I had similar the other day:

Holding A5, flop comes down xA5. Bet something. 5 on the turn giving me FH. I shove and get called by QQ. River comes a Q and I lose with FH 5's over A's being lower than Q's over 5's. Sickening, but not hugely surprising.

First hand harsh.Cry
Second hand standard. Though from pre-flop action villain may have added 29 to your range?Laugh

Though I do not think I'm over GSOP Main 1 and 9 hours to get all in v one player pre-flop with Aces v Ace-King - little consolation for my biggest score when I was dreaming of a 5 figure payout.

Just keep believing that long-term you are doing the right thing. And everything else is part of the game - even on this site.CoolCoolCoolCoolCoolCool

Personally I have deleted the software from Betfair and all the other online poker companies. I think you have to ask yourself if you play because you really believe you will turn in a reasonable profit for your time, or purely because you are addicted. I am lucky that I am walking away a few thousand quid in profit overall, but I just don't believe it is possible to make a decent profit anymore.

ok i agree with you wykh but playing a few games in evening time doesnt mean to be addicted

atlast someone took the money from this site and walked away with the smile on face !Happy

Thanks Denny. I gave up for 4 months then thought, well I might as well play a bit in the evening while watching telly if I am not actually losing money. But actually I realise now it was a mistake playing again. The nature of the game is such that, for me at least, there is no enjoyment whatsoever in breaking even if it means a succession of seemingly unlikely bad beats which just put one in a bad mood. Better to do something else with one's time. But hey if you enjoy it then stay with it and I wish you the best of luck.

Deny I agree with you on this point. The size of the buy in should not make any difference to the feeling if the suck out. Generally though the higher buy-in in my experience means you get a lot less of the play any 2 suited disconnected cards - though when it does happen all you say wft and wonder how, why, and do you understand the game. Just remember long term what you do is +EV. And if it helps remember there is an inherent bit of luck to this game.

With Wykh - I'm not convinced that this site is worse than any others that I play or have played on. Nor the standard of player.

As for addicted. Yes probably, though it is because I'm competitive in whatever I do, and it has been me for a very long time. Perhaps from wanting to please my parents and my teachers at school work. Perhaps it was because I was small when I was younger.

Not easy being the shortest goalkeeper. Though I think I can play football anywhere, against any team. I still do and I'm 49. And invested some of my poker winnings in my edgar david goggles.

I played rugby - the bigger they are the harder they fall? Played with some guys at university too. It was only years later that i realised some friends that I played with were a bit more competitive and talented than me. One captained Scotland and the British Lions, the other was an England Scrum half and still coaches. Only gave that up for my eyesight and inability to wear contact lenses.

At 13 i was running the sort of times on the track that Coe and Ovett did at the same age. When I was seriously ill (bronchial pneumonia) and the doctor advised giving up sport because I developed asthma. I became depressed. Eventually got a doctor that said this was the worst thing I could do. It took a while to get fit again. Missed a whole term from school. Rapid weight loss too (so I've got stretch marks like I'd given birth).

Still at 21 I ran a hilly sub 4 hour marathon on 1 weeks notice/training. My mates had got sponsorship. Later I ran London Marathon and finished even though I broke a foot just before crossing Tower Bridge.

But this competiveness is me - and you are right it is addictive behaviour.
So that is why I enjoy hill-walking, rambling and scrambling. And occasionally, I bite off a bit more than I should and get in trouble. I've learnt that it is others that suffer from this. My timing is better and I still enjoy getting away and walking.

I play chess - I think I can beat anyone. I try all the time. Though I try not to play too much internet chess as quite honestly I suspect my opponents are using a computer. Played last night over the board. I should have lost to a far weaker and younger player. He had me competely busted and I was on the verge of resigning but he made a simple technical mistake himself and having analysed the game with me afterwards I'm pretty sure he will not make that same mistake again. I think there is luck in chess. I certainly was lucky last night.

I'm glad that you have made a profit. But I never got into poker to make a profit. The fact that I have made a profit I believe is just a by-product that over the games that I have played and over a range of opponents, I have played better than them. And that luck/probability is even in that long-run (which for me is now 5 years).

I enjoy playing MTTs at the moment more than cash or STTs - I am wary of suspected collusion. That does not mean I do not play them from time to time. And I do play on other sites.

I would like to play a bit more live than I currently do (but that is only for the social aspect).

Being the competitive person that I am I'm aware that money is a way of keeping score. What you do with that money is where your priorities lie. Hopefully I will not get into the position where I have to play for making a living. But in the current economic climate who knows?

This is far too long a post!

Deny - don't let the suck-outs get to you. I've given up trying justifying the play. I just make a note and visual aid saying NUTTER so that when they appear again I'm a bit more wary.

Wykh - if you want a game of chess just send a message using the e-mail on top of forum. Though I also play at letsplaychess.com under the name NickTheFlick

Tonight got busted in the rehab. Kings v AQ and AKs (lost to flush on river) 16BB deep.
Lost in the 2100 $5.50 MTT got Aces (10BB deep) all in pre-flop up against a call (13BB deep why) with that monster 69s. 2 sixes on flop. And another NUTTER on my notes.
On other side I also pushed a short stack 8BB 77 v KK and lost. And also got AK all in pre-flop re-raise 17BB v Tens and did not hit.

And wykh - I think you should still play what I would say is the community tournament but is actually Kunku Wap's Ambassador's challenge - as the banter is friendly.

And also, the ILPP Klups 72 - for the same reason.

Deny - good night too. And good luck next time you play.

Thanks for the offer Nick. I play chess at chess.com usually but I do have an account at letsplaychess.com so I will look out for you there. You are right that there is also luck in chess, and indeed I suspect some players do use a 'bot' sometimes. Like you I hate to lose at any game, but its not so bad if you are not also getting ripped off at the same time.

Online poker is a highly addictive game, and many are addicted whether they admit it to themselves or not. With such things I personally find it easier to just not play at all than trying to just play a little bit, similar to smoking.

It's hard to say if there is much difference overall between different poker sites. It is probably so much masked by the effect of variance that you would have to play for years to make a proper comparison. My belief, which you can call irrational if you want, but is based on large-scale statistical studies of more than one site, suggest to me that in post flop all-ins the best hand does not win as often as it should. Whether this is due to the software or to cheating I have no idea, but it has the effect of reducing one's ROI to an extent that you can only beat the rake by 1 - 2 %, which is no longer attractive to me.

Good Luck anyway, and hopefully see you on the chess table!

I've seen a lot worse bad beats tbh.
You might wait hours for a  half decent hand,
even then there's no guarantee it'll win.
A K's are quite a dangerous hand to hold imo.
What else did you have? 3 jacks and a beatable
full house.
Like I say, no guarantees.
