its a fund raiser, tickets 2 euro, pick the first 3 numbers in irish lotto in any order, its the first 3 only not 3 from the 6/7 numbers drawn, jackpot goes up by 200 every week if not won, after a certain point they announce 15 x 200 euro winners to be drawn in raffle if jackpot not won, i think the odds of correcting the first 3 numbers are incredibly high anyway, so with jackpot rising 200 every week i'm guessing about 200 tickets sold each week, anyway this week they advise that 15 x 200 winners to be drawn if jackpot not won, amazingly 2 people correctly predict 39,27,3 will be the first 3 numbers drawn in the irish lotto on wednesday, i think the odds of one person winning is high but 2 people from arond 200 players ???? i think all the guys helping this cause have been had buy the organisers, anyone work outs the odds ?

If so, I think the odds of picking the first 3 numbers in Irish lotto in any order is... (45 x 44 x 43) / (3 x 2 x 1) = 14,190...so 1 in 14,190 |

So you have effectively bought 200 of the 14,190 possible permutations ...or 1.4%..... Jump in at any time Pa/Wonks/Tony/Borneo...to correct me and stop me looking foolish... |

1.4% represents approx 70/1.....so if you play every month, you would expect to hit once in 71 months or once in approx 6 years.
Now..as for the chances of two in one month..... |

If it is 45 numbers (i Have no idea) then Ozy is correct.
(45 x 44 x 43) / (3 x 2 x 1) = 14,190...so 1 in 14,190 The second part though I would have thought are independent events and therefore it is not possible to assign a probability. |

I never checked your calculation Ozy, should that not be 85,140? (45x43x43) or am I missing something.
Also I'm putting the second part badly. The probability is assignable (1 in 85,140). But the events (the two winners) are independent and the fact of their occurrence is simply random. |

I'd have pretended they were horses Oz. 14/1 chance to get first horse up,22/1 to get second and 43/1 to get the treble up, not exact but a quick approimation. |
