limit this.
What I propose is to review this after this league has finished (6 weeks)

If the player experience is diminished by a flood of non forumites we can introduce a password.
From my personal experience it was quite intimidating playing in the tournament - bit like going to a work party where everyone knows each other. It may just take time for them to feel relaxed and start chatting.

Hope everyone is OK with this.
Report The Klup November 22, 2011 4:16 PM GMT
The question asked in the survey would in theory only be of particular interest to those who want it password protected. Those who didn't give a monkeys about a password were much less likely to vote.

How many unique votes were actually made? If only between 4 and 12 voted for a password and between 1 and 3 against ... then that survey needs some serious help! Instead of a % comparison, - i think assess it by total count. How many actually voted for a password against a say 50 / 60 players who normally play the game.

PS: I refer to your : "I want to grow the game and a password would limit this."
Does that not answer your question?

Report The Klup November 22, 2011 5:32 PM GMT
Just 8 wanted it. IMO - No password then.
Report Helmuthian Folds November 22, 2011 5:37 PM GMT
So Klup 8 people wanted a password and 2 didn't and you were one of those.

You are trying to bulldozer the no password option through with no backing, no evidence to support you and no numbers.

Why would those who don't want a password not vote?

The fact is many didn't vote because they don't mind either way but of those that did vote an overwhelming majority wanted a password.

No doubt you will come back with more bulldozing double spaek but the facts are that a vote was taken and your point lost.

End of.
Report The Klup November 22, 2011 6:23 PM GMT
Ok HF, you have convinced me. I fully agree with your argument seeing that 80% have voted for a password. It makes incredible sense to have one.

PS - i just did a vote in grantham and 80% of voters have agreed that all people who live in Stockport should spend 3 hours every sunday morning collecting litter.
Report Helmuthian Folds November 22, 2011 6:37 PM GMT
More double speak what a shock.

I still think a password is a good idea but think that BFPRM's idea to wait and see till the end of this series is the correct path.

It is the way you dismiss a poll that has gone against you as worthless yet if 10 people had voted and 8 had of said they didn't want a password it would have been a mandate for your opinion and you would not have been ridiculing the sample size.

You are fast becoming a politician, unfortunately a Lib/Dem one! Wink

PS.  Would take 3 hours to pick up all the chocolate bar wrappers you threw out of your car window on your last visit!

Once upon a time quack, you were unknown too. Sorry if im thick, but im told its because i was dropped on my head as a baby, how exactly would a password actually prevent 'unknown players' taking part? Is the password not going to be posted on a public forum?

Why stop there? Why not have the community game limited to entry by ticket only? If someone makes 5 posts during the week, they are entitled to a ticket. That will keep the unknowns out!

Yes Dino, we all have been unknown but we are part of the forum and password shown here will be visible to anyone who is interested in, no doubt there will be some who will give it away in chat MAYBE, but to see the password they will have to VISIT this forum sometimes.
Idea about tickets for 5 posts per week is also good one. Anything is better then this.Love
Report Helmuthian Folds November 22, 2011 8:12 PM GMT
Klup you deliberately ignore earlier points made.

Unknown players at least have to 'visit' the forum and if they visit the forum they may well see the banter going on in the Kunkuwap thread and actually join in.  Then the game might do what it was originally set out to do which is to increase the forum activity and community.

But don't let any of this rational argument get in the way of your one man bulldozing mission!
Report The Klup November 22, 2011 9:11 PM GMT
So how will forcing them to look at the forum for a password encourage them to talk?

They will still come to the forum to look at points updates, to answer questions etc.

If they dont play the game because they dont have the password, will they really sit and watch all the banter at the tables?

Come on thrappers - your heads  stuck in so deep, you can see your own adams apple ;)
Report Helmuthian Folds November 22, 2011 9:34 PM GMT
Jesus wept, are you still bleating on?

It forces no-one to do anything but look at the forum but is does increase the chance of them talking and getting involved which is the idea of a community.

