When the going gets tough, the Ravens get going. It's business end of the season and once again the Ravens are making their move.
This game is massive for both teams. With both Chicago and Green Bay recording road wins, Detroit know they can't afford any more fcuk ups. Likewise for the Ravens with Miami winning to move into the last wildcard place. But the Ravens got a boost with Cincinnati losing in Pittsburgh. The Ravens know if they win out they win the division. But with the Lions tonight, Patriots next week and the Bengals to finish with, that is going to be an almighty task.
There is no doubt Detroit have enormous scoring potential and I'm a huge fan of their offense. I like Stafford a lot. Megatron is a legend. Reggie Bush is explosive. Pettigrew and Burleston are also excellent. They can score in so many ways. But they are a turnover machine. 10 recently. And a defense like the Ravens will pounce on any mistakes from the Lions.
There aren't many more healthier teams in week 15 than the Ravens. Injury hit for most of the season they are getting better all the time as players return. It's absolutely massive that Dennis Pitta is back for the Ravens offense. He gives them so much and is a huge threat in the red zone.
The Lions secondary is awful. And the Ravens are very good going deep. Not many QBs can throw a better deep ball than Flacco. If the Ravens can run the ball - they showed last week against the Vikings that their running game is coming to life - then that will keep the excellent front four of the Lions honest and allow Flacco to target his men deep.
I can see this being a bit of a shoot out. Although the Ravens are 1-5 on the road, apart from the blowout on opening day in Denver, they have lost very narrowly on all occasions. Plus they did win in Denver and New England in the play offs last season. Also they are gutsy, tough and brave. They just wouldn't let the Vikings beat them last week and kept fighting back before eventually grabbing a dramatic victory. Can the Lions out-guts the Ravens? No chance. There only chance is to blow the Ravens away and I just can't see that happening.
BIG BET ON THE BALTIMORE RAVENS +6.5 at 4-5

Money for Balti, line has moved in elsewhere. Now 3.0 on here (M/L) it was 3.2 this afternoon.

If I was getting involved in the game I would have to take the ravens with the start, detroit always find a way of messing things up.

Clay, when the regular season is over and before the play-offs begin - we need to talkCool.

You told me that the bets you put-up and that I record are the bets you actually place (perhaps different amounts, I hope they are less), indeed you were quite indignant that I even asked.

I did a quick check, not certain but I think you are close to 50% for your spread bet picks - well, there's a surpriseShocked...and at the standard 10/11 price, guess what you are representative of the whole market.

If I recorded your NFL spread bets for the next 20 years, I'm pretty sure you will win about 50%, unfortunately at 10/11 - so I don't know why you bother. I'm being critical here admittedly, but hopefully not overly critical but there is a sufficient volume of bets now to confirm a trend practically anyone could have predicted week 1.

Its real money involved (or so you say).....so you should deal with the criticism as my motives are in no way malicious - quite happy for regular NFL forumites on here to make money - we should learn from each other; and as the years go on, we should all be sharpening and improving our game each season. To be blunt, you may as well be tossing a coin.

Happy to hear if you disagree.

I actually agree on a point Clay seems to be making. One team is battle hardened, and has been there and done it many times - as in regular PS appearances, and actually winning the SB. The other is well-known for messing things up and hasn't made the post-season for years, they've had the div handed to them and haven't taken advantage with Rodgers out. The Ravens are a team who play the Steelers twice a season, although GB at their best have been an elite team for years, I don't think playing them twice a year is quite the same thing as the Ravens having 2 huge slug fests for nearly a decade with Pittsburgh.

GB are a finesse team really, they carve you up with the passing game, with the Steelers you have to stand toe to toe for 4 quarters even in today's pansy NFL.

Whatever Detroit throws at the Ravens physically, it won't intimidate them, but I think the Lions could crumble a bit if Balti plays real physical.

This game to me is like asking Bengals @ home to NE, it's a playoff game (which this is almost for both teams), who do you like? I know where my money would be.

Detroit might win and they might cover, but I prefer Balti + 6.5 and @ 2/1 in a toss up kinda game, although Detroit of course have home field advantage.

I disagree. To say he should just flip a coin is a bit harsh and unfair. He has an opinion, states his reasons for his picks and bets accordingly. His facts and judgement may be questionable at times, but he is a NFL enthusiast and obviously enjoys a punt. If he can bet on all these games and take only a 5% loss on the season, then he is doing ok imo for all the fun he obviously gets.

Lay of Ravens for me. Excited

This ref is a massive homer - 73% or so home team calls compared to a 56% average with the other zebras in the league for home teams (I'm pretty sure they are the figures, or v close to it). Plus Baltimore are 0-8 on the road v NFC North teams since returning to the NFL. Thought I'd put those stats out there.
Saying that, I still fancy Baltimore big time

On face value the edge to Lions, megatron and the potent offense, playing at home gives the edge, but Ravens resilience and better coaching, plus the Lions capacity for messing-up brings it back to a 50-50 type game...very much on the night.

So, Lions at 1.5 seems very low to me.

Satisfactory 1st half. Detroit making plenty of mistakes already, penalties and dropped passes all over the place.

Lions will get this. Balti offense after looking ok for a couple of drives has nothing now. They need to get back in the 2 minute offense and take some shots downfield. Where is Torry Smith?
