Good man RA - Bringing a bit of culture to the forum.
September 1913, by William Butler ****
What need you, being come to sense, But fumble in a greasy till And add the halfpence to the pence And prayer to shivering prayer, until You have dried the marrow from the bone; For men were born to pray and save: Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone, It’s with O’Leary in the grave.
Yet they were of a different kind, The names that stilled your childish play, They have gone about the world like wind, But little time had they to pray For whom the hangman’s rope was spun, And what, God help us, could they save? Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone, It’s with O’Leary in the grave.
Was it for this the wild geese spread The grey wing upon every tide; For this that all that blood was shed, For this Edward Fitzgerald died, And Robert Emmet and Wolfe Tone, All that delirium of the brave? Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone, It’s with O’Leary in the grave.
Yet could we turn the years again, And call those exiles as they were In all their loneliness and pain, You’d cry, ‘Some woman’s yellow hair Has maddened every mother’s son’: They weighed so lightly what they gave. But let them be, they’re dead and gone, They’re with O’Leary in the grave.

Never knew the reason why Punch. If it's some form of swear word or insult then I for one have never heard it. And I love a good swear. Let's not forget it took BF years to change the clock on the forum to the right time, so we are not dealing with Mensa members.

There was a period a few years ago where a lot of forum posters either got banned or were denied access to posting on the site in general. New account openers were denied access to the forum so it all went very quiet all over but the irish forum was the hardest hit as there was a lot of internal fighting between a handful of posters that destroyed it for the majority .
I tried for a while after to keep it moving but got very little responses to anything posted so eventually gave up myself . It's a pity as it was the best forum on here for a long time.

The start of the rot was a few years back when a very informative regular preview thread on Irish Racing days posted by Stamford Bridge (IIRC) was slated by a few posters for tipping up short priced horses,it was a pity because there was a lot of info contained in his stuff and you could just ignore his tips if that was what you wanted.
Then there was the hassling and chasing off of Wildmanfromborneo who was/is an elderly man who contributed a lot of conversation generating material.

Yes punchestown Wildman was brilliant on here. He was the biggest loss to this forum alright.
He was a fantastic debater and certainly knew what he was talking about when he had a view on a subject. And he generally had a view on every subject .

I missed the heyday of the Irish Forum, having only joined in 2016. Was still some good posters at that stage, and some decent debate, but agree with Punchestown's above statement. No need for abuse. If you disagree fair enough, but do it with dignity. One of the really good posters I can remember was NeilD. Not sure if he still posts anymore, but always enjoyed his reasoned contributions.

SP returns and general price shows at Ballinrobe have been a bit suspect Calico last night a prime example
Sevilla at Evens to lift the cup tonight is my idea of a bet. I had them at 1.8 in my head. Admittedly, they might struggle to win it in 90 mins but it's after that they show their true worth.
