So declared the Chicago Post in the 1850's.

At the same time, Boston was experiencing a staggering increase in crime, up to 400 percent for such crimes as aggravated assault

And as for New York;

* 55% of those arrested NYC in the 1850′s were Irish-born
* 35% of the prostitutes arrested in NYC in 1858 were Irish-born.
* 56% of all NYC Prison commitments in 1858 were Irish-born
* 74% of foreign-born NYC Prison commitments in 1858 were Irish-born
* 74% of persons convicted for drunk and disorderly conduct in the NYC Courts of Special Sessions, 1859, were Irish-born

Just a couple of years before that the capitalist libtards were exporting any produce out of the country and raping its natural resources.
Raising rents to unaffordable levels.
Giving relief provided you changed your religon.

Ye all know what then happened.

Would they(dem libtards) fall into the "bad" Anglo-Irish?

Not much compassion then, some but generally the two faced kind once it as per usual didn't interfer with their money making schemes.

Funnily enough, Tony, the Americans didn't want immigrants.

There were all the standard complaints; taking jobs, over crowding, pressure on services, crime etc.

The Irish in particular were unskilled, considered disruptive and of course were Catholics in a land of Protestant dominance.  The also segregated themselves initially.

Plus ca change.

Hardly obscure, hugely relevant....a striking historical parallel with the forum obsession with documenting Migrant/Refugee Crime.  Albeit one with the shoe on the other foot, so to speak.

The Refugee .....Lyrics by U2 (and my dear friend, Bono)

War, war
She's the refugee
I see your face
I see you staring back at me
War, war
She's the refugee
Her mama say one day she's gonna live in America

In the morning, she is waiting
Waiting for the ship to sail, sail away

War, war
Her papa go to war
He gonna fight
But he just don't know what for
War, war
Her papa go to war
Her mama say one day he's gonna come back from far away

Help me
How can you help me

In the evening she is waiting
Waiting for her man to come
And take her by her hand
And take her to this promised land

War, war
She's a pretty face
Born at the wrong time in the wrong place
War, war
She's a pretty face
Her mama say one days she's gonna live in America
Yeah, America

War, war
She's a refugee
She's coming man, she's come to keep you company
War, war
She's a refugee
Her mama say one day she's gonna live in America

Ozymandius had my reply removed,it wasn't offensive he just can't debate.

The crimes committed by the Irish were very minor, drunkeness and prostitution the main ones, now compare that with the crime wave in Europe.
Its Afghan gang rape and war booty, its Taharru**** grooming gangs in England, there is no comparison.

The Irish were more settler than migrant and they sure as hell integrated.

As usual the hapless one inadvertently makes our argument.
One thing we learn from immigration into America is if you don't defend your borders you lose your land.
The Sioux,Iroquois and Mohicans were unable to defend their land so they lost it just like Europe will lose its land if it doesn't defend its borders.

What people seem to be forgetting is in 1914 the Otterman Empire I.E.Muslims were attacking Europe en mass, surprisingly it was the Bulgarians who stopped them . Their way to gain entry and fulfill their promise to convert the World to Islam ,is by flooding Europe with refugees, and boy they are making some fist of it.

Well, seeing as you bring up history, Wonks, do you think the Mussies will never match the standards we set back in the day :

We do know the Irish arriving in the New World from the 1840's onwards would have been little more than savages thanks to the economic and social circumstances they were fleeing from. If that excuses the multiple lynchings of blacks during the draft riots of 1862(?) then so be it. I suspect the inherent racism went a tad deeper than "they'll take our jobs".

I admire Ozy for fighting the good fight here against the baying mob. He doesn't need any lessons from anyone as to how a particular view takes hold and its not too difficult to find extreme examples of appalling behaviour in any argument. If you think refugees should stay in Libya, Turkey, Jordan or Lebanon then direct your spleen at Saudi Arabia and Iran and not people who have humanity and compassion. Ireland's pathetic response to taking a few hundred is evidence enough that the "anti" view is very much in the vanguard here. We're great at pretending to care, se we are.

Two TV programmes educated me quite a bit this week: the first, inevitably, was the Irish Navy saving lives on the High Seas - a most soul destroying task for any individual - and we learned that only 37% of those landed in Italy are not sent back to whence they came.

