On paper it looks like Cavendish (Evs - Lads) should win and Wiggins (10/11 Boyles/SJ) should win.
Wiggins should only have to worry about Martin and Cancellara, although I'd have the prices for those two the other way round if Martin is fit.
Personally I would rather be on Cavendish of the two. The negatives for Cav are that the other teams will surely try and make GB do the bulk of the work, and Box Hill.
The positives are that he has trained for this race (including Box Hill), he has shown that if it does come to a bunch sprint he's in a class of his own, and possibly most importantly for me, he was badly stung by being the only cyclist in Beijing NOT to get a medal in the squad of 13. That burned, and he is fully focussed on Gold this time. Normally when Cav puts his mind to achieving something, he does.
So Cav for me, a big bet. I've also done a smaller double with Wiggo.

Cav @2.1 seems short to me. I'm not knocking him as I backed him (pre-race) in Stages 18 & 20 of TdF. To me, this isn't a guaranteed bunch sprint. Long race (260 km), small teams and difficult to control.

OK,now I understand that I would see naff al from Trafalgar Square as they're approaching the Mall from the other side
 So half way up a tree in Green Park should be able to see Wiggins leading Cav out for the sprint down Constitution Hill. |

Feels like a Ronde style last 50km finish..and if Boonen hadn't cracked a Polski rib I would be a lot more confident. Cav obviously the man to beat..and the Aussies & Germans will join up with the "Superheroes of Team GB" to make it a 15 man effort to close the breaks down...but everyone else has to try and use MSR tactics or they might as well not bother. Some rain might make it really interesting... Did my conkers laying Bettini 8 years ago in Athens...so should know better than to play an unknown event on an unknown course.... |

Good summary marychain. In Cav we trust. No way will the Aussies help chase a breakaway down. Remember the World champs when they arrived on the scene like thieves in the night. No surprise. Box Hill is not a problem for Cav, though obviously it puts uncertainty in the mind of bettors hence he is evens. Britain has the strongest team in the road race by far. The finish is flat. Do your nuts. I have.

impossible for 4 people to do all the work, Germany, Australia all have top sprinters but did nothing until it was too late. Everyone knew if it went to a sprint Cavendish would win so it was basically Team GB v everyone else and it was always possible that something like that could happen, have to feel for Cav but thats cycling.

Certainly did my nuts. Disappointed a drug cheat won. The coverage was terrible. Hardly any time gaps, useless commentator who couldn't get the nationalities right never mind the names. I like Tony Martin each way in the time trial now that the unfortunate Cancellara is out.

You're right about the coverage ..... after being spoilt with Tour de France coverage BBC was a joke. Didn't know gaps or distance left. I picked Uran out rather than Henao too!!

Was a shame but Team GB isn't Team Sky and no other team would help until far too late. The coverage was truly abysmal; couldn't blame the commentators; the lack of time checks and the useless choice of shots made their job very difficult. What was the point of slomo replays of someone cornering ffs? Just leave the camera there and we an work out the gaps ourselves. Hope the coverage of the time trial is better.

was strange from teams like Germany and Australia both of whom have strong sprinters but seemed to prefer GB not winning than giving themselves a chance of a medal. Unless they were too confident that the British riders would be able to do it all on their own. Big difference from the Tour where teams are 6 or 7 riders very hard to control such a talented field with just 4.

Germany tried but Tony Martin went early and picking Degenkolb was a strange one, Aussies didn't bother because they had O'Grady in lead group and he was a real Gold chance if they had a sprint.

Feel a bit for the British Team here. Even Germany didn't really commit which is a pretty disgraceful lack of faith in Greipel who had a good tour. He deserved a crack at a sprint. Sure, he might lose to Cav 4 times out of 5 but he'd have medalled easily. Sending one bloke up every so often was a poor show. Nobody has a divine right to get help from the peloton but one wonders what some of them were doing bothering. At least Belgium, Spain and Switzerland were having a crack trying to win the race. Not sure about some of the other teams.

Shocking TV coverage . Hugh Porter should be pensioned off so many mistakes its untrue.
Didnt spot it was Cancellara hitting the deck called Cavendish doing a turn on the front (as if?)when it was Stannard(whose 1/2 his size) Henao instead of Uran to name but 3 of a multitude. Ironically the sky lads where not up to the task yet Uran a mountain goat not good enough to get selected for the sky tour team gets a cracking 2nd. |

Uran will surely be in the Tour roster next year, and its likely he'll be in the Vuelta as well.
The worst mistakes Hugh Porter made were right at the end. When Kristoff won the sprint for bronze he said "Spain, or Holland get bronze. No its Denmark". I mean I didnt know it was Kristoff (I was hoping it was EBH) but I could tell it was a bloody Norway rider. Then the whole breakaway group crossed the line, meaning about 20 riders had got home, but he still called the sprint by the peloton a few seconds later "the race for 4th" about 3 times.  |
