I presume you are talking about the fake FG. I think it was a good call that just went wrong. Good chance of a 1st down and even if you don't get it you pin the Steelers inside the 5 (or close to it anyway). Just cos it didn't work out doesn't mean it was a bad call.

I strongly disagree. They got off to a bad start 14-0 down, they play well, get back into the match and take control. Steelers are rattled and struggling big time. Chip shot to go 7pts up making Pittsburgh have to score twice in 4th qt to beat you. They go for a trick play, meaning if they get it, the scenario is exactly the same, changes nothing, Steelers still need only 2 scores to win. However, if it doesn`t work out, it`s a huge momentum swinger (like it proved) and a TD wins it for Pittsburgh, let alone tie the match. From the strong position they were in, no other coach in the NFL would have made a such a dumb call. Cost them the match, cost them 1st place in their division and will probably cost them a play-off spot. As I said earlier - WHAT A MUG.

and his reaction even more laughable mac. said he wasn't going to be accused of being scared of not going for it! it's not the first time he's demonstrated his mugness

yes, Schwartz..........ok we agree "you are not scared"........(but we also agree you are a bonehead).
Daft......he really needs to sort them out discipline-wise....they are contenders of sorts, but are probably one of the dumbest. Reflects the coach, needs fixing...less silly calls, posturing, posing and late hits, killing them |

I still think he was right to go for it but he should have used Stafford, Megatron, & Bush to do so instead of his punter. Using the punter was a mistake. I disagree with your point about it being exactly the same scenario whether they kick the FG or go in for the TD. It is not the same scenario, not by a long shot. There is a huge difference between needing a TD to tie and needing 2 scores to go ahead. |

I think it was the right call as well. Typically with these decisions he is a genius if they make the first down, and an idiot if they don't. Truthfully of course these decisions are often marginal one way or the other, without the benefit of knowing the result.
db1974 is right in saying that the difference between 7pts down and 11pts down is quite a lot. To say it's the same because the Steelers need 2 TDs to win either way, is just wrong. In fact there probably isn't a lot of difference between taking the field goal and being 7pts up, versus 4pts up and having them pinned on their own 3 yard line. You've got a great chance of a 3 & out and a first down in Pittsburgh territory; in fact they had them 3rd & 9 but Roethlisberger converted. |

It was a chip-shot field goal and practically a guaranteed 7 point lead
- There was still most of 4th quarter to go so an 11 point lead wasn't even close to guaranteeing a win anyway - Looking for first down you give it to a rookie punter?!! Surely they had better means of getting the first down - Apart from the risk of not getting it, there is the risk of giving Steelers momentum (which it did) Even allowing for all of that, I still wouldn't hang him for making the call- there was some logic to it after all - its the "we are not scared", what is he raving about?! (I'm beginning think he was actually "scared" (why mention it at all)....scared they couldn't hang on an 7point lead) |
