In case you haven't been paying attention, here are the details you need to know: The competition committee came up with a proposal to change the rules of overtime in the playoffs. The proposal says that if Team A wins the coin toss and scores a touchdown on their opening possession, than the game is over and they win. But if Team A wins the coin toss and kicks a field goal on it's opening possession, then Team B gets the ball and a chance to score. If Team B then scores a touchdown, they would win. If Team B kicks a field goal to tie, then the game continues normally and goes straight into sudden-death format. In short, no team would ever be able to win the coin toss, get the ball and kick a field goal for the win, just as the Saints did in the NFC Championship game against the Vikings.

Yes, it might be unfair --- Lose the Toss & Lose the game.

BUT !
If you Attack & play to WIN in Regular time this could avoid being in such a position.

Will it affect the prize of beer?

No that prize will now be a mightier hangover come morning.
Report Jollop March 24, 2010 9:55 AM GMT
you can now win the game with two points (safety) but not with three.

I quite liked the idea that the team willing to start deepest in their own territory got the ball, would have made it very interesting who would be happy to start inside their own 10 or even 5!
Report Jollop March 24, 2010 11:01 AM GMT
thinking about it, handicap in-play in ot will be a minefield, teams can now win

3-0 6-3 6-0 2-0 5-3 5-0 9-3 & 9-0 !!

so even if you are on +8.5 you are not safe.

Theres a good chance they could bring this in for the regular season as well which would be great.

no, then what do we care
Report King John Part March 24, 2010 1:19 PM GMT
it might affect the price of cider though

In my opinion it would be easier just to say the first team to score 6 points or is leading at the end of OT wins.

isn't that what they have done?
Report jacob_TA March 24, 2010 3:09 PM GMT
If team A score a FG after winning the toss, team B get the ball but turn over on 4 downs or miss FG - then team A wins, without scoring 6 points in OT

made it overly complicated imo.

just say both teams are guaranteed 1 offensive posession.

any change is improvement...but should be bought into regular season also...

cant agree with rule changes in post season only....nonsense

Bidding yards is the most innovative and equitable solution, imo - the same has been suggested in other toss-dependent sports such as cricket (bid runs). Though what would happen if both sides were happy to start at their own 1?
Report bushy March 24, 2010 5:54 PM GMT
Alternatively you could just play sudden death - next TD wins - no FGs allowed and with a safety being converted into a turnover with 1st and goal at the 1. There'd still be an advantage to the toss but the excitement would be excellent esp. with lots of going for it on 4th down.

discussions with regard to introducing this rule for the regular season will take place in May,it is likely to be given the green light
