So I'm starting this to try and get some more posters here to talk about all things mma, all other organizations other than the ufc, kickboxing, muay thai, jiu jitsu, basically anything combat sports related. we can still make separate threads for Bigger events etc. hopefully we can improve the liquidity on the mma markets here (big ask after they switched the old site off today I know..) after the cycling forum was introduced, the other sports sub forum has essentially become the mma forum so in the future we can ask betfair about getting a separate forum for mma as suggested by a71867. There's a lot of great cards coming up, and after the exposure and all around epic nature of UFC 189, we got a lot of fights to look forward to!

they just announced yesterday Carlos Condit vs Robbie Lawler ffs!!! that could legitimately be one of the most exciting fights of all time! then we got Aldo VS McGregor late in the year most likely... who knows what's going to happen there!!

damn this aguilar chick is having her face messed up
Report razz August 2, 2015 3:31 AM BST
I skipped the maia fight for betting, bought too much into magny's win streak.I've not got a lot of bets on tonight. I do like jake shields to win on the other mma event tonight.

I'm leaning towards shogun here, he's working with rafael cordeiro his coach from his glory days. cordeiro is the same guy training Rafael Dos Anjos the LW champ, and definitely one of the coaches of the year. but then again with both of their chins it is pretty risky either way.
Report razz August 2, 2015 3:33 AM BST
I think aguilar is moving up in weight class because her's doesn't exist in the ufc. she does look a bit smaller. Gadelha could easily be the champion right now

Big Foot Silva 2.75 vs Palelei 1.5 I know Silva hasn't won much lately (his last 5 losses were rd1 KO's!) but he's fought much higher level opponents than Palelei has. Plus he is fighting at home in Brazil. I didn't see Palelei's last fight so maybe I'm missing something and he has upped his game.

I think people seem pretty convinced that since bigfoot stopped doing testosterone replacement, he just isn't the same fighter. I think he's been overated for quite some time, his recent record is pretty bad, he hasn't won a fight in 2.5 years, and lost 5 of his last 8 fights by ko : /

Report razz August 2, 2015 4:43 AM BST
GJ with that treble, in hindsight i should of known cavalcante was a bad pick he has some of the worst cardio in the sport, I hesitated because cummins got ko'd by a worse(on paper) striker than feijiao

I don't have a clue who any of these next 2 are, there's so many ultimate fighter shows I gave up trying to keep up
Report nugget August 2, 2015 4:53 AM BST
Yeah Cavalcante was tired, he just needed to be a little fitter and he would of had the KO.  Cummins' cardio and wrestling won him the fight but his face was a mess.

Not getting involved with the next two fights.

Rua vs little Nog should be good.

No bet in the rowdy vs pit bull main event. Can Correia make it out of the first round (3/1)? Rousy talking it up like she doesn't want the quick finish, probs means a win inside 30sec. lol

Apologies, football season back started for me yesterday so not got on till this morning.

I did Maia and Shogun in a double, 1/2 and 8/15, and aftertiming maybe but Ronda was 9/4 for a KO/TKO vs 3.1 on here.  Submissions was 2/5 vs 1.68 on here.  I had a cheeky bet on her to win by KO/TKO at 9/4 and was more than happy to see her refuse the take down or let her stand up when she hit the mat first time.  A different league altogether though and now her stand up has improved immensely to be just as good as anyone in the division, I don't think anyone will stop her... ever !!
Report razz August 4, 2015 1:30 PM BST
yeah I can see her being undefeated easily. I mean who else is legitimately KO'ing fighters in women's mma. She just wants to beat her opponents at their own game it seems like. Nice catch on the Ko line. I was going to load up on ko at 3.75 a few days before the fight then hedge with rousey by sub at 1.44, those were the only 2 outcomes, but I overloaded myself with bets for this card and missed out there.

This is the card for this weekend BELOW. I'm going to watch some tape on Johnson vs Dariush, as I quite like Johnson at this price. I think he's a potential champion in the making.

Main Card (FS1, 10 PM ET)

Beneil Dariush vs. Michael Johnson
Sam Alvey vs. Derek Brunson
Timothy Johnson vs. Jared Rosholt
Chris Camozzi vs. Tom Watson
Ray Borg vs. Geane Herrera

Preliminary Card (FS2, 8 PM ET)

Oluwale Bamgbose vs. Uriah Hall
Sara McMann vs. Amanda Nunes
Willie Gates vs. Dustin Ortiz
Sirwan Kakai vs. Frankie Saenz

Preliminary Card (Fight Pass, 6:30 PM ET)

I'm away at a festival until Sunday now so I'll miss the fights on sat. Be careful if your betting on Uriah hall, He has to be one of the flakiest and most unreliable fighters I've ever seen, sure he could win by ko at any moment or he could coast to a lacklustre decision loss to someone he was supposed to steam-roll. He's one of the few fighters currently on my blacklist. GL everyone.

