I was thinking a lot about this and what I came up with is that collage sports prived the grass roots community aspect as well as being a pathway for yong athleats the second divisions and state leages provide in Austalia, UK, Europe as those are not present in US pro sports. Full version.

There are many cities in the US with big populations that don't have pro teams so the fans there have no choice, but even in places that do have pro teams college sports is still massive. It is very different alright. Sports mad country, all the pro leagues have franchises, not clubs, the colleges are more like clubs perhaps this is a reason, that they feel like the college is really 'their' team.

Not forgetting high school as well.  Attendances in the thousands for school football games are commonplace.

well the "schools" are more important than anywhere else. people retain an allegiance to their school all their life. so they then support their school sports team. in britain nobody really gives a toss what uni they went to. not unless youre an oxford or cambridge luvvy.

and obviously a lot of sports people over here dont even go to uni. its not an established route into professional sport.