A BBC programme on eight Muslims living together in the City of York was also very illuminating. The more extreme males who are utterly intolerant, misogynistic and boorish offer a good example of why it should be insisted that "if you want to live here, you live by our rules". No doubt the various subjects well well-chosen and the people with whom one would be horrified are easily matched by our own levels of intolerance today. It made for very unsettling viewing. My summing up would be that so-called religion is an absolute curse and gives all scoundrels a refuge. I know the Irish are still fantasising about water being turned into wine 2000 years ago while the Sunni's and Shia's are still arguing about a death 1500 years ago.

Royal Academy admires Ozymandius yet with every post he shows his shallowness and lack of rational thought.

Its now formulaic,it starts with something he has half read,it continues with some attempt at an argument,it then descends into vulgarity and personal abuse,it ends with a photograph.
His lack of historical knowledge is startling, his inability to follow argument even more so.

Royal Academy has a rational viewpoint but he has contempt for differing views.
To him the holders of views he doesn't agree with dont ring true or are a baying mob.
The only " baying mob " I see are the liberal thought police who shout differing opinions down, who have tried to make certain viewpoints are criminal, the Geert Wilders trial a prime example.

Royal Academy says he was educated by watching The Crossing and talked about saving lives.
I have to disagree with him here, they are not saving lives, they are costing lives.
They are doing the bidding of the smugglers to such an extent that the smugglers are sending them out on boats that are so dangerous they can barely last twenty miles.
How many of these boats have sunk before they got help ?
To me the Irish Navy is involved in a criminal conspiracy with the smugglers and history won't fawn over them like the Irish media.

The figure of 37% you cite seems to follow a double negative but is definitely untrue.
The Italians are broke and must look aghast at the alliance between the Irish Navy and the smugglers dumping thousands of migrants on them, they don't deport them they let them travel through Italy and head for Germany or Calais.

Ozy, there's a little thing in the Koran called Taqiyya , the principle of Islam that teaches Muslims to lie to Non-Muslims about their true beliefs. Its happening now on a grand scale all over Europe.

Ozy, in the 7th century the Arabs started to invade Christian lands inc Egypt Syria Spain and the Holy Land, the Crusaders help balance things out a little, meeting like with like .So I doubt the Muslims under their SAVAGE leader SALADIN had much compassion for the welfare of those poor Christians who happened to to be living in those areas .

I disagree with "baying mob" as well Royal Academy.

I abandoned going into the GPO in Oliver McPlunkett St yesterday,it was jointed to the rafters and despite 20 tills they were coming out the door. I thought the proportion without Celtic features was astounding and took up over half the queue. Maybe they were getting stamps or getting parcels sent back to their homelnd but doubt that.
Depressing trip really,i thought poverty was quietly on show, clothes were a giveaway,a couple of piles of blankets in shop doorways very early.
Huge pressures on housing in this country,no doubt the hospital corridors will be jammers with trollies coming up to Christmas yet again.
The whole thing is ludricous, the likes of the Samuel Beckett and the Le Niamh waiting a few miles outside Tripoli to ferry them over to Italy and onto ther final destination of Germany,Sweden etc. Why? Surely with an ounce of common sense they should be a centre in the middle east?
Of course your argument that the numbers are meagre would be correct at this point,in a decades time i doubt that, the social welfare system is too good.
You may well accuse me(being of the baying mob) of not being "charitable" i think it will come at too big a price for particulary the poorer Irish population.

Ozymandius when you quote someone especially a poet it should be his words.
Quoting someone from a novel doesn't necessarily reflect his views.

Its hardly surprising that the two lovers of the strange would be admirers of Mohammad and Saladin.

The key word that you appear to have missed is 'described'.

It won't surprise anyone to see you uncomfortable with the benevolent light that countless scholars have thrown upon The Chivalrous Saracen.
Report wildmanfromborneo December 17, 2016 12:24 PM GMT
Yes but that description is from a character in a novel.

Its a modern trend to pretend that the Saracens contributed anything to civilisation, they didnt.
We are told they invented some aspect of mathematics again absolutely false.
