By NFC West standards the Niners have found some form in recent weeks and remarkably are just one game off top spot, but in the six games they played againt sides with a .500 or better record they're 0-6, they're also 1-5 on the road with their sol win coming at teh woeful Cards. If Chargers put in a complete performance like the one last Sunday against the Chiefs they'll surely win this and cover the line of 9. Short weeks throw up some strange results but I think Norvs men know they're playing play off football a month early than most, any defeat over the next 3 weeks and their play off hope all but disappear. I'll take the Chargers to cover in this and with perfect CF weather forecast the over 44 could be value as well. GL all
1) Joe Staley the 49ers starting LT is out, bad news as the Chargers have the 2nd most sacks for the year (38) Chargers also rank 1st against the pass.
2) With Gore out the 49ers will struggle to get the run going, Chargers rank 5th against the run.
3) Vincent Jackson made a huge difference on Sunday stretching the field and being double teamed on occasions, Gates may play which would further expose a poor 49ers secondary, especially with the Chargers power running game setting up play action.
4) Its Philip Rivers and the Chargers in December where they have been so dominant in recent years. ( Raiders loss 2 weeks ago an anomaly)
5)Not a long journey, but short weeks always favour the home side.
I predict something like 31 - 17 to the Chargers.

BIG bet for me on SD Chargers on match market @ 1.27 on Bet Daq
beats the 1.24 and higher commission on here

What is it about Norv and January? I'd be very nervous about backing San Diego for the big gig, especially with their potential to implode on special teams.
I'd be quite keen on the Giants' but for all their injury woes in the receiving corps. As it is, I've invested in the Ravens, Pats and Saints.
N.O. seem to have an upgraded ground game and the 'D' again looks capable of overcoming its shortcomings by landing a couple of turnovers.
The result failed to show it, but the Ravens looked superior to the Steelers when they clashed recently.
Mind you, I sometimes think Troy could win a game by himself!

^^Giants are getting their receivers back gradually..dont think its a bad option taking the giants...Not sure the ravens were superior, yes they blew it by going against what was winning them the game..punting the ball deep and making the stop,it became a battle of field position with the ravens having a superb punter and kick off specialist, overall i thought the steelers had the better balance through the game.TROY was the turning point with that big turnover.

As they began preparations today for their showdown Sunday with the Philadelphia Eagles, the Giants released some sobering news: Steve Smith will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury suffered Monday night in the victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Detroit.

Manwithnoname - I agree re superbowl, Chargers could win out and still not make post season , but as far as tonights match up goes I can see nothing but a comprehensive Chargers win. Nuggest makes a good point re the Niners running game, strange that since Gore got crook they've won games (albeit against poor oppo) but Westbrook is not Gore and the Chargers front line will shut Westbrook out all day, so Smith has to go through the air against the #1 ranked pass defence. Niners like every other team can only beat the Chargers on special teams and sadly for Norv their ST has been worse than woeful this year, a half acceptable ST performance tonight and they win by 2 scores IMO.

Gore went down early in the win over the Cards, Davis caught 2 passes in that game but the Niners were in control and it was Westbrook who did the damage on the ground. Since: v Packers 4 catches for 126 v Seahawks 5 catches for 70
Season 49 catches 744 yards

Fascinating game which San Diego should win easy, but then there's a lot of things San Diego 'should do' Chargers are one of the big teams you can rarely back with the confidence, which you should have with a short priced favourite. Niners haven't anything to lose with a quarterback fighting to save his NFL career. As a Chiefs backer in the AFC West, I hope San Fran can pull this one off but I think my fate will be known by the end of the first quarter.

Got some -9 Chargers and also bought some TD shirts @ 260. Rivers has about 8 targets to go to many of them wearing 80+, I expect Niners to be chasing the game and whilst Crabtree is a low number (15) he does have Davis (85) and Morgan (84). If the Niners stay close it's got the potential to be a shoot out. Played fixed overs 44. GL all

Chargers need to make more use of Jackson this week.
Hopefully he's in the groove after blowing the cobwebs away last week.
