Action Script is a prehistoric version (or set of codes/commands) of Flash, correct?

a.s was Macromedia Flash who were bought out by Adobe, correct?

So when a banner has the extension .as or .asp it is in effect linking to a Flash banner (albeit old style source code?).

Bascially, a slow moving banner on a site that is written in Action Script could in fact be written in Flash?

And also, can a banner written in the latest Flash version be down-compiled (whatever the word is) to be .as/.asp? Is there a tool for this?

Thank you

Sorry, would have replied sooner but had the new 21 year missus round :)

You're almost there. Actionscript is a core component of Flash. It's still updated so not to be mistaken for an outdated component and for many programmers, it is the only aspect of Flash they will touch.

Yes.

So when a banner has the extension .as or .asp it is in effect linking to a Flash banner (albeit old style source code?).

.as files are actionscript files
.asp files in this case are Active Server Pages (written in another scripting language and not to be confused with actionscript.

Bascially, a slow moving banner on a site that is written in Action Script could in fact be written in Flash?

I don't use the Flash GUI as mentioned earlier so can't say with 100% certainty but my understanding that for something this simple that the answer is yes. If you wanted to apply more complex logic to the movement of the banner such as bouncing up and down with simulated gravity then you would use actionscript.

And also, can a banner written in the latest Flash version be down-compiled (whatever the word is) to be .as/.asp? Is there a tool for this?

You need a "Flash decompiler". This will give you all the assets such as art, sound and any actionscript files.

Thank you

No probs. There may be a couple of minor details I've got slightly wrong as I very rarely use Actionscript (preferring other languages for rich internet applications) and have never touched the Flash GUI but what I've written should be pretty accurate.

excellent stuff, thanks.

Just one other question please, if a banner link ends in .asp can we determine if it's flash/.as and/or does it mean that that the banner is being hosted somewhere else and that it's 'pulled' or 'pushed' to or from where it's hosted?

So I could host a banner on my site with the link ending in .asp and the advertiser may chose to update that banner from where it's hosted instead of me having to download another flash banner?

Does this make sense...?

I'm off to the gym so will respond later. Can you explain exactly what it is you're trying to do?

It's not a Uni coursework that I'm answering for you, is it? :)
