Started to notice this , having dined out a lot recently the number of Irish waiters or waitress that are serving is minuscule compared to a few years ago . On my recent travels across the Irish sea , I noticed that none of the people serving on the ferries were Irish ,  at the races now you have Non Nationals doing the car parks even at the Curragh .They  also seem to have the cleaning side of things wrapped up there. At a lot of other tracks seem to have them as well . Go into a garage in any part of Ireland now and you'd hardly see a native behind the counter . The Waste companies are full of them into the bargain. Seems as if we have just let this happen, I'm sure the bosses of these company are delighted with their cheap imports. No Irish need apply...

Is there not a rather high minimum wage in Ireland these days, Wonks?

Is this being circumvented in all these cases?   I doubt it.  Maybe there are other reasons why Irish employers are choosing to give jobs to non-nationals, I don't know?
Report GANT007 August 5, 2016 12:53 PM BST
Workrider.....You should change the title to "No Irish bothered to apply".

Of course you are correct re the minimum wage Ozy, a friend of mine arrived here a few years ago from Eastern Europe ,she is a doctor and was on about 200e a month back home, shes now running her own agency here and is making a fortune . Fact is Irish people are been pushed aside in the rush to bring in cheap labour . Anyone on the dole should be made work if they are able bodied and healthy. Every employers dream is low pay and big profits,  little if any of these profits reach the Irish taxpayer , either the money is kept by the family run business or the money exits the Country for the foreign share holders . The Government talk about new jobs etc ,fact is they DON'T employ many IRISH...
Report workrider August 5, 2016 1:19 PM BST
Gant, thats a little unfair tbh,I know many a Irish person who's tried to gain employment and been refused same, do you mean to say that no Irish person is willing to work these jobs ?. My brother worked on the old Leinster boat for years, the people who took over Irish Ferries got rid of the Irish , Stena have little or no Irish working for them . Topaz is Irish owned as far as I know , even down your neck of the woods I doubt you'll hear a Irish voice unless the garage is family owned . Of course there are Irish shysters ,but not them all!..Thousends leaving the Country because they cant FIND work. Yet with all their foreign IMPORTS prices are still shy high, so their reasoning of low pay meaning low prices are blown out of the water ,add Hotels to the list as well , yet we are one of the dearest Countries for the cost of rooms ,  most of the staff are foreign...

God almighty the Wonks you are absolute liar a doctor earning €200 a month in some country i call BS but feel free to try & prove me wrong !?

What Gant's says is spot on actually, i would go as far to say compared to the boom days the percentage up take of the Irish in service sector jobs has incrased but there would still be a resounding feeling among the Irish workers, imo, that they are too good for these type of jobs.
Report Vubiant August 5, 2016 1:59 PM BST
At least we have a sporting chance of getting an efficient and friendly service now that there are fewer surly, unmotivated, autochthonous Irish boors providing 'service' to customers who they frequently regard as a species of intrusive pest. Too many of these home-grown wastrels know nothing about the details of their job ,are sloppy and careless  and basically don't give a shít.
Report GANT007 August 5, 2016 2:13 PM BST
Not often I agree with Rocketfingers but on today's subject I do.
Local business have stayed loyal to foreign workers who helped them out during the Celtic Tiger years.

Wonks,

Your original post referred to Minimum Wage employees such as waitress and car park attendants.  The non-nationals doing these jobs are not pricing locals out of jobs, assuming proper contracts are being issued, afaik.

As regards your subsequent tangent of a non-national Doctor friend, are there not shortages in the Health Service at the present time that we need to populate with Non-Nationals?  As much as that might be unsavoury to some. (let's not name names)

Are you suggesting positive discrimination for Paddies in the job market (many here would no doubt be in favour; I feel a 'hatrid of your own, love of the strange' rant coming on #saveourturfandfish)....or would you say factors such as multi-linguistic ability, hunger/work ethic, presentation, education level, experience etc. etc. should be taken into account in the hiring process?

As in the best man for the job.  Or merely give it to the best Paddy for the job?  And if so, let's hope our hundreds of thousand of trail blazing Irish emigrants, prospering and gaining expertise all over the world,  do not suffer from such discrimination in their careers.

Report workrider August 5, 2016 3:33 PM BST
Ozy, of course we need Non Nationals to do certain jobs , doctors, computer, etc , but most of the jobs I highlighted and not exactly ones that you need a degree for now are they .Plenty of those jobs could and SHOULD be done by those on the dole , otherwise stop their payments .
Report Vubiant August 5, 2016 3:41 PM BST
As a general principle -no able bodied person should get money for nothing .
I go further . Museums should charge an admission price -however modest. I was shocked to find that at least some local county and city libraries don't charge to register or for late return fines. This is stupid and unnecessary. The message should go out that everything costs. Even if the charge was only 50c or a euro -people get the idea/principle  that if you want access to something valuable you should pay something for it.

