the onside kick wasnt the worse decision in the game, it gave them two chances to get the ball back and they nearly pulled it off. but norv's playcalling during the game was awful like persistingly running sproles up the middle for 2 yds.

Sproles wasn't the issue, he only had 3 rushes and they were for 33 yards.
As usual, Norv played the game far too cagey and most of his decisions were poor or just plain chickeny.
In the first-half when he ordered a punt on 4th and 4 from the Jets 36, I knew he was going to have another one of those games that he always seems to have in the playoffs. Later he punted on 4th and inches from midfield. Later he took the field-goal on 4th and 2 from the Jets 22, when down by 10 with 4 minutes left. So the best he could hope for was overtime really. I know a lot of coaches might have made the same decisions as above, especially the last one, but Norv just doesn't ever seem to get it right. Tomlinson is very obviously washed up but Norv insisted on making him a large part of the game plan. LDT was great, he isn't now, he's lost a step and his carries and Sproles' carries should have been swapped. The onside kick was just plain stupid. When he finally does take a risk, it's one he has little chance of succeeding at and it made little sense. Do we think the Jets would have gone for it on 4th and 1 from their own 28 yard-line? What % chance of recovering an onside kick? About 20% of them are recovered, but those stats boosted quite a bit by successful unexpected onside kicks and the Jets were well prepared for this one. So maybe somewhere between 10 and 15% chance of success. If you need 7 to tie, then maybe the clock is more of a factor so you need the ball back right away, but plenty of time to kick it away, stop them, and then get into field goal range (for the metronomic Kaeding ;-))
Bill Simmons made a good call, fake the onside kick, that brings on the 'hands' team for the Jets, and then kick it deep and good chance of nailing the returner at the 10-15 yard line because Jets would have no blockers on the field.

Sorry not sproles, perhaps it was LT they kept running up the middle for minimal gain usually on 2nd and long. Maybe they didnt trust Kaeding to kick the fieldgoal to tie the game, so had to get the ball back straightaway with enough time for Rivers to get the touchdown and win the game. Wasnt it the punter who kicked the onside kick?
