Just basics to start Ray.
Try and play hands that can scoop. Getting yourself in hands where you are a 'lock' one way and freerolling to scoop is nice. Always make sure you are drawing to the nuts in multiway pots (Longterm money saver) Always make sure you can make the nut low if your hand contains low cards. What i mean by that is if you have a hands like A67J, 649T etc then they will cause you trouble. Avoid hands like 6789, 89TJ (Middle wraps) Although these hands are strong in hi only they are long term money losers in hi/lo. Reason is that for you to make the nut straight would usually mean that someone has made the low and could well be freerolling to make a flush/full house etc. Watch out for spots where you are quartered. If you are going to be quartered then make sure it is in a multiway pot as opposed to heads up or 3 way. If you have a nut low draw heads up but not a lot else then give up. I've seen so many players call a flop bet with a low only draw and no real back up only to make the low and quarter themselves. Hi pairs, bigger wraps and hi only hands can be played profitably in position, and ideally in multiway pots where there is enough money in the middle to make people pay to draw on you when you flop the goods. You will also find hands easier to play with more experience obviously. Reading players hands becomes easier the more you play, and contary to what people think you can pick up a lot of 'dead' pots when you know players have entered the pots with low only hands but have given up with no draws. Avoid all hands that you would considerplaying in hi only games. You'll see so many players playing hands like... KQ55 KT27 88A9 7749(You get my drift ;) ) Hands that contain low pairs become dangerous if you flop a set, lets say you have the first hand i showed 'KQ55' and the board came 259... Players will stack off on this board and could be either almost dead to a set of nines or in awful shape to someone with a low wrap..... They are just money losers. Having 3 baby cards is a bonus to help avoid counterfitting problems. Be careful when your low changes... Example, you hold A27K... Flop is 368... At this stage you have nut low..... but if an Ace drops on the turn then your hand becomes a '7' low and is beaten by so many hands now. That's all i can think of for now mate, enjoy, try and play as many flops as possible to lear....as cheaply as possible. Be wary of Pocket Aces ;) You'll understand what i mean by that in time :) :) |

I'm not JPJ, but I have a little experience playing mainly fixed limit Omaha 8. Generally speaking, 2 way hands are ideal but can be hard to come by. You need to be looking for A-2-wheel-paint, preferably with the A suited. Hands like A-2-7-9 can be trouble and if there's a lot of players and action in the pot, you can be in danger of getting quartered for the low half, or worse still, getting counterfeited.
If you want to play a high only hand, best to see a flop cheaply and in position and make sure all 4 cards are higher than a 9. Never play them from early position. If you're drawing to the high only, make sure it's to the nuts. Hands with 3 babies but without the A can be played, again in position, especially if there hasn't been much action in front. From that you can guess that all the Aces are either still in the deck or in the blinds and an A on the flop in that situation can be great for your low. AA doesn't play well on it's own. Best to have them suited with another low card or two and to try to isolate with them. Hope this helps until JPJ gets here :) |

Too late! lol. Just do what JPJ says!

One of the main problems with AA is that it's just one pair which is hard to improve. If you do hit your set, that A on the board could help with someone else's low and back to hoping that it holds for the high half. Thus the importance of having your Aces tied in with some low potential.

Another question lol. I often see people in no limit games jamming their entire stack of 2k into a pot of 400. What do you generally need to call (I know it depends on the board, but in general - at least one of the nuts or draws, or can it be a lot less?)
|
|

It's just pure gambling. Omaha 8 is incredibly card dependant and you don't really know anything about your hand until you see it in relation to the flop. This is why I prefer the limit variety. You're oppo in the hand above was drawing thin to any part of the pot on the turn and got lucky for the scoop. Based on your action, he should have concluded he was up against at least A-2, which dominates him for the low. Plus his raggy flopped 2 pair is incredibly vulnerable for the high.
I'm not sure (because it's NL), but I think you played it fine. I'll leave the more detailed analysis for JPJ. |

NL overbets usually mean at least one way nut, if not both. You should consider calling if you have a nut hi which is not vulnerable and want to split the pot (might be worth it to keep a short stack short). Nut lo is harder as you could be quartering yourself, this would be player dependent and if you think anyone else is going to call and if you have draws to a nut hi hand.

Thanks again to both. Lots to learn by the look of it ;)

Think your choices on the flop were to bet less, maybe half pot or shove then. He was probably going for the split with his A3 with the outside chance of a high 2 pr being good, and the relative stack sizes will have played into this decision. If he loses he is not in bad shape, if he splits he is where he started, if he wins, you are out.
