Cilaos Emery looked a nice horse in the ist maiden hurdle. Jumped well and stayed on strongly from the last. Fair play to Ruby for doing it the hard way and making the pace for Sean Flanagan and the others.
Death Duty was very impressive in the second, and he looks another No More Heroes . Soft and heavy ground even look quite important and to my eye Invitation Only seemed to struggle on the surface. I wouldnt write him off just yet and the winner who is undoubtedly a high class horse may be vulnerable in the spring. Monalee ran with great credit also.
Automated got a very well judged ride from Brian Cooper, and waited until late to pounce on Scoir Mear, the pair a mile clear. It was a ride from someone who isnt low in confidence no matter what the general perception is.
Glenloe quite possibly only had to run to his rating of 118 to win the staying maiden hurdle in a dour struggle, and he needed every ounce of Geraghtys strength to force him over the line. The second ran well but doesnt look the most trustworthy and had a cruel hard race, so if allowed to run again within a month, is definitely one to be wary of.
Total Recall won the rated novice chase well from Crest in a race where not many ever got involved, and the connections of Goulane Chosen deserve everything they get for leaving much better jockeys in the weighing room and relying on Brian Hayes. It was bang in contention until Hayes worked his magic at the 4th last.
The 2m handicap chase ended in a dead heat but to me Mark Walsh threw away the race on Coolaghknock Glebe , as he seemed intent on winning by a small margin and just maybe its not a horse for those type of tactics. He certainly wasnt over urgent on his mount approaching the last and in my opinion he felt he was going to win snug and never kept the revs up.
Samcro made all in the last , although he only appeared to just last it out in the end. He does look a very smart type all the same.

Royal Caviar was a very easy winner in the first , jumping beautifully all the way and he was never in any danger. Good performance considering that Townend had to make the running for Mark Bolger and the lads.
Back Before Dawn bolted up in the 3m handicap chase, and the only surprise to me was how was it only 10/1. Somebody must have had a few bob on it because on all known form it should have been bigger. The way it won, you'd be hard pressed to say it wouldnt win again.
The Conker Club was held together well by Patrick Corbett to spring a surprise in the 2m 5f handicap chase. Not the most resolute of characters, it was ridden well by a guy i had never taken much notice of before.
Asthuria's fall at the third last rendered the mares hurdle a non event, and its hard to know what would have happened as the race hadnt really started. We will know later in the season but my opinion is that Asthuria is a very good mare and the winner isnt worth a sausage.
Corbett was seen to good effect on Charlie Stout in the handicap hurdle, another one who travels well and doesnt find much off the bridle. He rode it well and it may win another one of these poor handicaps this season.
Teachers Pet was always comfortable in the rated hurdle, and she seems to have improved quite alot. Its hard to see Dounikos ever again winning a race the way he ran there.
The bumper was won impressively by a mare of Liz Doyles, but i'd be very sceptical about what it beat. Minds Eye ran with its head in the air all the way round and the Mullins horse will never win a bumper of any description. Thurles bumpers are normally not great races and this one was no exception.

Gutted I didn't back Automated as I have done a few times. Didn't think he was that well fancied being 8's and left him.
The graded novice hurdle winner is indeed a No More Heroes clone. He's the kind of horse that could be running in the Lexus and Hennessey for 3 or 4 years if he can stay right. The Bartlett is an ugly old race often, hope they don't leave his career there.

You got to hand it to Kasper Gutman,he's been a consistently successful punter for years yet he keeps getting decent prices for himself.
Imagine a horse owned by Terry Ramsden,Timmy OToole or Seamus Carroll was making his debut he'd start at way under the odds and these were heavy losers.
Kasper has a bumper horse Cilaos Emery with Willie Mullins,they run him in a bumper at the Punchestown festival and manage to get 4/1 to their money.
He then runs him in a maiden hurdle in Navan.
Willie Mullins in his Racing Post article then throws in doubt about the ground ( good to yielding Punchestown )
The race looks a match between him and Joey Sasa but our man knows all about his stable but still he gets 2/1 for his money.
There is some contrast in what Willie Mullins said about Cilaos Emery and what he said about the marbh one Madurai.
Having Willie Mullins working for you is some help.

Cilaos Emery.He has schooled well and a lot will probaly depend on how he copes with the testing conditions.It was good to yielding when he won at punchestown.If he handles the ground then he has the ability to make his presence felt.
Really taken by Cilaos Emery. Looks a grand simple horse that will win plenty of races. Death Duty just looks a champion in waiting. It also make you wonder about how far Blow By Blow can go (whenever he finally comes out).

As a relatively fancy price backer of Roche’s horse I had no issues with the ride. He was fairly patient and I could see why as the horse was delivered at the right time having been dragged into the race by first two and was meek enough with his effort after getting a head in front. He was so well in and strongly fancied that it’s hard to make excuses for the horse. He will win again but yesterday was my first and only day with him.

He raced with relish and jumps extremely measured. Certainly looks to be a good pot in him and a horse that the market could underestimate given his previous rep.

Tell The King, go and have a look at the race again, Coolaghknock Glebe was never ever in front, and challenged in the wrong part of the track as well. Even the commentator remarked that he was being nursed into the race nearing the last. I dont care what anyone says, he was trying to win like they do regularly on horses like say Anibale Fly did in both his maiden hurdle and maiden chase.
Royal Caviar had a complete solo in a nothing race, he was allowed dictate at his leisure and the race was over very early. If he was a bit of a twicer over hurdles, i dont see why he will be any different over fences. He still looks like a horse that wont fancy it if the going gets tough, although his jumping will be a big asset in any race

It looked to me that he was just about in front shortly after the last, he was at least level in any event. I have no doubt he rode the horse to win snugly as he should have had plenty in hand based on his hurdles mark and was clearly ready for the race. My view is that the horse didn’t want it though. He should have been picking up away from the last. If you stop the race 100 yards from the line you would struggle to see him getting beat 3/4 of a length.
Plenty of horses that look tricky over hurdles improve for fences, it’s generally the scopier horses that enjoy their job more. It’s something that is also seen plenty in low level races in England where you have a bunch of yaks and the one that enjoys fences wins the race. He’s not necessarily a twice anyway if you look at all the horses that beat him the only poor run was probably behind Cliff House (and he didn’t run again after so may have come home with problem as he stopped badly after looking a winner). He had every chance to dog it against Haymount and pulled it out. Not saying royal caviar will be top class but can see him getting comfortably above his 137 hurdles mark.

You could well be right in that he didn't really want it on the run in, but that's exactly why I think the jockey threw away the race as he isn't wearing blinkers for nothing. To me he gave the horse a chance to opt out and it looks like he took it. To not keep the revs up on a horse wearing blinkers is criminal in my mind. His ride on the living beauty in Tramore was far too cocky also.
