-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Imagine this. Anderson Silva, 10 and 0 since coming to the UFC, Middleweight King and Pound For Pound Champion, has actually never had a good preparation for any of his fights in the last 4 years. Sounds ludicrous. How can anyone be that good, rule a division with supreme authority and make former champions a weight-class above him look like amateurs, yet not be able to spar for longer than a week in training and struggle to lift weights because of serious issues with floating bone fragments in his right elbow? How would that be possible? Well, it is. That's what's been happening. After dismantling Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 in a fashion that belonged in a Hollywood film, the Spider finally had an operation to sort his elbow out. Now, Silva can prepare properly. Im both extremely excited at the prospect of Anderson possibly improving (and giving us more visually ridiculous feats) and terrified at what he might do to poor Demian Maia.

Maia is my second favourite middleweight (after A.Silva obviously). I love artists like him. Some of the submissions he pulls off are sensational and to a true MMA fan are as aesthetically pleasing as any Cro Cop head kick KO or Chuck Liddell overhand right. He won his first 5 UFC bouts via submission. His Jiu Jitsu is as good as it gets in MMA. He is a 2nd degree black belt in BJJ under Brazilian BJJ legend Fabio Gurgel. Demian showed his weakness when trying to stand with Nate Marquardt for 21 seconds. It was 21 seconds too long as he got KTFO. He is attempting to address his stand-up by training with Wanderlei Silva. He definitely showed improvement on his feet last time out when looking smoother against Dan Miller. However, Im not sure working with a brawler, an out and out warrior like the Axe Murderer, is such a smart idea. Imo, he should be working on being far more technical in his stand-up in order to draw opponents into his clinch/to get a takedown/to draw them into his guard. What Maia doesn't want is a war. Not against anyone, let alone Silva. Leben, Franklin (twice), Marquardt, Irvin and Griffin showed what happens when you go after Anderson. You get destroyed.

If Demian stands for a bit and/or can't take Silva down, he's getting KO'ed - there is simply no need to analyse that part of the fight. So the plan must be for Maia to get get Silva to the ground, preferably on his back. Maia's guard is awesome, but Silva is a lot less vulnerable in top position, despite his loss to a Triangle to Takase in Pride. Should Anderson find himself in Maia's guard, he'll just stand back up anyway. Silva has shown in the past that if he has one weakness, it's his wrestling. He lost a round (the only lost round in 10 fights) against Dan Henderson, a top wrestler who managed to take him down, get him on his back and keep him there. But Spider is a BJJ black belt himself and took no damage at all. For a short time against Lutter, the same thing occurred. So it can be done. However, three things should be pointed out. One, Silva, as mentioned above, will be better prepared for this bout than any other he's had in the UFC. Two, Lutter and Henderson in particular were a lot better on their feet than Maia is and made Silva think a bit regarding body kicks or power punches. And three, Maia utilises the clinch well to take the fight down to his world on the ground - Anderso Silva is a farking monster in the clinch. His Thai plum is the best in the business.

So unfortunately, it doesn't look too good for Maia. He'll get beat in the stand-up, get beat in the clinch and is unlikely to be able to take the fight to the ground. And even if Maia were to get Silva on his back, that's when the hard part begins. While his BJJ is better than Silva's, and Anderson's long limbs are perfect for a submission master like him, Spider is a legit black belt under the Nogueira brothers. There is a huge difference in being better than someone at Jiu-Jitsu and being so much better than them as to actually stop them. GSP and Hardy displayed that perfectly last week.

I'll go with a Silva TKO win in Round 2. 1/6 is value.

And I'm not worrying about this being a repeat of that brutal fight between Anderson and BJJ specialist Thales Leites at UFC 97. Maia is smarter than Leites so won't just lie down like a mug in the hope Silva will follow him, Maia is braver on his feet and will at least give it a go and Maia is simply a lot better than Leites.