Haven't posted in a while, been really busy lately, I was dissapointed in the holloway olivera injury, ruined a potentially great fight after a couple mins. erik silva looked like crap(quite possibly from the new testing procedures) as he looked noticeably less muscular than he used to, and it showed in his results. Cote was super impressive as well tko'ing burkman who'd never been finished by strikes up until then in his career if im not mistaken.

Looking forward to Mir vs Arlovski, maybe 5 years too late but still expect one of them to get banged out.

Not sure what Manuwa is doing against Rumble... can only see that going one way and I fear for Manuwa.  Rumble is a beast.

One bet I will be having is Ross Pearson @ 7/2 with Ladbrokes.  Look at Pearson's record, he has never had two losses on the bounce and whilst there is a first time for everything, I'm happy to take 7/2 that it don't.  I've watched a few of Paul Felder fights and he looked on the up. UFC 182 vs Danny Castillo was a great ending and he didn't let himself down against Edson Barboza in his last fight either.  Go back six months and would Pearson be 7/2 still ?  The simple answer is no.  And whilst Pearson was garbage against Evan Dunham, hopefully he can get back on track here.

Having said all that.... I've backed a few value bets this year at big prices on the UFC and I don't think any has landed !!  Value is one thing, but they still have to win the fight !! Grin
Report razz September 5, 2015 7:16 PM BST
hey WA, yeah, looking forward to mir/arlovski too, 2 former champions from a different era competing for a title shot, great comeback stories. I think I prefer that it's happening now, arlovski was just starting that losing streak that made many people believe his time as a contender to be dead and buried. agree it won't last the distance, im leaning arlovski, he should have a decent speed advantage, and also I beleive a cardio advantage. Mir will struggle to take him down in the later rounds imo if it gets that far, always the sub threat from mir though, I believe he's up there werdum/jacare in terms of sub skills.

Rumble/Manuwa is an explosive fight, but yeah rumble is eemingly better everywhere, possible manuwa can clinch with rumble, and try to tire him out, but unlikely. odds to steep to play for me. Pearson could be a good bet yeah, felder could come out swinging and ross is a great counter striker. Felder has a more diverse striking game, he looked great against barboza. I got felder by finish ultimately.
As far as value i like rivera @2.1 he really impressed me against faber, who was getting beat to every punch until the eyepoke i think it was. harder to get good value on the outright lines these days. I see more and more with some of the props however.

a few days late but this is ridiculous, 5 years of suspension for weed and nearly 200k fine. this is BS, the tests administered said he was below the legal level for 2 out of 3 tests, the 3rd was at  a lab that is not linked to the nevada commission. meanwhile anderson silva gets a 1 year ban for ACTUAL performance enhancing steroids. this is actual corruption right in front of our faces.

in other news fedor still hasn't announced where he will be signing in his return, bellator said it's unlikely he would sign there, UFC say they haven't heard anything from him for a while.

Rumours circling of him signing with a japanese promotion, so maybe thye are trying to bring back pride from the dead! i can't see him signing with dream, there's no one for him to fight there. In my opinion he could make a decent run in the ufc, i'd say he could beat arlovski/mir pretty easily based on their last fight, not to mention guys like hunt/nelson/mitrione who are ranked atm. he'd beat bigfoot if they were to rematch as well i think, bigfoot is a completely different fighter of TRT.

UFC Dublin coming up next in a couple weeks, then we have got a busy schedule of cards for the last part of the year. Duffy vs Poirier is the main event next week, really good fight, will be very interesting to see how it plays out as it's 5 rounds. I think Duffy land the better shots early on, his conditioning might come into question if it goes later however, and Poirier has a tendency of getting rocked in a lot of his fights, this could be the difference in this fight, I absolutely do not think Poirier will react well to Duffy's precise and clinical boxing arsenal, but I do think Poirier is capable of holding his own standing, and potentially even getting a tko himself.
Another reason this fights so interesting (besides a common opponent in McGregor, in which Duffy handed Mcgregor his last loss) is their respective ground games, especially their submissions with 9 out of his 14 wins being subs and Poiriers more modest 6 out of 18. duffy is a black belt in Japanese jiu jitsu, and Poirier is a brown belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, he has some of the best d'arce chokes in the sport so that is a potential worry for any Duffy backers.
with all that said I do not see it going 5 rounds at all, I think they might be using the smaller octagon cage for this event too, so there will be more likelihood of a KO

Rousey really should end this quick, holm's strong but hasn't faced the divisions best fighters, she struggled with racquel pennington who is a good fighter but not elite, and ronda's destroyed all the elite fighters in front of her.

