http://www.reliabilityindex.co.uk/choose_user_reviews.html?mancode=HO&car_range=Civic

The Auris seems to be too new to compare HU. The overall manufacturer HU is as follows.

http://www.reliabilityindex.co.uk/man_index_2.html?searchtype=relindex&apc=3128339010848601

Whatcar.co.uk website does a reasonable summary of each model. If the Auris is a remake of a previous model it may be worth looking at that, but it could be almost all new design, whatcar may guide you.

Lastly,

http://www.auctionview.co.uk/source/AV/login.asp

the basic subscription is around £12, which is enough to source a single specific car. As long as you don't live in the back of beyond and have access to one or two sites within a shortish drive then they can work out well. Also if you find a car on the auciton view, do ring up and ask lots of questions before going to view/buy. The day before sale they can also tell you approximately what time, (within an hour) it will run through the block. You ought to be picking up from here at £1500 or so less than the dealer price without trying too hard. Remember that 80%+ of the cars you are looking at were under this same hammer a month or so ago.

Good luck.

PS - Honda has been top of these reliability listings for many years, and Toyota have been regularly in the good but not excellent bracket. It is most likely that the newer models will conform to this precedent imo.

I have had three toyotas in the past and one was way less reliable than the reputation suggested it should have been. Both Toyotas and Hondas seem expensive for what they are these days. The Auris seemed particularly expensive to me, and they don't depreciate nearly enough to make them a bargain second hand either.

I have been looking at new/nearly new cars a lot recently and don't think you can go far wrong with Fords these days. They are pretty much as reliable as any other European car and the fiesta, focus and mondeos are pretty much top in class in every big survey I see these days (well your average BMW 3 series is probably better than your average mondeo, but probably not £10k better). I think you could get a one year old Mondeo in your price range and it will be newer and you get way more car than you would with a 2 year old Auris/Civic.

Up to you though.

I agree with a lot of that. I came to the conclusion that the best value is to either buy a top marque, (that you like a lot), that does not depreciate much, and keep it a little longer, (say 4 years), or the other end, and get a slightly older Ford and run it like a workhorse til it is worthless. anything in between seems poor value imo.

I currently pay around £1000 extra per year in total motoring cost, (that is everything from repairs, depreciation, fuel, tax, insurance etc), and drive a nice (ish) top marque, than when I run a Corsa into the ground. The Corsa was value motoring and some. Its last months were more or less a builders van lol. The in between range appears cheaper until you factor in depreciation, and in my experience you change them more often too.

On another note, the best customer service I have ever known from a dealer was from Honda. Not stupidly expensive, and good attention to detail and fair and reasonable when there is an issue. This opinion is widely held too.

I do agree that the fords are good cars and decent value - no doubt. thing is, my current one is a ford and is causing me all sorts so just think it's time for a change.

the focus is a great car. I have one right now and it won't start lol so it's hard to buy another... irrespective of the fact that it'll be a great car and great value... I guess we're all coloured by our experiences eh?

thanks for your thoughts tho.

What about an Audi A3 / A4? They're not bad, from what I've heard anyway lol. I only have a poxy Astra :(
By:
dibble
When: 30 Dec 09 21:29
I've done that with this car Jim - 108k miles on it and if I could get it to start reliably or the local bodgit-and-scarper garage could find the problem I'd keep it.

but they can't so it has to go.

honda I think is the favourite at the mo.

Aye, them Honda Civics are nice, I might get one myself next time around. Though you should get the Type R so we could have some fun :)
By:

When: 30 Dec 09 21:32
Yeah the reliability issue is twofold. how much to repair and the hassle of being off the road. I have always had access to a second car so a breakdown is just a money issue. If it disrupts too much then the Honda is probably the way to go.

Good time to be buying though too. haggle hard.

For what its worth i have a 57 plate Civic Type S CDTi diesel and its ok

45mpg (55 when the wife drives it), goes ok and has plenty of kit

However if definatly looks a better car than it acctually is, my previous cars were lexus (toyota) IS200 and Volkswagen Passat TDi and the honda cant hold a light to either

right well, having driven the civic this morning I can happily say it's a completely underwhelming car.

the civic body has restricted view out of the back, a low driving position, big blind spots, the 1.8 is underpowered and the handling stodgy at best. couple that with the fact that the dealer wanted £12k for a 2 year old model and we did not do business.

so off to the toyota garage to try the 1.6 Auris then... only they'd just sold the one on the website but would get one in for me to look at next weekend.

right that's that for now. if the auris is similarly unimpressive then it'll be off the the mazda dealer for a look at the new mazda 3 and then (shudder) things like the new Focus come into the game.

thanks again for all thoughts.