I'll be back on with a bit on BJ/Edgar later in the week - needless to say I'll not be forecasting any surprises here. I've been saying since his destruction of Nightmare that he should now be back at 170lb and testing himself against a Fitch or an Alves, before coming in for the fight of his life for a third tilt at GSP. Who knows, with his improvement in conditioning HE could be the first UFC Champ to hold two belts simultaneously in two different weight classes, and not Anderson Silva.

Thinking about it, there is actually not a lot to say about that fight - BJ is superior in every facet of the game. 1/10 is fair enough.

A fight that simply shouldn't be happening in the UFC, or at all, is Hughes vs Renzo Gracie. One is a 37 year old has-been, and the other is a 43 year old never-was. Hughes should have went out on a high after beating Serra. Dana is showing him some loyalty by giving him a fight like this. He knows, Matt knows and we all know that if he was to go in against any top 10 welterweight, he'd get owned. So they give him Renzo, who has signed a 6 fight deal. That's right. A 6 fight deal. WTF. Anyway. At this stage of his career, he Hughes should not be 2/7 to beat anyone, but its a fight I'll be avoiding. Call be ageist and report me if you will, but these granda's should be at home with their pipe, slippers and viagra.

Incidentally, Gracie is the coach of Frankie Edgar. Not going to be a good night for Team Renzo methinks.

There's far better and more interesting fights that the one above, and I'll go into them in the coming days. This is a super card bar Matt/Renzo and the next few months are going to be immense in MMA.

Beats the hell out of Hopkins and Jones boring us all to tears anyway!

Round 2: Maia jabs and Silva evades. Silva hunting Maia down. Silva lands a right. A leg kick trips Maia down. Silva is just embarrassing Maia. Silva is dancing and taunting. This is the most showboating in all his fights combined. Maia shoots and pulls guard. Maia shoots again and misses. Silva mocks run and the crowd laughs. Maia jumps at him. Silva taunts Maia to ask him to stand and trade or perhaps shoot. Silva taunting more than striking. Silva lands a kick and points and laugh. Maia misses a shot and Silva with more taunting. Silva lands a leg kick. He lands another. And a jab.

CHECK IT OUT

[i]UFC President, Dana White showed his disgust and frustration at middleweight champion, Anderson Silva at the end of the fourth round of the Brazilians UFC 112 fight with Demain Maia, throwing the Brazilians belt to the ground and storming off to the backstage area.

Dana was involved in an altercation with Silvas manager, Ed Soares at the twenty minute mark of the fight who was sat octagon side. After a shouting match between the two, the head of the promotion stormed off, leaving the champions belt on the ground.

Unfortunately the UFC 112 post fight press conference will not be aired live but there will be a recording of it available later on MMABay. Keep it right here to see what Dana has to say about

Report baxter152 April 10, 2010 10:14 PM BST
Ariel Helwani (arielhelwani) on Twitter

Taken from helwani's twitter, which he is updating with what is going on at the press conference right now.

Dana seems real upset.

"To end it the way that we did was an embarrasment for me, the ufc, the fertittas, the ufc"

"I will, I dont know how yet, but I will make this up to the fans"

"iF YOU'RE that talented, be mike tyson. go in there and finish"

"this one took the cake" - when asked if this was more embarrassing than 97

" I don't want to see GSP vs. Silva after tonight. Silva might be the first champion fighting on a prelim. I don't want to see that sh*t"

" I wouldnt come here if I was (anderson)"

"For something like this happen, I honestly ... I apologize and I'm embarrassed"

Dana says the Vitor fight would have been more challenging. Thinks Maia might have broken his nose.
Report comeonkautostar April 10, 2010 10:14 PM BST

Disgusting from silva, could so so easily have beaten maia in the 2nd maybe 1st round but instead acted like a c0ck,was up there with kenflo as my fave fighter but lost a lot of respect for him last night.

Silva was a joke last night, so disrespectful. Really hope someone can beat him after that performance, Maia will be hurt more than getting ko'd, just humiliating to watch.

Pleased for Edgar, a rematch will be on the cards though, gives hope to a lot of fighters what he did last night and i hope he can replicate it.

