I got 44.
The 6 I didn't get were Vermont, Louisiana, West Virginia, Kansas(I try to forget they exist because of the evolution thing), Indiana(!!!) and Kentucky.
In my defence, I spent 4 minutes trying to spell Massachusetts and then 4 more thinking "What the ** was New Orleans' state, ffs, of course I know it damn it etc...".
Would have gotten 48, had no clue West Virginia is a separate state and well, Vermont, sorry but there isn't anything in Vermont.

You got 42 out of 50 U.S. States :(

Should have been 43 but I spent too long trying to spell Massachusetts and Connecticut(which I never got )

Counties are a bit different to States though aren't they? How many counties could you name from, say, France?

None, I have no interest in French football- I thought this was about because we like American sport?

yet but counties are far less influential than states they have no legislative power and have little meaning in day to day English life. We also tend not to refer to places in that way 'Detroit, Michigan or Houston,Texas.' You don't hear 'Birmingham, Warwickshire' or 'Wigan, Lancashire' quite so often.

Of course they could. I did it to satisfy my own curiousity. It doesn't really matter whether anyone thinks I did it or not.

fwiw, in case people hadn't realised, that link i gave allows you to test yourself.

The link makes it easier on balance - you can't miss any out (although you might mix a couple up I suppose). Would think that plenty get Vermont and New Hampshire the wrong way around, and maybe New Mexico and Arizona.