Not saying I've got any authority to offer this, just a suggestion. Nowt else happening on the site on a Sunday night.

Possibly password protected. LaughLaugh

Yes sounds good Sunday game.

On banter - apart from some mad ramblings from me about the chelsea game and my ko came just on the injury time winner I have no idea. I did not even put some random answers to a quiz that I was not listening to. Next time I'll put some random answers in.

Still have not worked out tonight's midsomer murder and I was supposedly watching it and having my stack knocked off. Lost a cash buy in too.

Needs to attact attention. But I'll stop the random dribbling in case it discourages new forumites...CrazyCrazyCrazyCrazy

Gills there is a cash alternative to the top prize in the Wednesday night league.

If we managed to get something  up and running on a Sunday and the winner got a BF London Live Seat, I'm pretty sure someone would make you a decent offer for it should you win it, as plenty on here will be playing it.

The prizes are UK based ones as it's meant to be our Community Game with the emphasis on the fun side of the game, where people are encouraged to join in with the banter and the radio show, hopefully with the long term aim of getting people along to a community live event.

If that sounds a bit xenophobic, it certainly isn't meant to be. When we just had the added prize money each week which was generating a decent overlay, you had people from Eastern Europe playing it purely for the value, and making no attempt to engage in chat, even when you were down to the last few on the final table. There's plenty of other standard MTTS on the site, this one was meant be different and people were supposed to show bluffs and enjoy the subsequent banter. An online event with more of a live feel about it, if you like.
Report ladycarla December 5, 2011 2:32 PM GMT
Wouldn't it be simple to have a rule that you must of been a member of the forum for at least six months and posted a mininum number of posts(whatever you think reasonable)that way you stop any Tom**** or Harry joining for the overlay and if they had posted say 20 posts then they would of been involved in some of the topics and by the time they qualified for the tourny they would already know at least some forumites.

The password should stay to keep it 'community', if your worried about getting numbers up then lots of ways to get new players. Send emails to poker players who consistently generate player/betfair points, do a big overlay so players want to be involved($1500 added with buy in $11)you got to look long term and this time year you could have a really excellent community tournament what people will be talking about and that could only generate more new customers who would pay for all the overlay.

Betfair needs to look long term and give something back to their poker players instead of taking it all of the good things away.

The Sunday Game looks 90% certain to start in the New Year, with a poker related prize via a league table. I'm pushing for a BF Prague seat, but a lot will depend on how many people play it, and what the buy in is.Certainly the heads of department at Mondays Q and A session were all in favour of an expansion, there was even talk of the possibility of having it linked to a radio show like the Wednesday one, hosted by Hans, the new BF poker pro.

The Wednesday game last week attracted thirty odd runners, which was a massive drop on the week before, presumably because it was PLO, and I've suggested they scrap the PLO games in future leagues as it's clear from previous events that people simply don't want to play them.

Im pretty sure that BF PR Manager had confirmed that for the time being there would not be a password as a quick look at the Leaderboard confirms all of those in the running for prizes were genuine forumites, but that it would be reviewed again further down the line.
Report GrandTilt December 14, 2011 12:10 PM GMT
Just to re-iterate what chip said.

We will aim to have a Sunday Community tournament for the New Year which will have a live poker related prize instead of sport. Depending on how generous the bosses are feeling it will either be a package to our Live event or a ticket to a satellite for GSOP/Live events. Just finding out if we can internationalise the tournament on a Sunday, however, the counter argument is that most of our community is English and write/engage in English. Will investigate further and report back.

PLO will be removed from the next schedule for Wednesday night games (New Year)

There will be no password for either game unless we see a sharp increase in people we don't know from the forum or are not engaging with others during the game. We can monitor this going forward.

Any thoughts on the above?

The suggestion that Klup looks at the possibility of running a team event on a Sunday to compliment the Community Game is a good one, hopefully a lot of people would play both if they ran alongside each other, and we could get some decent banter going.

I'd like to think we sold the idea quite well to the bosses present at the Q and A session on Monday. Blush