Minster for Home Affairs, Justice & Education (who needs it?); Wonks

Minister for Foreign Affairs: Scouse ''Brexit' Tony

No I'm afraid you don't Oz, one of my points is simply this, there seems to be a over the top emphasis on employing Non Nationals in jobs that could be done by locals . The idea that NOBODY local seemingly want's them is the point . The fact so many of these jobs could be filled by Irish workers, yet people from not only Europe but Asia etc are finding work in these jobs is worrying , employers  seems to  fill em up with cheap labour .Are you seriously telling me that no IRISH person has applied for them , or on the other hand do you think  employers just might be thinking to themselves, hey theres plenty of cheap labour about lets use it. Welfare here is applicable to all , we even give them child benefit regardless of were the child is domiciled ,which begs the question is it really cheaper on the Irish taxpayer , or do employers enjoy the REAL benefits . I have a friend who works for a new company that has been selected by the Government to get the unemployed back to work , not before time either , they either take jobs or have their dole reduced, a new initiative it seems . Hopefully this is the start of something , the other side of this is most of them don't have degrees and manual jobs is the best they can hope for ,but we KNOW who already have these jobs don't we!

Ha Charles Byrnes could be the man for that post, there's a touch of the Haughey about him.
You have the scobes that are simply unemployable,i wouldn't underestimate that number, the other end of the spectrum is they are simply too educated,i'd have a gut feeling the middle ground is quite few.
Stunned at the price of a hotel room(Cork anyway) you get it a bit cheaper if you book well in advance but you are looking at a oner a night generally(no breakfast or parking in a lot of cases.) I presume there is 23% vat on that?, they have gone up big time in the last two years or so in any case.
While tourist numbers have been climbing they are going to lose the British ones now,why be flaed for 700e on a hotel bed alone for a week when you could go get a bit of sun and a so much cheaper cost of living for probably less?

ya dont get the monday morning hangover phone call
Report workrider August 6, 2016 9:48 AM BST
Calling Card I understand perfectly were you're coming from ,thats the wonderful thing about employing immigrants, they WILL turn up for work on Mondays , well most of them anyway, been in a foreign Country you don't have a option now do you ,its either work or nothing. Irishmen and Women are in the same boat when they emigrate, and are well known Worldwide as hard grafters. The myth that natives are not interested in such jobs fails to move me I'm afraid.Plenty of young people here in Dublin would take them in the blink of an eye.Emplorers know this ,hense the minimum wage that often goes with them .I can assure you that come Monday morning in places like Poland ,Moldova etc ,the phone will be ringing with that dreaded hangover call.I could quote some crime figures that show not all Non Nationals display the honesty you seem admire , but thats not the point up for debate .point is , these are jobs that should be shared equally among the population , % wise shows different, and thats the whole point of this .Nobody is saying they shouldn't be working here, in fact I say fair play to them, but how come so many for those unskilled jobs.

Most of these foreign nationals are very well educated but their qualifications are not recognised here. Most are here to work hard, make money and up skill if they can.
I agree with you Workrider about the Irish abroad, Paddy wouldn't work in a local Topaz but he would work in one in Sydney where the neighbours can't see him.

There will always be a certain amount of your population who can't work, but why import people who won't work.

One certainty is CALLING CARD employs Eastern European women, another certainty is they will not be religion of peace members.

Timberman is dead right about benefits given to some families,a Galway Judge refused free legal aid temporarily when he discovered the gentleman in front of him was getting 900 a week in benefits.

Lots of Polish women working in my local towns and they are delightful but when they accrue enough money they will go home.
The covered up ones who are cosseted from the start will never go home.
The ones who come to commit ATM crime won't go home.

The fraud in this sector is immense, children are claimed for at the double and when those  polygamous gentlemen discover how easy it is to get multiple houses and benefits it will magnify.
Report wildmanfromborneo August 6, 2016 3:06 PM BST
CALLING CARD has responded on the Betting Collapse thread.

Part of his response was he didn't understand my point about religion, hard to credit but he states he employs 50% Irish the rest Indian and Filipino,no sign of the group who don't allow their women work and have discovered a great welfare system which pays all the non workers.

A man brought up in Ireland/England will rightly desire or expect to purchase a property in his native land as a home in which to bring up his family. He wont expect to sleep 3/5 to a room and build his own house in some far flung lesser cost based economy and hid earnings will circulate his own economy.

Some post on here are very blinkered. Some things in life that come for free can have huge returns and benefit.Off course you may be privileged biased and fearing a loss of perceived control.
Report peckerdunne August 7, 2016 6:16 PM BST
As for tourism.I know Americans and others come to these shores expecting to bask in the atmosphere of real Ireland.Being serviced constantly and widely by non nationals is a big loss in revenue.

This minimum wage argument is tripe also.In England the working wage is much lower but the service industries are dominated by non nationals. Strangely also or not is the fact that housing and accommodation is generally much more expensive.Go figure.

Transient markets, capitalism, versus civil rights, culture,oh, and protectionism.Cop on some of ye in ivory towers.