Very emotional fight for Holly Holm... I was close to tears myself at the end of it !!  I got to the stage where Ronda was just acting in all the wrong way.  Holm hadn't spoken badly of her in any shape or form and then Ronda plays spoilt little girl at the weigh ins and then refuses to touch gloves.  I'm glad Holly knocked her down a peg or two.  I doubt very much that Holly will be marketed the same was as the poster girl was over the past few years but then again without Ronda, women's fighting will still be on the undercard at BAMMA or some of the other sub promotions.

Only had one bet on the card, on Struve at 8/11 Sad

I don't mind backing the big prices on the main fights this year but having come unstuck with pretty much everyone who I had backed at tasty prices, Saturday looked to be another one of those days where £30 on Holly at 8/1 would just be like throwing money in the bin, so I decided against that bet Sad
Report razz November 20, 2015 12:00 PM GMT
fantastic night, yeah I was pretty happy for her too, I think she's a much better face for wmma than rousey, she's all class and respectful. yeah the weigh ins in hindsight were a big giveaway, of ronda's insecurity. holly's trainer even said she deliberately underachieved in some of her previous fights, to get an advantage in this one, and unlike ronda she had a great gameplan, and was probably the first(outside of tate) to actually have a gameplan against ronda. you could see ronda just panicking and fighting with pure emotion, but she did land a couple nice punches that momentarily stunned holly though. another factor is the huge amounts of media exposure rousey had and the limited amount holly had. makes it that much harder to defend your belt with all those expectations and obligations outside of her normal routine. they brought out prices for the rematch, i got some 3.5 on holm and 2.75. currently 2.64, holm should honestly be favorite after that display but I can see ronda winning with a proper gameplan, and holm is getting up there in age now. should be interesting to see if they try and set it up for ufc 200 next year.

Gastelum by sub @ 4.5 with titanbet is good value, magny was just subbed by maia and his wrestling doesn't seem good enough to stop gastelum from taking him down, and i don't think magny is capable of working a sub from the bottom, with kelvins grappling acumen taken into account. also gastelum has 5 rounds to work for this, magny is more dangerous on the feet, but i think gastelum will have the advantage here as well, If we see a kelvin that has improved as much as he has in previous fights i think he'll finsh magny, and the easier way on paper is by sub. after looking at magny's record 3 of his 4 losses have come via sub. gastelum should also be the bigger guy on fight night, providing of course he has put his weight issues behind him, but we'll see at the weigh in tonight. Magny still has avenues to win, but I feel if he wins it'll be via decision rather than a finish, magny decision is 7.0 atm on unibet, Think I'll have to put a small bet on that too.

So when McGregor moves up, does he become the number one contender and does he get a title shot against Rafael dos Anjos immediately?
Report razz December 21, 2015 4:49 PM GMT
browser's not been letting me post Plain wow, JDS looked completely shot, possibly another victim of the new testing, but almost certainly partly down to the beating's he's taken in his last few fights. Overeem has had a lot longer to adjust to fighting without banned substances.  It was a good stoppage, The result wouldn't of changed if it went longer, an important thing to remember is that these guys are 240+lbs, Brain damage is a serious concern, and jds was not intelligently defending himself as required by the rules.

if McGregor moves up he'll likely get an instant shot, but he may choose to fight edgar first, seeing as how conor stated he wasnts to be a active 2 weight world champion and the ufc has historically not liked the idea of this as is slows up the division, Dana and co might prefer he stayed at FW for now. Jon kavanagh has stated he does not want conor making that weight ut again, so who knows at this point. he's set himself up a lot of options to mull over the festive period.

Really impressed by dos anjos though, a lot of people thought he was possibly cycling something, but that looks unlikely when you know who his conditioning coach is nick curson who has a revolutionary way of training fighters imo. and also being trained by Master cordeiro probably helps too :P surprised he starched cerrone that easily, and quickly though

damn I just rewatched kahabib nurmagomedov completely outclass dos anjos in all aspects of the sport, and that fight wasn't even that long ago, I forgot how dominant khabib was, such a shame about all those injuries. RDA has improved a lot since then tbh, but In hindsight I don't think the RDA of today would beat the khabib that beat him last year but it would be closer. RDA/kahbib/fergusson and pettis are head and shoulder above the rest of the division at this point I reckon. Barboza could still be a contender one day maybe. Duffy is another possible contender but it's too early to tell. the poirier fight will tell us a lot. I think he beats dustin at this point.

Great podcast about the evolution of mma with dan hardy and robin black, some really good insights about how fighters like hardy himself and dom cruz have improved their game from working as an analyst. well worth the listen.
