i can't remember if you're a barrister or solicitor, but i do remember you're of a legal background. a question, if i may?
some of the racist remarks i see on chitchat really are quite appalling. do you think there would be grounds for a prosecution under the public order act 1986 part 3 section 18? i seem to recall it is worded quite broadly "(b) having regard to all the circumstances racial hatred is likely to be stirred up thereby."

An individual poster may be breaking the law as you suggest, and although prosecutions under the Act for hate crimes on the internet are very rare, it has happened, and prison sentences have been handed down for the specific offence you mention.
Chit Chat has always suffered from racist material, but it also used to be good for some craic too. These days however, more and more racist nutters seem to gravitate to the place and it's floating at the top of the bowl. That's why this forum is so valuable!  |

thanks for the reply. if i didn't have better things to do i might bring a private prosecution out of ennui. but it's what has moulded the individuals who express such views which is what really needs to be addressed.
