I won't be celebrating.
I think the politicians basking in the celebrations have some cheek.
The men of 1916 died for Irish independence and this current lot gave it all away via the Lisbon Treaty.
We are now a backwater with no power,our fisheries have been systematically pillaged.
Germany control the EU and have even more control over the Euro,which is effectively the Deutschmark.
We had a better deal under the British.

Does your better deal take into account the grinding poverty that most of the population lived in and limited voting rights.
Everything is of its time,don't forget there was grinding poverty in all those British industrial cities.
Women didnt have the vote in either country.
We did however have some influence,we had far more representation for a start.
Gladstone introduced those famous land acts because he needed the support of the Irish Parliamentary Party.
Isaac Butt,Joe Biggar and Parnell became famous parliamentarians and forced the Home a rule bills on Gladstone.
We have no influence at all in Europe,its run by Germany for Germany.
I would rather we were independent making our own decisions.
The hypocrisy of politicians lauding the sacrifices of the men of 1916 yet undoing their noble deeds in less than a hundred years is sickening.

I think Eddie Batt is a Waterford man,interesting that John Redmond was MP for that city.
In the Sinn Fein landslide of 1918 one of the few successes of the IPP was Captain Willie Redmond in Waterford.
If this was 1966 I would be celebrating our golden generation,if it was 1976 or 1986 or 1996 I would be doing similar but not now.

Wildman-at the time of the 1918 election Willie Redmond was dead having been killed fighting for an empire that went to war for the freedom of small nations.

Willie Redmond won the by election caused by the death of his father in early 1918.
He held the seat in the general election of that year.
He also went on to represent Waterford in the Dail,he did so til his death in 1932.
His widow Bridget won his seat in that year.

Ireland 1916 and Ireland 2016 represent completely different scenarios , so any comparisons are purely conjecture .
Irish politicians , south and north , have invariably "flown the flag" when it suited them , and the associated historical judgements keep changing in a changing world . Who would have envisaged the current British monarch being feted in Dublin some years ago , glad to see the healing process that was part of that .
Europe has become a mess , lots of factors involved . The Germans do dominate Europe , surprising given the problems engendered ( and tackled forcefully) by unification ) which was a huge task . I like the Germans , like their attitude to modern living , there is a sense of order in Germany which is missing in most other European countries . They are sensible , and given their turbulent history over the last 102 years their status could be considered surprising . Not a slave to all their utterings , but generally they have the right end of the stick .
As I have posted before , Ireland south has no firm agenda politically as proved by recent voting , there are too many narrow viewpoints , and no one has captured the imagination of the voters with policies which are for the general good of the country as against the narrower views most are espousing .

Can't agree there,those lunatics with their refugees welcome signs aren't sensible.

Still think the Germans are sensible , wildman , the refugee situation and the religion issues are complex , and I cant believe that too many Germans are not sleeping peacefully in their beds most night . Media love stories , if they have not got one they invent one , we witnessed that first hand for 30 years plus up here . You just had to sit in on some of the late night discussions taking place in some of our hotels among self appointed political apologists to see that . Most coming from people with no real stake in the country they were in .
