For exactly the same reason most French, German, Russian etc athletes are ecstatic at winning a medal.

2nd & 3rd secures there lotto funding for another season, another reprive from having to take a 9-5 job and also attempt to train.
No lotto funding buy buy to altitude training camps, and 24/7 medical support

Athletics is dead since after the doping brigade and will never recover. Flo Jo was just bootiful. Bit like snooker. I mean how many athletes can you name. In my day we used to worship some of 'em. Remember Lassie Virren? Bit contradictory but my hero.
