Awesome javelin throwing, reminds me of the old Zelezny/Backley days. Can anyone improve again in the last round? The Russian leader was way behind the throwing line.

how to prevent Semenya in another title? Obviously with his testosteron level he only needs to train hard for 3 weeks to beat all female opposition, what a shame

Personally I think Porter is ok- she has one parent of each. I'm less convinced by 'naturalisation' in adulthood though. If you move somewhere when you're a kid fair enough, but the importation of Kenyans by oil rich middle Eastern states got silly a few years back!

I think Dix is a certainty for silver. If Lemaitre can't beat Dix over 100m, he can't over 200m. Dix's PB is half a second quicker. The guy from Panama is the danger.

An interesting bit of trivia is that not one womens WR in an established athletics event has been broken since 1990.
The new world marks in the 400mh, womens distance events (held by drug cheating Chinese athletes in the 1990s) pole vault and hammer are post 1990 events and the womens javelin marks have been reset with a new spec javelin

You are right Danno but of the top 50 in the marathon in the all time list only 2 of them were pre 1990. I'm not an expert on the history of the womens marathon but I don't think it was fully established by 1990, certainly it cant be compared to the 400m or 800m as examples. It maybe also that the drugs used at that time simply were not effective at extreme distances.
Compare that to the womens shot put where 26 of the top 30 in the all time list are pre 1990 athletes.

Clydebank - sorry, wasn't disagreeing with your overall point. Most of the pre-1990's women's records are laughable. Then there were the Chinese women of 1993 (Wang Yunxia holds the 10,000m world record and it is 30 seconds better than the next best - Radcliffe incidentally).
Flo-Jo's records for 100m & 200m should also be struck from the book. I simply can't believe that she came from nowhere, smashed those world records by so much, retired almost straight away, then died in her mid-thirties....and all that being above board.

Yeah, the whole Eastern Bloc phase is laughable. Systematic doping, planned an authorised by entire federations. Apparently quite a few of the athletes weren't actually aware they were doping, they were just told to "take these vitamins". If you see pics of the likes of Kratochvilova then it's so obvious as she's basically been turned into a man. Flo Jo was also off her face.
The Chinese group of "Ma's Army" was also ridiculous. They set stupid records, in championship races, behind closed doors (Chinese champs) all within a few days of each other and then they never ran anywhere close to their times again in global events... fishy? The IAAF really should abolish most of the women's records and start again as a lot of them are a joke.

Great last lap, thought Lagat had it 150metres to go as he looked like he was cruising around the outside but just seemed to take it too wide and lost too much ground.

I reckon I've got the solution to the problem of these False Starts in the Athletics. If you put Sir Ivor in charge, things will go like clockwork eh?

Not too bad thanks Donm maybe a short golfing holiday in Scotland before end of Sept.
Hoping that the GOAT will somehow deliver one more unlikely triumph in New York. I see that the G-COAT was reduced to posing in his underpants for money. Jesus H Christ, what sort of bloke does that? Certainly not Sir Ivor thank the lord. As you say, too busy training at high altitude in Mexico City ready for next year's Open.

Nice, highly unlikely unfortunately for the GOAT, not looking in great nick is the GCOAT but the draw will probably open up for him like last year where he barely had to lift a racket to walk to the title. Hopefully 2ndGCOAT (heard about this pod he lives in?) takes care of GCOAT if Murray doesn't

I think you will find that the Brit had his arms out of his lane. Plus the fact that the idiot went too early.