Think UFC owes Abu Dhabi a fantastic card after last nights debacle, credit to Munoz/Grove, cracking fight.
Report comeonkautostar April 11, 2010 11:32 PM BST
In all honesty, the UFC always put on fantastic cards when going in to a new market. Last night was no different, it was a very good card.

They had two titles on the line, the best fighter in the world, the best lightweight in history, a future UFC hall of famer and two rising stars in Davis and Munoz.

Davis was good and Munoz/Grove was very good.

It was the main three fights that let the whole show down.

Hughes and Gracie should not be fighting. Said it before, during and after. If they need to still compete, Hughes should go back to amateur wrestling and Gracie should go back to submission wrestling. Dana complains that Gracie looked his age in the Octagon. THEN WTF ARE YOU DOING GIVING HIM A 6 FIGHT CONTRACT? Hughes will get owned by a top 10 welter, as i said before, and his inability to finish for so long (totally opposite to Silva) was dreadful, so expect him to fight more bums like this as Dana staying local to a former stalwart.

It says a whole lot about the third fight and the main event that they made BJ/Edgar look good. Fair play to Frankie, he had a good game plan in hitting and moving, but BJ (a) played right into his hands by not trying to take him down and test his BJJ, (b) was clearly hurt coming into the fight and produced his worst performance in over 8 years, and (c) won the fight anyway, despite appearances.

What can you say about Silva/Maia? :-(

However, there are three parties to blame here.

First of all, Silva. I am a huge fan but he behaved like a moron. He says he was disrespected and wanted to punish Maia and make him feel frightened for every minute of the fight. Well, he punished him through humiliation and he did indeed make Maia feel scared. Was he disrespected? Depends on his culture. I know Brazilians take their BJJ very seriously and Maia implied that as soon as he got a hold of Anderson, it was over. But what was he supposed to say? 'I know that even though im top 5 in the world Anderson is so good I haven't got a chance anyway?' That would sell the fight. And so what if he was disrespected anyway? The way BJ/GSP reacted after their war of words at UFC 94 is how it should, and usually, is done. But there was no war of words. Even if there was, he was in the wrong. Another excuse put forward was that he was tired. I am not buying it. Maybe in the last two rounds when he failed to engage, but his showbating bullsh1t had started before then. Another excuse, which isn't bullsh1t and isn't his fault so much, is his style. He has and always will be a counter striker and to put on a show he needs his opponents to be aggressive. Just as GSP will now always be a wrestler and GnP artist, so Silva will always be a counter striker. I don't hold it against either of them. The difference is that GSP's style depends on him and will always be 'boring,' whereas Silva's style depends on his opponent and will always be spectacular if (but its a big if) it comes off. What ever the excuse, Anderson was out of line and should have been punished with a fine.

On a side not, I wish people would stop referring to Silva vs Cote as being in the same shocking league as Silva vs Leites and Silva vs Maia. UFC 90 was an ok fight and nowhere near as bad as the other two. Nowhere near.

All genius's are flawed. That's why I'll remain a fan. I'll explain why below. But he needs to get his arse in gear and give us something special next time. My only worry is the opponent. That takes me on to party number two.

The UFC - Dana and Joe Silva. Have you noticed Silva has only been a total dick twice? Against BJJ specialists (Leites and Maia) that are defensive in their stand up and who are really undeserving of being in their with him. It is partly Silva's fault again, I admit, because it is unprofessional and its his attitude - he is basically saying to White that 'if you put me in fights with guys undeserving of a fight with me, I will humiliate them and thus humiliate you.' BUT, he has been on the record a few times now saying he doesn't care what weight he fights in, as long as they are in superfights, be it against GSP, Shogun or Lesnar, as he only has a few years left at the top. Evidently, given the total lack of respect he gave to Maia, he never considered it a big enough fight. So why, if you are Dana and Joe, risk this sort of response from Anderson and allow your company and the sport to be embarrassed like that? Ffs put him in their with GSP, or Rampage, or Jones or Carwin or someone who will come forward and make things harder for him. He's said it himself, he just wants to be tested. SO TEST HIM.

