I could not believe the surprise from the NFL that Mathieu looks to be good enough for NFL Laugh

Anyone who has watched a bit of college football (whcih NFL guys obv don't) over the past few years will have seen how dominant and exciting the star formerly known as the honey badger was.  I could not believe he wasn't drafted in the first round.  This guy will terrify Offenses all his career.

It will prove again how NFL analyses things that don't happen on the field too much.  Another case in point is Dez Bryant.

Can you take the gamble of drafting a player like him in the first round though d13phe with all the financial implications involved amongst other things, a player who has failed MULTIPLE drug tests as well other misdemeanours....obviously all NFL teams didn't think he was worth the risk.

As a GM you're putting your franchise and your own personal employment at risk by drafting college players like him.

If i was a GM i wouldn't even contemplate taking someone like that in the first unless he was a possible franchise QB and i didn't have one.

I suppose that is how the draft system works.

Either way the Cardinals have got an abolsute steal.

Yeah...a gamble that has paid off......at least for the time being cos we don't know for sure until his first contract plays out.

Besides the 10 drug tests he failed he was also considered undersized for his position. You can understand how he dropped because of the character concerns but I often feel that too much emphasis is put on prototype size for positions (see Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, Steve Smith etc). The guy just has football instincts and gets around the ball.

Wasn't that much of a gamble by the Cardinals. £3m over 4 years is nothing in the grand scheme of things. Most of the contract is based on staying out of trouble as well from what I can gather. If he wasn't such an idiot off the field he'd be making serious money.

One things for sure, the Cardinals Special Teams will be awesome with Mathieu and Partrick Peterson returning kickoffs and punts.

exactly right nayim (regarding position)

so many players drafted on size and fundamentals rather than ability.

We see it every year.

Anyway, Matthieu in the defense gives the Cards the ability to play Peterson in the offense Shocked

Having only really got into Callidge bawl and its impact on the draft during the last two years or so,  I've often been surprised by how players who are huge stars at NCAAF level can fall from favour so fast in the pecking order for the draft.  Not to mention several players shortlisted for the Heismann who weren't even drafted (apparently they weren't 'built' for the pro game ?)
Amazing how guys who have first round talent one year can lose the plot and end up undrafted 16 months later ... Vonaze Burfict and Mathieu will still make it but they've basically burnt a winning lotto ticket and had to start again from the bottom.
