If you cant over come 4inches of snow, then are you really capable of doing most jobs in the 1st place.
Report ladycarla January 7, 2010 9:28 PM GMT
Should get paid but they work the hours back, lets be honest every1 who works within 3 mile of workplace should walk it, every1 did years ago so whats changed!
Report Jim Hensen January 7, 2010 9:28 PM GMT
On one hand, it is not an employers risk that his staff can commute. On the other hand it would be harsh to see low paid workers go without pay when public transport was cancelled.

I think this time I would pay, but the folk that cry off every year if we get an inch would be told to plan for it or take it as leave. And I would tell them this in August lol.
Report Jim Hensen January 7, 2010 9:31 PM GMT
I think when trains and buses are canceled then it is fair to say that travelling is a risk, and no employer should encourage his workforce to take unreasonable risk.

I agree walking 3 miles would be fair, and I think most reasonable employers would return the favor with an early finish or whatever else they could do to help.

we have had lying snow since the 16th december. we have just had another 4 inches tonight. cant remember the last time the temperature went above freezing and everyone turns up at our gaff.

mind you we dont make a song and dance of it north of leeds, we just get on with it. :-)
Report BlufDaddy January 7, 2010 9:36 PM GMT
So obviously on a case by case basis.
Report joffy January 7, 2010 9:46 PM GMT
Big no from me.

Think theres a case for the government to step in if public transport in areas are all cancelled, they could do statutory snow pay and take it away from the fookers that dont wrk anyway

im pretty unimpressed with the attitude down south these days.

was meant to be travelling to london saturday morning, but the train company are already telling me i might as well not bother.

was meant to be going to a football match on the afternoon but charlton decided at 10 o clock this morning they cant be arsed and have called it off already.

no doubt the hotel will be ringing me tomorrow and telling me not to bother as they have closed for a fortnight.

and yet when i ring my mate in streatham tonight and ask him just how much snow they have had he says hardly any !

wtf ?

Just get some winter tyres ffs and tell everyone to get to work like they do in countries who have it much worse than us

(worked from home 2 days this week ;) :D )
Report Soap January 7, 2010 9:49 PM GMT
Joffy no reason your lot shouldnt be able to work from home - Shirley?
Report Jim Hensen January 7, 2010 9:57 PM GMT
I enquired about winter tyres recently and was told that they really are only for snow and ice, as opposed to a 6 month season. Is this right?

If so the cost of the tyres would be quite prohibitive for the frequency of use. What is more if you cannot drive the car to work how do you get the new tyres changed? Spare wheels? That is more cost.
Report chipfire227 January 7, 2010 9:59 PM GMT
im cycling to work as usual at half 7 in the morning. its **g character building.

tho having just been out in the garden im thinking about throwing a sickie. its coming down like a bastad.
Report Soap January 7, 2010 10:03 PM GMT
Jim before the weather is bas you take them off, say start Dec and then replavce back to originals say March.

Agree on cost but if winters are to get worse as is supposedly the case then should start it soon. Of course they can be used across many years.
Report FFsmd January 7, 2010 10:03 PM GMT
if you won a seat to the wsope and it started tomorrow, i think everyone would find a way to get there.
Report Soap January 7, 2010 10:03 PM GMT
^ good shout !!
Report Jim Hensen January 7, 2010 10:07 PM GMT
I was told that in non snow/ice they wear down like jelly on the motorway. And therefore my options were to buy new wheels and tyres and change them on off for a couple of weeks per year, or buy all season tyres which wear less but also grip less, (which seems the worse of both worlds really, still stuck and still paying for it).

And apparently snow chains are illegal in the UK. I am assuming that this is a highways issue with regards to damage to the road metalling? If so I think the LA's should swallow on that and allow them in exceptional weather when a road has not been gritted.
Report Soap January 7, 2010 10:10 PM GMT
pretty sure my mates do what i said in Belgium and Swiss, dont know much else about them tbh.
Report Jim Hensen January 7, 2010 10:22 PM GMT
Swiss it is illegal to drive without winter tyres when snow or ice conditions, and they have them for longer periods with a probable expectation that it will happen every year for a momth or more. I guess Belgium would be similar. I think France and Italy only require snow chains, but this could have changed.

Usually it would be no problem for me, but I volunteered to look after my sisters dog whilst they are away. My own dog is quite chilled out, but the other is young and definitely wired up wrong. She is a whippet cross I think and needs to run a lot, well 2 hours yesterday and still not beat. Also has a canny ability to run around with tree branches as long as a bus. The park area at the end of our street is a awash with sledges, skiers and boarders, and this dog only moves at one speed, very fast. Since my car is grounded, I am now having to walk 2 dogs, seperately 3 times per day. I cant wait to take her back now.

Too many people take the p1ss. No trouble with the trains today, I got in on time with no hassle, a guy who lives round the corner to me rang in saying there was no way he could get in because the trains were a mess.

It's just unfair on those who make a genuine effort to get in when people do that.

I was told if I couldn't get in today they'd send a taxi to my home and pay for it however had they done that they weren't gonna pay for taxis home! shocking
Report Jazzy_Jon January 7, 2010 10:30 PM GMT
Oh, went to Poland last February, snow was as bad there as it is here now and they just get on with life, nothing stops for the snow but I guess they are much more used to it

Always seen a very clear trend when working in offices. The self employed make it in, the staff lads can't make it.
Report Jazzy_Jon January 7, 2010 11:05 PM GMT
it gets noted when people bunk off when they can, if you don't wanna progress at work then make the most of the snow, if you wanna get anywhere then make the effort. simples
Report Rowland Browning January 7, 2010 11:10 PM GMT
aye the trick is to bunk off without being noticed.

They have shut the **g thing again I think the teachers in newmarket all agree about impressing in the work place. Lazy fooks.
Report jamesbeckton. January 8, 2010 1:09 PM GMT
yeah is so much their fault if half the people can't get in.