Thirdly, again, as much as I like him, Maia is partly to blame. A bit like Hardy, he offered very little offence in his once in a lifetime shot at being champion of the world. The last round he came off with a bit of a flurry, but he's been given the chance of a lifetime and he didn't do too much to win the fight. I know what you don't do is attack/rush Silva because you'll end up in a heap on the canvas, but you cannot do what he did, ie.e avoid the standup a lot and very rarely shoot for a takedown. He was beaten 61 strikes to 20 in the fight and that was with Anderson doing sweet FA for the last 10 minutes.

As I said last night, although I like Machida, I really want to see Shogun take Dragon's belt and Silva given a title shot. Shogun is smart and always attacking. He'll rough Silva up and always comes in with a good gameplan. Unfortunately, I think Shogun may have missed his chance last time and Machida has seen what is effective against him now and will come up with something different. That's next, at UFC 113, in a months time.

BJ did not win that fight. Frankie took him down, was more agressive and did more damage with his punches. BJ is the better fighter and will surely be back but in no way did he beat Frankie at 112.

Well done Frankie.

Points decisions are awarder on Effective Striking, Grappling, Aggression and Octagon Control.

BJ won the striking, as shown above.

There was no grappling.

BJ won Octagon control, as he took the centre and only stayed still or came forward whereas Frankie came in and out a lot and moved from side to side and backwards.

Agression. Frankie won as he was busier. But personally, I'd rather land more strikes than be more aggressive.

The 'two' takedowns are worth nothing. The first one BJ was down for about half a second and immediately got back up. He was not held down or controlled in any way shape or form. The second takedown was for a few more seconds and BJ pulled guard, but Edgar done zilch and BJ again stood back up easily.

Frankie won that fight, how anyone can say otherwise is beyond me. One judge even had all 5 rounds for frankie. Bj didnt look himself and trotted around the octagon, alot of the time trying to counter the more agressive Edgar who's gameplan was superb in using his superior speed and good boxing, would hardly say that was octagon control. BJ's face was banged up so id say Frankie's striking was more effective even though NEITHER looked like getting knocked out. Take downs score points as ive seen to my dismay a few times and frankie took bj down where as BJ didnt try to take him down once,Frankie was far more agressive. The UFC judges and millions around the world would agree that Frankie won the fight.

Frankie Edgar the UFC lightweight champion.

I've just rewatched the Silva v Maia fight. It was quite frustrating but don't think it was quite as bad as the Leites fight, at least Maia came forward a fair amount but Silva was running away for virtually all of the last two rounds.

I agree Silva is mainly to blame and that the UFC shouldn't have put Maia in with him. Someone with next to no stand up has no chance against him. And I also agree that the Cote fight should not be mentioned alongside Leites and Maia, Cote was bringing the fight to Silva and only his cruciate going prevented it from being a decent fight.

However, I don't blame the UFC for not giving him the super fights he supposedly wants. If he wants to vacate his belt and fight in other divisions then that's fine but why hasn't he done so? I'm sure the UFC would love him to move up or down as they know full well they have nobody at middleweight who could challenge him whilst the Welterweight and Light Heavyweight divisions contain much greater challenges.

Anderson should vacate his belt and then either move down and fight GSP or move up to LHW. His last five opponents (Maia, Griffin, Leites, Cote, and Irvin) have been bordering on the embarrassing considering he's one of the top three fighters in the world. He fought Henderson, Marquardt and Franklin before that, a much more impressive list of contenders. There's Sonnen, Belfort, W Silva and Marquardt left at MW in the UFC and whilst Belfort and W Silva would be more entertaining than Maia/Leites, I'd want to see them both within 6-8 months and then, assuming he wins, for Silva to move up/down. Saturday was just his third defence in over 2 years and he needs to step up the frequency of his defences, should he stay at MW.

I am looking forward to seeing what the UFC do with him, I don't think they should punish him but try and figure out what it is he really wants (suggestions range from these super fights to just wanting to see out his contract whilst not doing himself any damage).

BJ has said on his website via his video blogs that the UFC contacted him yesterday trying to setup a rematch between him and Edgar.
