has not paid income or capital gains tax here for the last 20 years. ah but sure dosnt he donate a few jerseys to local clubs the odd time.

hes only playing by the rules that are there.. would you prefer he pays millions in taxes that go to pay the german banks who gambled on the irish economy but were bailed out by our spinless government? fair play to him i say..and by the way he does a lot more than buy a few jerseys for local teams..a lot of what he does to help people goes unreported..but then we irish prefer bad news storys than good news ones..

Most of us don#t have the luxury of being able to "live abroad" , particularly for tax reasons , would that we could !
Every citizen has a duty to pay the correct amount of tax , that includes not overpaying ( not just underpaying ) . The amount JP spends in Ireland ( and UK ) on horses , their upkeep , their trainers and jockeys and stable staff , probably runs into figures we are unfamiliar with . I am sure that in common with most other rich people born in these isles he has located himself elsewhere to take advantage of another country's tax rules , and pays appropriately according to their rules . That's the way of the world , maybe unfortunately , but a clever government would devise ways to "repatriate" such individuals on an equivalent basis . JP would be the first home in such a situation . Saves counting days . And a state which mortgaged its citizens future for years in the banking "crisis" has shown its hand enough to not warrant any sympathy for tax avoidance by individuals . Jerseys are two a penny in JP's world , there is a lot you don't hear about ( and could not guess at figure wise) . |

suppose no cocidence that the tax laws are written by parties hes closly connected to. id prefer the tax collected was used to pay for hospital and the likes. not bondholders. which reminds me. isnt mcmanus one of those bondholders who advised the goverment to bail them out.

The only time JP got involved with the government was when Bertie advised him he was devaluing the Punt,its unknown how much JP made on this gem of information,unknown how much Bertie got in return. |

I wouldn't be as certain that JP's only interaction with our beloved leaders was with Bertie. There are rumours that he gave 'advice' of some sort to Cowen and co. during our national crisis. Certainly those rumors were strong and persistent enough to for the question to be put to Kevin Cardiff during the banking inquiry.
The subsequently well rewarded Kevin's answer was that he had 'no recollection of that'. |

ireland is one of europes lowest tax havens? i personally disagree with it as lots of top companys run thier business thru ireland ..rather than pay the correct tax in the countrys that the money was earnt in?..but thses are the rules of the world and the eu..im looking forward to my country voting out..and then voting in a left wing goverment in 2020 to make the rich and businesses pay the tax they should..(we can all dream)

JP's business is based in switzerland (currency trading)........so why should he pay irish tax?...........he is just doing what the rest of us would do.......i dont like the way everyone fawns over JP....hes no angel but on the tax issue he is doing nothing wrong

How is he not liable for the taxation on his US winnings?
He's claiming that the double taxation treaty between the US and Ireland exempts him from tax on these winnings and that would be correct if he was tax domiciled in Ireland. Paying a token €200,000 levy in 2012 should not and does not allow him or anyone else to avail of the same treatment as those domiciled in Ireland. It's actually contemptuous and absurd to be even challenging it. He can't have it both ways he's either resident here and pays his tax or he's not. |
