The only thing she has done wrong is that she isn't her father. Bit sad for Bryan Cooper as well. Wonder had they lost senior staff or something. Be interesting to hear what horses they feel underperformed.

Surprised at the Martin decision. Massive blow for him. Is the Vurragh move not working out? Thought he trained Dedigout beautifully since he returned hurdling. Should never have allowed Bog Warrior run at Cheltenham, though. Surely an O'Leary call.

The Gigginstown approach seems eminenly fair. Rarely see it spellt out in such terms. The quotes are pretty chilling!

Has anyone ever trained for them again after losing patronage. Id have said Martin will again.

Would Mouse Morris even want more horse, with his MO? Bad for Racing if he is going to furgher increase Mullin's already stacked roster.

Surprised he has never asked Weld to take the odd jumper or maybe Joseph

Interesting development seems a tad strange what was realistically expected of these horses though they are hardly the classiest type of horses? Be it ok there is a high level of competition around Ireland with the Mullins domination will Be interesting how they do at another stable and with who more so. In all honesty at the moment with the money they have at there disposal I can see why they would want to send more to Mullins who wouldn't?  Not great for Irish racing but at the end of the day there is money at stake more importantly they want to win big races. Which as it is.. Seems to be more likely with Mullins.. Apples Jade Don Poli etc.. At the very least competing anyway.

I imagine the Hughes situation is more to do with where they see the yard going rather than just last season. As is generally the case, the loss of someone like Dessie will be felt more in the next five years than immediately after their passing. Sandra inherited vast majority of the owners / horses in the yard up to now. Big difference when it comes to restocking. No surprise if the operation winds down very quickly as was the story previously.

I am sure the constant stories of Martin having to pack it in along with the poor results mean’t Gigginstown didn’t have to think too hard about pulling the plug. It’s a pity because, regardless of the punting aspect, he is a serious trainer of horses.

I'm guessing that would be down to the money side of things? Id agree its hard to have sympathy for somebody like Martin IMO especially as there are a few honest trainers about trying to get by. As you say I can't deny the guy can place/train a horse not forgetting landing a puntCool

Michael O'Leary was not very hopeful/optimistic re Don Cossack, on Newstalk Breakfast radio this morning with Ivan Yates & Chris Donoghue saying... "tendon injury usually takes 2 years to fully recover - he's 9yo - so unlikely to come back as good as he was at 11yo".

Great wide-ranging interview, well worth a listen with some funny comments..... http://www.newstalk.com/podcasts/Breakfast/Highlights_from_Newstalk_Breakfast/142561/Luas_drivers_are_a_bunch_of_headbangers_says_OLeary

"I would have sacked the whole lot of them" - Michael O'Leary on striking Luas workers.
"The flight to China is very sexy - 400 passengers 3 times a week, mickey mouse - we deliver more passengers from Bournemouth !"
"Aer Lingus only does 10m passengers a year - we do that in a month !" (Ryanair carry 116 M/year).
and right near the end - "I don't have anything against cyclist...quite like cyclists - I just wouldn't eat a whole one" Laugh

its a ruthless thing to do..they have no respect imo..dessie done well for them ..they at least could of give the girl another year? i understand its the buisness but were talking about the biggest operation in racing ffs..i can only hope she finds a couple of good owners and horses and shows she can do the job.

Dessie did not do brilliant for them and none of the promising horses developed into the very top class. This includes Siegemaster, Magnanimty and the likes of Tofino Bay and the enigmatic Bright New Dawn, who was disappointing based on his promising form as a young horse. Lieutenant Colonel is a grade 1 winner but again he is not proving to be top class and Thunder and Roses has done little really other than winning an Irish National. Granted winning an Irish National is a big thing but it is not really a sign of a brilliant trainer by any means.

The prospect was that there were no top class horses being developed again this year. I would not be surprised if this decision had been contemplated for some time including when Dessie was still training, but the timing of that would have been dreadful and there has been a sufficient gap now that they felt it was time to act.

Dessie enjoyed some big success and may not have got some of the better ones, but his record for them was average and Sandra was showing no sign that she could deliver in the way Elliott and Mullins can, so the decision itelf, leaving the emotiveness out of it, is far from wrong.

All Hell Let Loose made an impressive start for Henry de Bromhead when running out a cosy winner of the beginners chase at Kilbeggan.
The 4/5 favourite was to the fore throughout in the 2m3f contest and jumped into a clear lead three from home.

Davy Russell eased clear before the last on the Gigginstown gelding as he went on to record an cosy eight-length success over 20/1shot This Time.
“He jumped great. He only joined us recently, (from Sandra) and I’m delighted to get a good horse like that,” said de Bromhead.
“He’d already run over fences so there was not a lot for us to do.
“We’ll see what the owners want to do but I’d imagine he’ll keep going as he’s a good ground horse. He could go to Galway.”

Max,

quite well balanced individual - chip on both shoulders ?

"Subsidies for new routes are perfectly legal – Dublin airport offers them all the time – but according to EU guidelines they should be for a limited period (usually three to five years) and should decline in value year on year. The intention is that they end when a route is starting to become profitable".

Most have sympathy with Sandra Hughes.

Tony Martin sealed his fate when he had a gamble on a horse with one of theirs looking on,was asked to explain, stated getting the horse to a decent handicap mark, was quickly told that's not the way we do business.

About time they're giving De Bromhead a few of theirs. Their 3 major trainers should be Mullins,Elliot,De Bromhead.
They won't go far wrong with that.

I don't think Henry is the man for them , he tends to undercook his horses imo ,and thatsnot their way...

I would have said Henry was the other way.  He had them ready to rock first time!  Might be changing slightly over the last season but he doesnt get massive improvement out of them as the season goes on by and large.

Martin must have a virus in the yard.  Most of the horses are running like drains or else must not have access to the 'good stuff' like the other top lads.

First ex-Martin one runs tomorrow, Beau Et Sublime 7.45 Clonmel for Elliott, think it has a good chance.
