My three main plays tomorrow are Riblon, Nieve and Rolland. SKY & Movistar will want a breakaway to go and it's probably up to Saxo to attack the GC from the start. After yesterdays tactics I'll be surprised if Sky/Movistar let any Saxo riders up the road, so it is then up to Saxo to burn their team if they want to keep trying something.
In that I think the breakaway has a good chance of succeeding and the KOM fanciers will have a go. Riblon will have probably exhausted himself today but the adrenaline after saving the French blushes may push him forward. Rolland hasn't got the legs but he has been a let down in the mountains and good exposure with a chase of a journey will make Europcar happy. Nieve is my main play. He'll be desperate to get in the break and hoover the mountain points up, in good form and will be confident of being able to keep a decent position on Saturday to keep the polka dots if he gets away. All prices to trade as I doubt any of them are capable of winning the stage. |

who may go today? good stage yesterday,froome is not the superhuman machine,which is good in a way though my wallet a bit lighter after yesterday,what u reckon swinging?

I have backed the mighty Alberto Contador for today's stage. He is a massive price!!! How the feck can Andy Schleck be a shorter price than him? Bertie to attack close to the summit of the final climb and then u won't see him for dust

Hardly any mention of Froomes actions on the last climb. 20 sec penalty hardly sufficient for blatant cheating.

Movistar will attack Saxo, Quintana is just 21 secs off Contador's second place position, and wants to repay his team; but I think that this attack will come very late on the stage or perhaps won't even be necessary, since Bertie will fall off the back of a selection. Additionally, Movistar are not very tactical, so perhaps we might see something really silly from them, or nothing at all. Certainly, Valverde will be helping Quintana, and has little chance for getting the victory for himself -- he should be in the 50s and then some. SP.

The more I look at this stage, the more I consider a breakaway to succeed, however let's consider that on the final climb up Alpe d'Huez yesterday, Quintana took out more than 6mins on a tiring TJ, and about 5mins on an energised Riblon. This came after Sky let the gap blow-out to nearly 9mins, which was 7mins by the final climb.
What the breakaway has in their favour in this stage though, and what makes a breakaway the most likely scenario -- whether long range or even late -- is the 13km descent to the finish, and why I keep coming back to a breakaway succeeding. I've softened on Quintana, I don't think the finish suits him much, and by the final descent others may look much better. As a result, I've layed-off much of my early interest. Andrew Talansky was a good chance, when 3rd in the breakaway stage into Lyon, where Trentin won. But he has confirmed he has been riding solidly in the mountains, where in the Pyrenees he finished 33rd into Bagnéres de Bigorre, and 16th up to Ax 3 Domaines. He backed-up his Lyon breakaway ride with a strong showing on Mont Ventoux to finish 25th, and was unlucky to fall off the Yellow jersey group by a minute into Gap, but far from disgraced with a 35th place finish. He atoned with a top-10 finish in the mountain ITT, and stuck on well to finish in 14th place yesterday. Garmin have done well by getting a stage win with Dan Martin, and with little in the way of prizes on offer between here and Paris, another stage is a clear focus for them. In addition, I think he'll have been inspired by his American countryman's performance yesterday, and if he is feeling good, there's not much reason why he can't get in the breakaway, and more importantly, have the skill and talent to win. In the 100s, he is definitely worth some interest in the hope that he gets into the breakaway. The underated Spanish veteran, Daniel Navarro, has been ultra consistent in the Tour, let alone in the mountain stages. He has won a very tough one-day race this year, the Vuelta Ciclista a Murcia in February, from a quality field, and I've had him winning a stage in this Tour from the start, but just haven't been much convinced up till now. However, since he has been trying for breakaways, hasn't had much luck, and is running out of time to get a stage win for himself and his team, he is worth some interest at the excellent value of 200s. What really confirms my view that the Books have got this market wrong however, is that Purito went up as favourite. Since, he is most likely to win from a selection in the finale, that is to say he won't be permitted to ride away in an early breakaway because of his high GC position, his price should reflect the price of the GC contenders, and it doesn't really. It's therefore a default position, however at 8/1 the value is not there for a lay. Cheers, SP |

Hardly any mention of Froomes actions on the last climb. 20 sec penalty hardly sufficient for blatant cheating. well, I still don't know on behalf of which rule Froome was penalized, as it was only Porte who infringed a rule by taking an energy bar, it's not forbidden to take Food or drink from a team mate ![]() |

@SP
the scenario for a Purito win must be an attack on the last climb from the GC group maintaining his advantage going downhill solo |

"well, I still don't know on behalf of which rule Froome was penalized, as it was only Porte who infringed a rule by taking an energy bar, it's not forbidden to take Food or drink from a team mate" For me it was the equivalent of a "professional foul". Maybe not "Willie Young on Paul Allen"...but Froome was looking at a bonk...and took on food. We may never know how much time he could have lost without taking on some sugar. Maybe nothing...but maybe a spectacular 10 minute Landis-like collapse up to La Toussire in 06... We'll never know. [Un]Fair play to Sky for doing it..as he could have lost minutes..but it was cheating...and using Porte as the mule was very clever. |

@ bb66 -- I agree with that mate, but was it worth 6/1 favouritism for Purito, when Rolland was 25/1? SP.

Well I was wrong with Rolland not having the legs. Don't think he'll stay out until the end but this is mightily impressive.
