Or will they even race any horse that comes under their care?
They have certainly started off with a smart recruit.
Wonder what colours they choose.

In fairness it would have been no surprise to anyone concerned. Everyone involved were fully aware of the pedigrees.

Nothing from the racing media as usual.  Any big stories carried by non-racing papers / outlets.

Evening Herald had a story headlined "CAB targets gang laundering cash by Selling Horses".
Clearly they stepped in quickly to stop a horse being sold -  Any high profile horses being sold shortly come to mind.

Not a word from the racing media about the vet been caught in the champion trainers yard with all the illegal "goodies".Whats the point of these guys.Get as far up the gravy train as possible. One man who writes a blog could have a pop of it but im waiting. Its not the boxer either.

you are correct by purpose,
the local racing press are exposed as compromised by 2 of these mainstream stories. too many have close links, be it through ghost writing articles, acting as agents or advisors of sorts, or grovelling for titbits, and they would prefer to remain silent rather than rock the boat.

the two big stories relate to the biggest jump yards in the country, neither trainer is the focus of either case, the association could be uncomfortable.

the same hacks are capable of making big deals about non event issues such as phil smiths handicapping(they might be better advised to focus upon his Irish counterpart(again to close for comfort)).

I was delighted ballydoyle got the holly on Friday night at Dundalk, fully justified and if I was sitting on the appeal board, I would double or treble the sentences handed down on Friday. Not one of the racing press has come out and applauded the stipes? why?...

it is easier to pack your bags and book the hotel for Liverpool this week, rather than make a few difficult phonecalls and ask about the vet or the owner. then again, why would you annoy a high profile trainer when you might piggy back for a trip on a private plane with them?.

the episode with the guy under investigation from CAB, really involves the possibility that he is seeking to wash money through the vehicle of racing. in the case of this high profile horse, this I think is incidental rather than planned, though the horse has clearer drawn attention on the guy.

whilst now most racing, flat and jumps in Ireland is monopolised by billionaires, and has essentially driven out the smaller owner, I have noted that the underworld have been hovering at the fringes.

One team have been spending plenty on stores and placing them with point trainers, once the horses show ability and are placed to win, the owners can then go and sell for plenty and wash the money. If they fork out 500k of hot money on 10 stores, they only need 1 or 2 to deliver a point win, and they can collect 100-200k in clean money.......now if you think a racing corps member in Ireland would go about digging the facts on such a story, then you must believe pigs can fly.

A smashing write up Keen, not a word shall be spoken  against them it seems .
Report GANT007 April 4, 2017 7:51 PM BST
Keen leader, I hope you have all your ducks in a row with regard to the stores placed with point trainers.
Report mitch leary April 4, 2017 8:29 PM BST
Hi keen leader would I be right in thinking that's it's one point trainer in particular that you refer to in the last paragraph?
Report mrcombustible April 4, 2017 8:45 PM BST
How do you use 500k of hot money to buy stores? Are cash sales allowed?
Report GANT007 April 4, 2017 9:20 PM BST
Mitch Leary.......His answer will be interesting.
MrCombustible....Probably just a tall tale but private sales or through agents can still be cash. As we all know cash sales are very rare these days.

Will Mr mullingar be happy? Or be a ucnt like he was to Fenton?
Report keen leader April 4, 2017 9:57 PM BST
that last paragraph may have given a false impression.

to clarify 99.9% of those involving in pointing(and racing in general) are legit, frequently romantics chasing a dream with a passion. like the track scene, at the top end, you have the ultra wealthy like gigginstown and McManus involved, then other  regular long standing patrons/investors, the likes of dennison, nallen, connors to name but a few. Plus you also find career point trainers like the wexford set who have invested and borrowed to make a success of things.

I was not obviously referencing any of these trainers or owners.

one guy, with little to zero profile in the general racing world, has cropped up in the past 4-5 years owning horses, including young pointers, and bagged at least one prize sale. his original trainer(little known) has left the ranks and his name resurfaced last year in a different investigation. owner(and pals) have been involved with a couple of horses in the last 12 months with as it happens, different trainers, and these trainers should in fairness be deemed to be innocent. so to answer Mitch, I am not fingering any specific trainer.

John Gilligan is soon to lose his property portfolio. in simple terms, when cross examined in the courts, he could not put forward any defence for amassing his fortune which the court deemed legit. a lottery win, would have helped him.

the bloodstock sales part of the racing industry is one based on cash is king. if Gilligan or his ilk managed to receive payment for a horse sold through public auction, it is a result for their lifestyle and becomes a major stumbling block to CAB and similar organisations.

the underworld are forever trying to exploit businesses which may allow them legitimise their ill gotten gains. the racing industry is more important in Ireland than in any other EU country, with scores of people directly and indirectly dependent on it. in house, including bloodstock sales, there is plenty of wheeling and dealing, dog eat dog, acceptable in-house.

The CAB case at the weekend will be hush hush to the general public for now but will eventually pop up somewhere else (non-racing media) with negative publicity. The racing people now involved in this mess, I would deem to be innocent, though naïve, in that they may not have been aware of backgrounds etc. a lesson learned perhaps.

individuals from the world of vice, only operate by vice rules. that is why they must be ushered away from and out of a serious industry like horse racing. self policing within the racing world in Ireland has helped keep the state of the game at a very high level. in other jurisdictions, what can constitute a racing industry, can frequently be one funded by bandit money.

With some luck, in a positive light, the CAB investigation could work to the advantage of the racing industry and others from the underworld(trying to avoid drawing extra attention to themselves) may hopefully see it as a sign to depart the racing world.

"Forking out" 500k for a return of 20%-40% hardly strikes me as clever and I think this theory is unlikely.

Money laundering measures will clearly investigate the source of the 500k and many an asset has been seized on the basis, as you say, of NOT winning the lottery.

It may be spending cash to try to enjoy a certain amount of ill-gotten gains but there's certainly far better ways to do it without risking 100% of your cash if it's a play to legitimise dirty money.

I'd like to think in terms of "questioning" Brian O'Connor has been a thorn in the side of the Turf Club and HRI for years. Most racing journalists are embedded and are not in a position to risk losing their livelihoods for inflammatory pieces. Every article must be read with that simple fact in mind it's no different to any sectoral reporting be it finance, retail, pharma, tech or even food.
