This really distasteful. why cant he just keep his mouth shut................
Olympic boxer Katie Taylor's father has hit out at the management and coaching of the defeated boxing team in Rio.
In an exclusive interview with the Irish Independent, Pete Taylor says his daughter looked "frail" and the team all "looked overtrained".
Mr Taylor was a member of Katie's coaching team when she won gold at London 2012. This week, he was abroad while watching his daughter's defeat to Finland's Mira Potkonen in her first bout in defence of her Olympic title.
But he is unwilling to talk about the changed circumstance of their relationship, preferring to keep family matters private.

Mr Taylor says watching Katie lose that contentious verdict to Potkonen on Monday was "a nightmare".
"I thought Katie looked frail compared to how she usually looks. But every one of them looked overtrained.
"Again, you could see the tactics were absolutely terrible. No matter what the scoring is, boxing is boxing. You hit them, they don't hit you. I mean tactics won Katie the Olympic final in London, that's absolutely certain. But you can't control what the judges are doing, so you've just got to fight your own fight," he says.
Mr Taylor is critical, too, of the fact that all three High Performance coaches, Zaur Antia, John Conlan and Eddie Bolger, travelled to Rio with the seven male boxers, given that Katie was not with them as the female tournament started a full week later.
"No one stayed behind with Katie to help with the preparation," he reveals.
"Would it have been that big a deal for one of the coaches to stay behind?"
Mr Taylor feels Katie won Monday's fight, just as it is his view that she also won the two fights earlier this year, which she lost to end a remarkable 11-year stretch as the world's finest female lightweight boxer.
Mr Taylor suggests the eight-strong team that went to Rio was hopelessly overtrained. "Every one of our boxers looked tired," Taylor told me this week. "They all looked overtrained. And everyone could see that the tactics were poor.
"You could see them being told to 'dominate, dominate, dominate'. But that's not what boxing is all about. It's simple, you go out and box. Hit your opponent more than you get hit. The best team we've ever sent away to the Olympics and it's been a shambles.
"But it (High Performance) has been falling apart since London. The timing of Billy Walsh going left it in a mess."

Thats his opinion BDJ and as someone who was in Katies corner most of her boxing life, plus the fact shes also his Daughter , I'd say hes well qualified to speak as he did...

I am not a big boxing fan / follower , but I would class myself as a supporter , particularly given the great track record our boxers have over the last number of years . Never bet on boxing either so I am not a pocket talker .
However the fact seems to be that none of our boxers performed to anything like their normal standard . That signifies something wrong somewhere in the preparation . Preparation also includes assessing the way the fights are being judged ( some prominently hooky decisions notwithstanding ) . Lets hope someone sorts it out before the next major championships . |

michael conlon performed to a very high standard so i dont know what ur talkin about..................."none of our boxers performed to anything like their normal standard"

Conlon apparently did perform to a decent standard , but not obviously to the standard he was rated at . Normally he could beat the Russian with one hand tied behind his back without going anywhere near losing a round . I did not see his fight , but apparently , according to good juges ( not the official ones ) he did not win the 3 rounds , that would be his normal standard .
Most of these guys were being touted as definite medal prospects , but the returning cupboard is bare . |

conlon destroyed him in 1st 2 rounds..........3rd was even.......easy win for conlon, but judges had diff ideas........imagine training 4 years for that. pros allowed in next time i believe.
im sure the irish coaching team who worked their socks off will be delighted with mr taylor sticking his beak in from afar. |

So are you saying nobody has the right to say their piece bdg , this man has been involved for over a decade , he has trained a Olympic champ for most of her boxing life , surely if anyone has the right its him...

workrider...........how does he know they were overtrained when he was not involved?............hes guessing............i dont know what u do for a living......but if someone who does not work in your firm started telling u what u r doing wrong without knowing the details, im pretty sure u wouldnt like it.
they got beat because they were not good enough and because of poor judges.........end of..............paddy barnes said himself he wasnt good enough........katie wasnt going to keep winning forever and conolly was robbed........they were the 3 fights i saw |

Been a coach for as long as he has would give him a huge insight , the fact that he knows when Katy is 100% also comes into it . The fact you don't like his imput is of no concern, point is ,if it was sour grapes I'd agree with you, but from were I standing ,I'd say he was genuinely upset FOR the team , but thats only my opinion and of course I could be way off...

Any coach / manager of teams / individuals in any sport can only be judged on results . Take Ferguson / Man U , he was the best in the world , arguably , and Man U went to extraordinary lengths to keep him onside ( which he still is in some capacity I believe ) . It has taken them 2 years plus , and 2 failed managers to find someone approaching him talent wise . That includes scouting and fitting the players into the jig saw .
Walsh was one of the best in the world , letting him go was close to a national disaster in boxing terms , those responsible should be given the black spot . You never throw out the baby with the bathwater though , there must be some good people in the current set up , but you would have to say Irish boxing has missed Walsh . I have seen situations in other sports where the effect of someone leaving was considered irrelevant because they were not considered to be vital ( Walsh was very relevant ) , but when performances deteriorated , it was largely because relationships and judgements changed because that person was no longer around . Their influence was grossly underestimated and under valued . And increasingly even individual sports like golf and boxing have fostered the "team " concept as a good model . Human nature a factor . |

Billy Walsh is probably the main reason. Katie Walsh's dad has nothing to do with it. Conlan was robbed the rest i don't know. But i remember listening to a good podcast a while back saying Billy Walsh is a massive loss and is came home to roost. The head of IOC is questioned by police while Billy Walsh is coaching USA. Sums up this corrupt CUNNT COUUNRTY.

The IABA CEO Fergal Carruth should get the boot. Time to clean out the top brass at some of these under performing sports, John Delaney on 430k and Basketball Ireland CEO on a 100k plus benefits package.

That is mental when you think about it, not being pedantic but i think Delaney on just shy of that now, i could be wrong though but way way too much. And the basketball CEO is on €100k? Simply put absolute madness, need to get these out.
