Supply and demand.  How many people would've bought the PPV to see Toney?  How many people would have bought the PPV to see, say, Miller fight?

Also Toney didnt need to be payed that much,he wanted to fight and prove boxers are better than mma fighters,not gona chase dana around demanding to fight in the ufc and then when Dana agree's turns round and say's "im not fighting for that amount" he should have got the same as Randy at most,dont wana see that c0ck in ufc again,he had his chance and produced one of the most pathetic performances ive ever seen,i would have done just as good and i wouldnt have verbally submitted and then changed my mind when the ref didnt hear,pathetic.

one of the greatest lightweights to ever walk the planet got 150,000. Toney got 300,000 more.

next stop: small agressive appearance in a blockbuster film. the man's obviously a talented actor. he never gets his lines wrong, or he does and we just can't tell. he did convince enough people to buy PPV for him to earn half a million from what seemed like the sorriest attempt in a cage. Ever. Ankle hook was embarrassing. Toney couldn't touch his own toes.

What gets me is that these UFC fighters keep praising Toney for "being the first to step into the cage". Gentleman, I would happily get defaced by Jon Bones Jones' elbows, or stand infront of a Mirko CroCop kick (with his left I might get to walk again) for half the money Toney made. Praise Couture for being in a lose / lose situation. Why respect Boxers, when they have no decency to give it back? Is the UFC trying to win a medal of compassion?

Are you seriously suggesting the UFC just gave the money away?  Do you honestly think Toney did it just to show boxing was better than  MMA?  It's market forces dictating the pay and where someone fights.

Oh, and I'm sure Couture still gets a % of PPV so he would have been paid more than Toney.

i dont think Toney deserves more money than randy or bj penn,true legends in mma,thats my opinion and most people will tend to agree,if toney had come to me and said i want 500,000 which is double what anybody else on the card gets id have told him to fcuk off in no uncertain terms,a fat past it pathetic loud mouth getting taken down inside 10 seconds and pounded then choked out doesnt deserve to be paid that much. I would have done better myself,at least i would have tried to defend the arm triangle. Its a known fact that Toney chased dana around the country going to ufc events to demand a fight and asking him what he was afraid of,if he wanted it as bad as he said he does offer him the same as the others. Most mma fans would rather pay to watch something like randy vs cro cop go head to head than watch a fatty lie on his back and get smashed.

as a fight it wasn't value for money, but maybe dana thinks long term it will boost the sport, he can brag about toney getting took apart and he can try and goad other boxers into taking part.

no one knows how many people bought the ppv to see toney,not just me. Each to there own opinion and mine is that he shouldnt have been paid that much,why would we want to see other boxers come into the ufc? The same thing would happen, klitskchko vs brock,how long do you think that would last? Guarentee it wouldnt get past the 1st round. As i said id rather watch a good mma fight with mixed martial artists,much rather have seen Randy take on Cro cop.

I don't think the UFC are in the habit of throwing money away.  The added PPV buys, increased media attention and an MMA fighter dismantling a boxer probably means Toney wasn't paid nearly enough.

i didn't look it at from a strategical marketing point of view, i'm sure there's a higher purpose to it all, i just meant it can't possibly do much for the motivation of the lesser priviledged but talented fighters making

dana may have the immediate interest in increasing the popularity of mma through riding the whole "who's better, mma or boxing" saga, but truthfully, @mehmet j mook said we really don't want to encourage any of these boxers to make the crossover. Randy said himself, "i wanted to make a statement in there."

pay boxers less, don't make it as attractive. if he wanted the bout that badly, let him work for it. which he didn't come close to. didn't even look like he got up to much preparation for the fight. big country has a purpose for that belly of his. what was toney's excuse?

James Toney Says He’s Getting Ready To Defend His IBA Heavyweight Title In January, Also Says His MMA Days Are Not Over!

By James Slater - James “Lights Out” Toney has not been seen near a ring since his humbling August debut defeat in MMA. Stopped in the 1st-round by Randy Couture, Toney has given the odd interview since, but he has not kept what you could call a high profile. However, in a recent interview with The MMA Hour, the 42-year-old proved he has lost none of his bluster and ability to talk the talk.

Toney insisted the loss to “The Natural” was “a fluke,” and that “it will never happen again..”

Toney insists distractions he was bothered with when members of the IRS approached him shortly before the Couture fight played a big part in his loss. Toney, who told the MMA radio show that he “never received a penny” for the Couture fight because of the IRS’ actions, says he is now training for a Jan 27th defence of his IBA heavyweight title, but that after that he is “available” for an MMA fight with Quentin “Rampage” Jackson.

Jackson, the fighter-turned actor, has apparently said he will fight Toney in a boxing style, and that he will not look to score the quick takedown Couture did. Upon hearing this, the always quick-tongued Toney said Jackson “ wants to commit suicide.”

So, it seems, if a suitable MMA promoter can be found - one who is willing to risk putting on a mismatch the likes of which we saw in August in Boston - we will see Toney Vs. Jackson some time in 2011.

Toney’s boxing career appears pretty much close to finished, despite his claims that after his January fight (against an opponent he could not name on the radio show, due, he said, to all the pullouts guys who said they’d fight him have made) he will “look to unify the heavyweight titles.” And after he’s done with the Jan. 27th fight (no venue known at this stage either), Toney may look to prove a point in MMA.

“Lights Out” told the call-in show that he wants to make amends for what happened on August 28th, and that a fight with “Rampage” will do it. Toney also launched a tirade against WBA heavyweight champ David Haye (“David Gaye” as Toney refers to the Londoner), saying the Brit will lose as soon as he comes to the U.S and faces “a real fighter like myself.”

“I’ll try and unify the heavyweight title and then get back in the cage,” Toney said. “My goal is to become the greatest full-contact athlete ever. Period!”




It seems we have by no means seen the last of the former middleweight, super-middleweight and cruiserweight champion - in either the ring or in the cage. Whether or not this is good news is up to you!
